Thanks both - very timely that I just stumbled on this. Felled a small cherry yesterday to try carving some spatulas and spoons from. Noticed how easily the bark peeled off and how durable it felt. Having watched this I just nipped up the garden in the dark and stripped a bit of bark off a small cherry log and ten minutes later my little mora has a pretty little rustic sheath. Might just need to let it dry a bit before I leave my knife in it! Thank you for a cracking quick and easy project. I might have to think about getting a book or two and trying something harder :-)
Thats awesome to hear Ian, Cherry bark makes great sheaths and indeed there are some great books out there which go deeper into the project. Look up the one made by 'North House Folk School' in the US which is a fantastic book about Birch bark and its uses ~Peace~

Great video, glad to see you back Zed. I wanted to mention that there is a great deal of birch bark available in my neck of the woods(Canada) along the hydro lines. They cut down Birch trees after ice storms. With in a km walk, there might be 20-30 trees down. They are just going to rot. So it is a great way to get the bark, without any trouble.
Most definitely Canada and northern US is a prime area for collecting good quality bark hence theres such a rich history there of it being used for hundreds of years ~Peace~

For those people who think that the bark is to thin to work, the natives of Canada would split the bark in 2 so they would be able to use the bark for crafts and other things of the sort.
Hi Lisa, if the bark has been freshly harvested then I would wait a couple of weeks for it to dry, otherwise you're ok to put your knife in straight away. Either way consider using 'Camelia' oil on your blade to prevent it rusting when not in use ~Peace~

i wonder if using rawhide strips instead of birch bark strips would be any better. soaked in water the rawhide becomes soft and workable. cut into strips and using the same technique as paul did, weave it around the birch bark liner. after a few days rawhide will stiffen and never come undone. just sayin. great vid

I was born n'& bred in Lancashire but now live in Cambridgeshire. Local chippys don't do gravy, there's no hills. It's a struggle!

Hi John yes you use the knife edge to make the initial split and then gently pry apart with the fingers ~Peace~

How long should this bark dry before you put your knife into it? I would worry about rusting the blades if the bark wasn't dry.
