Gundog Training - Heelwork and Stop Whistle

- In this session on 1st September 2019 I took both Tia and Ivy our together. We worked on some heelwork and stop whistle exercises with both dogs tailoring the exercises to suit their level.
Equipment used:
- Flat collar and clip lead for heelwork
- Perfect fit harness (Tia)
- Dog copenhagen comfort walk air dog harness (Ivy)
- Biothane long line
- Clicker
- Treat bag

hi, first of all, many thanks for all the great video's that you are sharing. They have helped me a lot in training my (now 1 year old) springer spaniel with a positive and rewarding approach. Now, I was wondering about the way you deliver the treats: sometimes you feed them from your hand, and at other times you throw them on the grass. What do you do which one, and why? Thanks! I want to work on the stop whistle with my springer, but he has a hard time finding the food when I throw it? I've tried it with pattie which i think you used in another video. How old is ivy at this point?
In this video Ivy is 7 months old. How old is your dog? When they are young pups they often don’t have the visual capacity developed yet, so if he is very young then you might need to wait a little while or just practice the food eye coordination without the stop element first. Or you could also try doing it on a different surface like a patio if the grass is a struggle.

I have an English Cocker and we do agility. But, I've been talked into trying hunt tests, let her do what she's meant to do! Love your videos. Do you release from the sit? Does she sit until released, or do you just through the food (And that releases her)?
Sorry for the very delayed response but yes I release them from the sit. I personally use “get it” if I’ve thrown something for them so they should remain in the sit if I throw something even if I’ve not given a leave or wait cue.
Sometimes I will use “break” if I’m not releasing them on to anything, so when releasing the from position but wanting them to stay engaged with me, and O use “off you go” if I’m releasing them to go do their own thing. I hope that makes sense.😊

Hi, I have a 13 month springer who I have been training but have reach a sticking point with steadiness and am not sure how to move forward?? I also have a 3 year old wcs and tend always to train them together which is a nightmare. Your videos are great and I follow them. Have you any suggestions?

How old is Tia here? I got my Springer at 8 months and have clearly failed miserably with heel work as he pulls constantly.
Sorry for such a delayed reply, I have been off if TH-cam for a year or so and am just catching back up. Tia was 4 at the time I took this video. I hope you have been able to make some progress with your heel work since you posted this comment! 🤞
Are you giving them treats for rewards
Yes I tend to use food rewards; normally a mix of their kibble and JR pet pate. But I’ll also use play a lot as a form of reward.

Got my 18 month springer will retrieve fantastically in water but struggling to get him to retrieve in field very frustrating
Oh that’s really interesting! It would be hard to give any specific advise without seeing it in action but could be because the retrieve chain doesn’t have a strong enough foundation or hasn’t been fully generalised yet.
You could look at the clicker retrieve process to try and break each layer of the retrieve chain down and then focus on the specific aspects that you need to focus on. The process is explained on this website: totallygundogs.com/clicker-trained-retrieve/

Do you run in trials
No I don’t. My aims for my Cocker is that she will be a beating dog and hopefully take part in some working tests in the future. But I think I’d need a lot more experience and knowledge as a handler before we could get to trialling standards.
And my springer is just a pet who I do some bits with to keep her brain active and engaged.
Am at same stage. As you am going to run my springer in few tests. I know it doesn't hunt ground fast anuf but it's for the experience
Yes, I’m not sure I’m experienced enough to handle a trailing dog yet. But hoping I can continue to learn with Ivy and maybe a few dogs down the line I might be ready to take that leap. Good luck on your training journey!
Great videos watching them all now & going to use your training methods. Something I don’t understand is what is the purpose of the clicker?
