    • @andrewmccombs7347
      @andrewmccombs7347 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was just thinking something similar to that. I play some bass riffs that sound kinda like this-ish,. I use the D and G strings in higher registers a lot and kinda do like boxy patterns and move them around like chords. It sounds a lot easier than it is, but maybe it is really easy and I'm just stupid. I just like root-5th and root-4th-octave shapes... gives everything a groovy space robot kind of feel.
      I keep thinking I should get a baritone guitar and play it more percussive like I play on bass. I bet that will sound cool. The only proper amp for that would be an Ampeg V-4. So in like 2 years I'll be able to afford that setup Lol.
      I'll bet she's also a great aerospace engineer, botanist, brain surgeon, the world's first and last time traveler, member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and the President of the United States On The Moon.

    Yes! Thank you for this show! I'm one of the most enthusiasic advocates of Madison Cunningham anywhere. I've listened to and loved everything she's done since I first discovered her playing on Chris Thile's show three or four years ago, and I've recommended her to anyone who will listen ever since. The fact that so many really good, established musicians are so enthusiastic about her and are passing the word along is telling. She does a lot of covers (e.g. during the pandemic) and makes a terrific side musician (on Thile, for Andrew Bird).
    She's absolutely the best singer/songwriter/guitarist out there right now who isn't at least 70 years old, and her new record is fantastic.
    And by the way, please tell your buddy Rick Beato to do a show on her! I agree that this lady absolutely must be supported.

    Madison is by far my favorite new artist. She's an unbelievable guitarist and songwriter, with such a unique approach to both. When I saw her last year I asked her a few guitar questions. She uses flatwound 11s on the Jazzmaster in C standard. She also plays in Open D usually on her pink Harmony Rose, and she has an old Silvertone acoustic with a rubber bridge that she had in D standard at the time. Ultimately it's all in her hands of course, and her natural intuition for clever voicings and exciting atonality! Can't wait to see her again in October.

    Good call Rhett! Madison is very original and unique, yet there is definitely a comforting familiarity to her music... like music we've already known for years. The separation between her clear, high toned voice mixed into her deeply detuned guitar gives so much room for the music and groove of this song to breathe. Like Joni Mitchell during her Mingus album and jazz influences. I can also hear a bit of Sheryl Crow in her voice from her own debut album. That killer interplay between her bass-like guitar part with those drums are at times, reminiscent of a more laid back version of an Afro-Cuban rhythm. A little like Esperanza Spaulding mixed into a hint of Tony Allen's Afrobeat drumming with Fela Kuti. Check out the groove right after the intro. to his song "Jeun Ko Ku (Chop 'n Quench) from his 1973 album "Afrodisiac". (BTW... this whole album is great) The groove is in a similar sphere to Madison Cunningham's "Pin It Down".

    Yeah, Madison is incredible! I discovered her on NPR some years back and she's only improved since then. I can't stop listening to "Hospital" at the moment, but every tune is a perfect little (very complex) puzzle. Her voice and the tunes are so great that people might not notice her guitar skills, which are immense.
    And hey, check out the version of "Pin It Down" that has 88.5 in the title, with the all female band. Maybe the most perfect recording of three people playing a song I've ever heard. This one here is nice, but the 88.5 one is for the ages great.

    I just saw her tonight in Boulder. Super intimate show at a small venture. She was simply fantastic, as was her band. Flawless playing and singing. Pitch perfect all night. One of the best performances I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen many.
    You know, she’s only 25! Some people just have it. They’re not aiming to be someone else. They find their thing and take off from there. That’s her. She’s “uncopyable.” She discovered her groove and is masterfully evolving it.
    I can’t wait to hear what she does in the future. I’m confident it’ll be a brilliant, bright ride for that girl.

    Hmm...😏...Yeah... tricky and "weird" and complex from the perspective of the USA + UK blues-rock electric guitar ways of playing. She clearly has an Spanish guitar technique school, blended with Vosa Nova music gender... (same as me, hi Martin from Argentina by the way)
    An evidence of that is not only the finger picking arpegio plus the 2 or 3 or 4 string chords randomly played, but also the sincopa swing and rhythm which it's the corner stone of that Brazilian music gender.
    So... once that you've got that sort of "school foundations" of playing and singing, performing like that, get very fluid and natural.

Been following her since whenever Chris Thiele took over for Garrison Keilor on Prairie Home Companion / Live From Here!! Thiele used her as part of a number of rotating support singer/ musicians. I already knew about Madison Cunningham and liked her music before, but this video really peaked my interest in her again. I had no idea she sang and played at the same time, it's incredible. Her singing is great, but honestly it's the guitar that has drawn me to her music in the past, and now that I know it's all her, I'm going to listening to a lot more Madison Cunningham.
