- Miss Universe 1984, the 33rd Miss Universe pageant, was held on July 9, 1984 at the James L. Knight Convention Center in Miami, Florida, United States. Yvonne Ryding of Sweden was crowned by Lorraine Downes of New Zealand. 81 contestants competed in this year.

For sweden don't underestimate sweden, sweden is a powerhouse during 50's to early 90's. We never know they can made a huge comeback, remember their country holds 3 miss universe title, it is already an achievement.

Wow, 35 years ago and 4 of the Top 5 were still strong countries in MU today: Venezuela, Colombia, Philippines and South Africa. PS: New Zealand was gorgeous!

Lorraine Downes looks like a living Barbie doll.. and even upto this day she looks gorgeous. Miss Sweden-Yvonne Riding deserved it. She was such a darling & gorgeous & she looked like an angel in that white gown.

This top 5 has always been powerhouses of beauty pageants. Venezuela, Colombia, South Africa, Philippines. This is Sweden’s 3rd crown. Sweden should return their interest in pageants because they were dominating pageants back in the day even before the other 4 above mentioned countries became powerhouses. Sweden has been left behind nowadays. It’s about time for them to make a comeback in the beauty pageant arena.

My aunt was so impressed with that gown of Miss Philippines. Was so impressed that about 2 weeks after this pageant, I was surprised when I visited her home I saw a big long beautiful curtain in her living room. I said “Wow, that must be an expensive curtain?”. But my aunt replied “No it was’nt, I bought it from Baclaran sidewalk vendor.

Venezuela as well as many South American countries were colonized countries where massive waves of Spaniards arrived, then in later centuries Europeans, Jews and Levantines from other countries arrived. A half Pinoy does not even represent 1% of the population of the Philippines. Whites in Venezuela make up almost half of the population, the same in other South American countries. Not to mention that many half European half Amerindian (mestizos) look like Arabs or Southern Europeans with dark hair and easily tanned skin.

The audience was not pleased when they announced Colombia as fourth runner-up!! Two Barbie dolls in this Top 5 (the third was Top 10 Germany): Sweden and Venezuela. One blonde Barbie, the other brunette. However, Miss Colombia is simply a flawless doll!
Of course there ws a lot of Colombians in Florida. She was very pretty though but she came last in the swimsuit competition.
