  • A week ago I introduced this pup to recall and sit training, he has taken to it really well so today a week later I am taking sit a step further to introduce stop. For the time being all retrieve training has been put aside.
    Hope you enjoy.

I love watching your work. My little one is coming on grand at 26weeks. However she is incapable of sitting her whole bottom down. She perches

Great video. Really helpful to see the process. Will be looking at your other videos for more. Wish there were more videos like yours showing the basics for starting to teach the various commands. 👍

Amazing. Learning so much. So helpful, I’ve had dogs for years but never a working cocker... we get one in 4 weeks. This is so informative. Thank you

Incredible progress. Just got and 8 week old puppy about a week ago so just going through the initial phases. From the last week video to this one is great to watch. I am a little perplexed about how much rest the puppy needs right now and how much time in crate vs out. She sometimes gets very very tired so I hope I am not doing too much.

Hi Lee, I am following your videos closely as I have a cocker pup that’s now 14 weeks. Your videos are my guide and I think I’m on target. Any lead advice would be great too.. Flash looks pretty small for 16 weeks, mine is much taller. Keep up the great work and keep the videos coming. 👍

      Hello Andy,
I generally don't lead train with spaniels till they 6months old. If they go on the lead they are allowed to pull when they are young.
Yes he's a lovely compact dog, which is how I like a cocker to be. Traditional they should be small compact dogs. When he's fully grown I'd be surprised if he's much over 11kg.
I'm pleased your finding the videos useful. Thank you for your compliments.

Hi Lee, Thanks for posting these videos, they are really useful, what do you recommend to use as a treat/reward when doing this early training?

surferdwb. Hello, I use a soft cheese as an edible treat, the reason for this is because it’s soft and easy for the dog to swallow. Other treats like biscuits, dried fish/meats often cause the dog to cough when they are physical active in an excitable state.
      Thank you for your compliments.

Found these videos a bit late...I have kept Jet on a long lead for fear of him running off..He is 7 months now ,is it too late to start with the whistle.

Hi Lee what do you use as a reward for him doing it right 😀

Hi brilliant videos do you use treats or toys to praise him for doing right when training or just affection. Thanks

Kevin Noack I use a combination of cheese, toys and affection. In this video the reward is a cheese treat.

Hello Lee. Brilliant videos, helped me out massively with my cocker.
I do have a question however if you can help me out. My pup is 13 weeks, I have introduced the recall and sit, which he has been doing brilliant. However after a week of training coming in on the whistle and sitting every time, he has started to run off a bit and does not return when I recall him. I'm not sure if he has become bored and I am doing to much with him or that he has learned the recall and sit and maybe it is time to train him on the stop?
Any advice you could give mate would be brilliant, thanks again.

Morgan Evans yes it sounds like you’ve been too predictable. Training needs to stay fun and as spontaneous as possible. It is good to have a methodical program but if the dog starts to anticipate what we ask for we lose the “obedience” aspect as the dog has starting to think ahead

Hi, I’ve just got an 8 week old working cocker puppy so am very keen to see how you train yours. One thing, could you show the age of the pup in the video titles you upload. It makes the videos easier to relate to if you know you’re own puppy is the same age as yours when the video was shot. Keep up the good work!

Hello Rico, Thank you for your kind comments. I've edited all the titles by including his age in weeks. All the best with your cocker pup, enjoy the journey.

Try standing somewhere fenced in but quite big area and get a friend or family member to sit and hold your dog while you walk away a bit and call the dog then when it comes praise it and then repeat letting friend/family calling back. Worked with my dogs with positive reinforcement through praise
