  • How to Pack Artwork, Pictures, Glass and Mirrors for Moving or Shipping - Professional Packing Tips from Stumpf Moving and Storage
In this video Sean teaches you how to professionally pack and protect artwork, pictures, mirrors, and glass when moving. You will need four tools for this job. The tools include packing paper, packing tape, a tape dispenser, and a picture box. Links to all of those tools can be found listed in the discretion below. The first step to pack is to set up the box by use packing tape to hold the picture box together. Then add packing paper to the box, insert the item you want to pack, add packing paper around the item, and finally add a top layer of packing paper. One you have completed those steps close the box and taping it shut to keep it sealed. This was a very brief overview of the video, so please watch it for detailed instructions.

I'm here for it. I'm about to move and I'm going to pack as much as I can -- heck, I'm even going to move a few things myself, including some framed art, photos, etc. Luckily, we kept most of the picture boxes from our last move, so I just need to wrap each piece and get the boxes back together. Oh, do you recommend brown movers tape over clear packing tape? I feel like packing tape is a little stickier, but it also tears the heck out of the box when you try to peel it back off.

Hey! Thank you for watching. We recommend brown movers tape over clear. The brown tape seems to work better. Good luck with your move! I hope our videos have been helpful.

I’m actually packing my things now. To save money if you have a lot of pictures, I use larger size bubble wrap and never previously had any issues.

It is a common misconception that bubble wrap alone provides proper protection for artwork. No matter the size of bubble wrap, it alone does not provide proper protection against damage. Boxes are needed to provide puncture protection, and a solid structure to be loaded and stacked on inside of the moving truck.
Please note: An Individual who hires a moving company, and elects to pack themselves is responsible for properly packing their belongings.

When I was young, decades ago, I spent several years working for Bekins moving. We packed and moved everything. They had picture boxes that worked for 100 % or residential paintings and mirrors. The bottom part was a box that came flat but easily became a box with 4 sides. All you had to do was tape the two bottom corners. Otherwise the pre-made box was stapled together at the seam as it came flat. That was the inside. You stuffed it with paper and put the picture in it and stuffed paper all around it. The top part was the same but a little bigger so it slid over the bottom part. you stuffed it with paper. It was very fast and simple. This system you have is so complicated, it's ridiculous. 4 pieces of cardboard and you have to do all this work. What a waste of time and cardboard. It's so complex I can't believe. I took 2 pieces of your cardboard and made a bottom box closed on all sides, cutting the corners and scoring the plywood so it would bend easy to close the side. I did the same with another that slid over the top, except I didn't tape the last closing as it had to be a little bigger. Worked perfect and was faster and less plywood. Why has it become so complex?

Hello Steve! This is actually a very simple method that allows us to protect any size of painting or picture with just four box parts. They come pre-scored so they bend easily and are quickly assembled. The rest of the packing process is very similar to the style you described. Also, the "picture pack" shown here are the moving industry standard and have been for more than thirty years.

That's just it - 4 box parts. The one we used at Bekins was two box parts and they were wide enough to handle any picture I boxed (which was at least a 1-200+ of them) - either horizontally or vertically (about 3.5' if I recall). Since the box laid flat and was stapled together on long part all you had to do was rotate it and it was a box, then bend the two short end pieces to tape it and done. Make the one that goes over it also as fast. . I am currently boxing the type you have and I just altered them to be like the old ones I used - much faster and fewer boxes. I hate this system and it's too slow. I just can't find what I want without buying all this other stuff with it, which I bought one of, but went this other way. I'm not on a tight budget, I just can't stand how involved it is.@@StumpfMovingandStorage

The box system you used at Bekins sounds exactly similar to how we box mattresses and box springs. We have an inner and outer box. The inner goes on the box spring/mattress first and the outer slides over top.
As for the picture boxes in this video, if you do it enough you can get proficient and fast. I understand that you are on a budget, and that is why we make these videos. By teaching people how to pack themselves properly, they end up saving money in the long run.
Thanks for watching the video! 🙂

Can I ask what kind of brown tape that is or the supplier where you get it? I'm looking for something that works well with moving blankets and boxes.

Once you practice this a few times and begin doing it, you'll be able to pick up the pace. We take our time here to teach you step by step, how it is done. This is not a slow technique unless you are a slow packer.
