Todd Starts 2 of His 3 New Words In Just Hours

- Todd just received three new words: Bubbles, Comb, and Settle. Once I installed the buttons, I demonstrated and modeled each one for Todd. Within two hours, he started using them, first asking to be combed and then, about an hour later, asking for some bubbles.
Todd is a 7-year-old neutered male cat at the time of this video. Todd and his dad have been learning to communicate with each other since May of 2022 with the help of recordable buttons. We aim to let Todd express himself and tell me his wants and needs. Currently, Todd has 59 words on his soundboard. This channel is dedicated to Todd learning to “talk”. LOL! I think Todd wanted to test out both comb and brush to make sure he knew the difference because they're so similar, so he did one right after the other. 🙂 He's so smart!
He was absolutely testing that. This is a cat forming a hypothesis and testing the results. What a world.

I have an idea that a great many cats have similar intelligence, they just have had no way to express it.
Todd is very smart and he cares to communicate with the buttons. He trusts dad to take care of him and his siblings.

I knew Todd would use the comb and bubbles buttons right away. He already knew the words he just needed buttons for communication. He's such a smarty pants. 😺♥️

Todd loves new words. I think by teaching a cat to use words opens up a part of the brain that stimulates emotions they would ordinarily have. He is so caring unlike Glamour and Pauly.
He loves his Dad and wants things that are going to keep him involved. Cutie pie.
I'm not sure which Todd prefers; brush or comb but he loves his bubbles. Dad may need to buy in bulk 😹😻
I am pretty sure he was just trying to commit to memory the difference between the buttons. They both result in the same action but use different tools. Also the brush button previously resulted in a choice between which of the 2 he wanted so he used to think of the comb as a brush. By pressing both buttons he got to see the difference.
Todd had a big smile as you were brushing him. He looked SO happy. And both he and Glamour seemed to be enthralled with the bubbles. I think they had a lot of fun.

Its so cute how Todd has four legs that match perfectly. Just a sweety! I wonder what the other two think about how close you are to Todd. I'm sure its nothing you have done.......he just favors you period. I love watching him learn knew words. Have got to order the word buttons and try it for myself. I think it would be very helpful if I could communicate better with my Kip. He does some things that mean this or that some things not real clear to me yet. No kidding...Ive been learning Czech for forever and yesterday I found out library post free lessons...hundreds and they are amazing. Who would have guessed. I suck at that to.
What a blessing you have in Todd. He wants to please you by learning new words and he craves the interaction he has with you--both in learning and grooming. Both strengthen your bond. Unfortunately I have 2 cats of the Glamour and Paulie variety that don't want to be touched or groomed. But now I realize that it's not my fault--cats like Todd are rare as rockin' horse manure. He's a treasure. Were these 3 cats littermates? Thank you for sharing Todd with us.
No, the all came from the same shelter but years apart.
I have the same. Beauty like Glamour but does not let us touch.. All my life I had short haired Siamese and European who slept on me and loved petting and talking. But now I feel dejected.

@@MrsKastell perhaps it's important to check the cat out at the shelter or kennel and make sure that it likes to be groomed and touched before taking at home to make sure that it's compatible with you.

@@victoriasinger7963 What has worked wonders is acupuncture. My problem is we moved to a small town and the closest practitioner is an hour away. I've heard of the honey thing but have not tried it.

Todd is incredibly intelligent. He is making sure he knows the difference. He looked at the brush when the word was said, so he knows which object it is.
At 4:15 - Glamour looks up and lives up to her name. Also, "brush" is probably better on the tummy!

We purchased a comb just like yours in the hopes our Big Ben and Popcorn would enjoy being groomed a litter more. I am happy to say they both prefer it over the brush and it actually works much better than the brush. Just like Todd it makes them so shiny too.

I wonder if Todd's showing you he knows (understands the meaning) of the buttons. Not actually wanting it? Like we show we understand new ideas? He's much more into the brush than the comb? Though he pressed the button for comb first. He knows what he wants and when he wants for whatever reason the "soon" is pressed, maybe Paulie wasn't their for them?
Could be that he didn't really want it, but dad had no other way to model these new words. Maybe Todd pressed 'comb' just to try out his new word, but the only way to react to that is to give him a comb. Only that way Todd can practice his new words. If nothing happens when he presses the button, the word has no meaning and Todds practice is useless.

They seem to prefer watching the bubbles, rather than chasing and playing with them.
Thanks for that quick update. We all want to know how soon Todd masters new words and here we see in a few hours he has 2 down pat. Hoorah! I guess the Settle button will not be a frequent ask, but might be useful when he needs to rest or calm down after playing. maybe more for Dad to use to help Todd with moods.
Always like to see the other kitties. Paulie skedaddling away from the comb and Glamour being somewhat curious about the bubbles….
I think Todd will use settle to tell Dad it's time to quit working and go to bed.

Let me suggest you try using a plastic scalp shower brush instead. They have a handle on top and barbershops carry them. Also I found mine at the dollar store. My cats love it. It’s got a contoured bristle shape that fits best on the contours of a cat, especially the bones of their head.
He is SO clever but there is a channel on here which states that different coloured cats have different personalities. Tuxedos are allegedly the brains of the outfit!

I have a question: I noticed that quite often when Todd asks for something to be done soon or later, for example cuddles or a toy, you say „you can have it now“ and then also do / give it immediately. Isn‘t that confusing for him? 🤔 How does he know that he used the word soon / later right when he gets the requested thing now?
And that’s a real question no critique! You‘re obviously doing a great job! 😄
Often he knows I am working and is being polite by waiting. When I can I let him know he can have it now if he wants. You will also see many times he wants it later and he refuses it when I offer it now. He knows the meanings and I believe he understand You can have it now if you want as well.
