I have to say that your videos are a great reminder to all of us that we all have struggles. I recently saw your video that you did with your friend who couldn’t part with one single thing including the clothes she would never wear. Seeing that episode and frustration in your face made me sad. So many of us hold onto clutter, including myself. This year I had to break free from the clutter in my life. It not only affected a part of my marriage but it had a negative effect on me. I discovered some chains in my life I had to let go of and paper was one of them. I started in my art room. I went through everything! Drawers, bags, file cabinet, etc. and cleared out all the paper that was not needed. I collected so much trash. Took stuff out of boxes, found old notes and so much more. It lead me to clean out my craft supplies and donate all stuff I was not using to my local free art store in our community. Then it lead me to make another donation to my free art store. Seeing others people clutter and what they struggle with helps me to understand myself. Since my declutter journey, I have let go of clothes that don’t fit right, have detail in the wrong places that do not make me feel pretty, donated all my uncomfortable shoes and am still working towards more. Thank you for sharing these raw videos! I used to be a neat freak but have no idea, what caused me to change. I used to not be afraid to let go of stuff. Now, as I’m older it’s hard to let go. Recently, I was going through my cookie cutters. I have a lot for decorating cookies. I had to tell myself that my grandmother who passed last year would be okay with me letting go of some of her cookie cutters that were to hard to use. I kept the ones that were easy to use and from her. I even kept the couple she had from her younger years. I know we hold onto stuff because of memories. It’s okay, sometimes if we have to let go of some of the memories that take up clutter in our life and serve no purpose. Thank you Carla for inspiring us all to work through the struggles we all have!!! ❤️
I'm 66 and have been on a decluttering mission for 4 years now. This is a good way to look at everything... THE MORE, I get rid of NOW from tiny items to big un-USED items .... the LESS JUNK my children and grandchildren will have to go through when we're gone in to Glory. We have a big yard sale every year in Georgia called the Peaches to Beaches Yard Sale and for the last 4 years, I have gotten rid of so much stuff in my house and made some good money. I PROMISED to myself NOT TO BUY MORE JUNK WITH THE MONEY I'VE MADE. FOR 4 YEARS I'VE KEPT THAT PROMISE. I have actually gone into Walmart to experiment with myself and looked around and came out with absolutely nothing in my buggy.
yeah I actually laughed out loud when I thought she was done emptying out the top and then she pulled out a black item that never ended... an entire guitar case!
Wow! The Neverending closet! If you ladies can go through the dresser, she is getting rid of so much you might be able to completely get rid of one of those hanging things in the closet and she will be able to see her hanging clothes alot more!!
😅 likewise! I loved Jess, she’s quite a character! Also it’s fascinating for me to peek into lives of people that are so much different from mine. I live on the East Coast, married, with children and other things…yet we all go through similar everyday struggles!
I feel really ambivalent after watching this. I love the progress and friends helping each other 💗. But after being on my own decluttering path for years, i am now at a point where it hits me so hard that whatever i let go of, becomes someone else’s “problem”. So many donated clothes i fear still end up in landfill. We create so much trash. We buy so much trash. So many things are made so poorly. On purpose. And we are bombarded to buy more every minute of every day. It just makes me so sad. And i feel very guilty at the moment. The upside of that is that i am being way more mindful of what i “want” or “need” and i try to really look at what i already have. And if i buy something new: how is it made, by whom etc. And no more online shopping (which i hardly do, because i mostly thrift, but still) because it seems that most things we return just get burned😣 One more thing about the closet - i would take everything out to deep clean it and patch up the holes where the mice got in. As a health measure, can’t be good those mice poops and pee 🥴
Well said. If we consider where each item will have to go at the end of its life we will hopefully purchase more mindfully. Buying from Amazon and other online stores is cheap and easy but takes money away from your community. Buy from local independent businesses and choose more carefully. I prefer to spend $10 in a local cafe on great food where I meet friends than on yet another piece of clothing to house and look after.
That is why I love free piles outside - people walking by either take it or they don’t so you know what is directly trash. I have done this both in apartment living and properties with lawns. In some cities like Portland Oregon there are places where people actually have clothing racks outside in good weather. This is so helpful for people in need who can’t afford to thrift shop.
I think any stained or pilled item should be trashed, not donated. I go by the idea that if I wouldn’t give something to a friend, I don’t donate it. Throwing things out should make us feel bad enough that we stop buying so much stuff! I really feel bad for the donation centers that have to process so much garbage.
Amazing job letting go of so much stuff. I couldn’t help but finding myself silently rooting for her to to eventually realize that she will never wear all those shoes . I get it , I’m guilty of collecting too many too, but they really take up soo much space and once gone you don’t miss them as much as you love the space their absence creates! Keep up the great work ❤❤❤
Jess did a great job letting go of things and you are the best friend, Carla, to encourage and support her. Luna was so adorable ! Satisfying declutter!!!! ❤
Lowkey devastated that she isn't wearing the army green tent dress, lots of beads, and those pink 6" heels for Part 2. :) Love the energy with you 2, this was so fun.
Wow, she got rid of lots of stuff. Great job! When throwing out things like old bed linens, please remember to donate to animal shelters and rescue organizations. Even things they can't use for bedding can be torn up for rags to clean with, saving on paper towels. And old sheets and towels are great for when they have a dog or cat giving birth. Those can be used and tossed afterward if needed. To keep boots upright and shapely you can cut pool noodles to fit. Works great. I'm impressed at how much stuff came out of that closet. It kept going and going and going. lol I have closets that have a deep end also. Luckily they have shelves built into those dark ends. If you don't have shelves you can buy those cube storage things and make your own shleves.
To make sure the categories don't get mixed up, I'd be inclined to use contrasting colors of plastic bags for the donations/consignments versus the trash. Also, if someone's donating luggage, fill that with additional donations! LOTS of progress being made here!
I wonder if the closet could be made where on the right and left side you can put double hanging rods. It’s so deep on each side. The rod would go front to back not side to side. If closet is two feet deep that would be 8ft of hanging room. Double rods each side. Then when facing the back wall from the door put a tall shoe rack that mounts to the wall. It would make a mini walk in closet kinda. (Picture the closet as a rectangle and the rods are parallel to the short sides)
Hi Carla, Bea from Australia 🇦🇺 Great video 👍. Would love to see an update on your friend Becky's place, and see how she's settled into her new abode and if she's decluttered anymore since last time you were there 😊
Yes, and vacuuming the droppings is not enough. The shelf and everything that is being kept (and donated for that matter) needs to be cleaned and sanitized.
I would maybe put a small bookshelf facing at right angle to the entry of the closet in the deep end of the right side. You could use it as shelving without having to reach too far and it would not obstruct the wardrobe like opening drawers would. Love the video Carla, you both did an amazing job xxx
For tall boots, did you know you can cut foam pool noodles should you lose the store inserts? Just make sure they’re not too thick. ❤️from Australia 🇦🇺.
She did really well, a good starting point, sometimes starting is the hardest part. I cant stop thinking about a deep clean for the mice problem, especially if items were wet.
I don't think it was from the mice. I've had shoes that get tacky/oily like that. When it's got rubber in it. But def. I would want a deep clean from the droppings.
These two videos were so fun and relatable to watch. I think this will be life-changing for Jess, and she’s such a good sport! I wish I had a friend like you!
I can't understand that either, or keeping shoes in the same closet as clothes in general... Where I live, people are mostly storing their shoes in the hallway
Same. But I do see here on TH-cam that it’s a very popular place for shoes. I can’t get with even have shoes in the bedroom. They’re all by the door, but I know not everyone has a proper entry way. All homes should have foyers of some sort for shoes and coats.
You are so patient, you both did a great job! I would encourage her to sort through her dressers, underneath the bed and the coat closet (and possibly the pantry :/) to clear out additional items to help make room for some items in the clown bus closet (lol) to be relocated. Here are a few possible ideas to make the closet function better for her; add an additional horizontal clothing rod to allow for items to be hung at 2 levels. Measure the depth of the closet and add a tall and narrow bookshelf into the corner inside the closet, so that it’s facing the hanging clothes (IKEA has an app that may be useful to visualize). It will allow her to store bins on the shelves and maximize the vertical space more effectively so that she can see and access items that she stores (I.e. jeans, scarves, extra shoes, etc). Also, adding a structured hanging storage organizer on the inside of the closet door can help make some small items more easy to access. Last idea, possibly add a portable ceiling or wall light in that closet to make it less mysterious and easier to identify the items inside. Best of luck and look forward to seeing the next update!
That was an excavation declutter😊 But so satisfying for the effort you put in!!!! 🎉🎉🎉❤I once had a closet in an old house that was like a small hallway behind one skinny door!! Utterly useless. lol
The top shelf may benefit from some clear acrylic drawers for things (like those used for shoes). They stack & if there are critters in the future, the items will stay clean & critter free. For the right side that is harder to get to, I was wondering if handing a bar for add'l hanging storage (perpendicular to existing bar) would be more useful; or alternative installing shelves with storage bins that can be pulled out. Good luck!!!
You did really well. What an annoying closet. I’ve seen these in old houses. Usually there’s a rod on either side of the door. If the landlord is ok with it and she plans to be there for awhile longer she could reconfigure it. Two rods on the left, one on the right shelves above. And get a low profile or hanging shoe organizers against the back wall with shelf on the top where you can’t bonk your head. Don’t forget to look for the mouse entry and put out some traps. 😅 ☹️
I love that she was quick to make decisions. I do think one area that would clear up a lot of space is to find a new location for the hats. They take up a lot of real estate. Hopefully she'll be able to get to where she can fit all of her shoes either in the closet or in the free standing shoe area. Adorable, sweet little dog !
Admiring how Jess was able to let items go. May I suggest getting rid of the hanging organizers and replace with a lightweight dresser with fabric drawers for items she wears often? They sell tall ones on Amazon.
This was so satisfying to watch! I think that using the dark side of the closet for storage is a good idea, with a few possibilities to make it more user-friendly: - it doesn't have to store clothes - if there's a front coat closet that would be more useful for accessing clothing, use that for clothes and the dark side for coats, cleaning supplies, etc. - store a stepladder there (if she isn't already/if she doesn't need it elsewhere) - install a light there. There are a lot of battery-operated LED lights that would help make it feel less like a forebidding cave, or you could go with the old standby of fairy lights if there's an outlet nearby. ;) - Since she seemed to enjoy doing a seasonal changeover of clothes when living in NYC, maybe do that here. Even though clothing doesn't change all that much in LA with the seasons, it can be a time to do a general inventory of what you've got, see if you need to take anything to be mended/sold/donated/etc.
Fantastic work! Jess - now remember the one-in one-out rule to maintain: Something new comes in? Something old goes out. It's what keeps the space from exploding. A job well done!!
That‘s my favourite. I forgot I had it. Says a lot 😳 Yep, too much stuff!! But she did get rid of a lot… it would be nice if she only had a wardrobe that fits in her (accessible) space, so much is out of sight, out of mind. True proof of the 80/20 Pareto principle right there!
You and Jess have done an amazing job, and I think fours hours on the trot is enough for a session. I can’t believe the wardrobe can hold on so many things…is it Narnia through there 😂❤. I feel that Jess will let go of a lot more. It’s such a trust relationship to get the job dons safely ❤❤❤
Hi Carla. You're absolutely right about rewards and treats. Nobody should have to 'earn' a treat. But a lot of our problems as adults come from the way we were brought up, the mindset we were taught. Storage question: where to leave your shoes when you don't like racks ? Have a wonderful week with beautiful fall weather. Here it's raining and only 13 degrees (Celsius) / 55 degrees fahrenheit.
Im have 2 small open wardrobes from Ikea, 1 for clothes and 1 for boxes of shoes, smaller items. I keep trying to reduce my wardrobe to less than 50 items, but its a work in progress, as most normal closet/wardrobes are. I used to have 10 coats, now its down to about 5 all season.
carla you are the most patient person. This gives me so much anxiety. She is holding on to clothes and shoes that she will never wear..it shows the mental part of just holding on to crap.
You all did an amazing job. Impressed that you didn't give up during the hard part... I think we all tend to hang on to things "just in case"... I try to purge my closet every so often because I (too) am a thrifter. I love a good deal, but not everything really works out in real life. We have to be okay with things moving in and out of our lives if we love to shop.
Great job! It looks like she's gaining momentum and will soon be able to declutter other areas. I hope you both have a wonderful week. Happy Halloween! 🎃🎃🎃
I love your videos. They are genuine and real. The majority of other decluttering would show people wearing their Sunday dress for it. C'mon, of course I wear comfy things to do an uncomfortable task (hehe). Decluttering is a lot of mentally letting go. And that's much easier with a good friend like you are. I hope small Luna baby didn't get lost. Often I'd like to know what animals think when they're watching us.
Great progress! Excited to see more from Jess! Carla you have really great skin! I would love to know what kind of skin care you use and if you have some kind of routine? ❤
Love it and how you help her along with making decisions without pressure. So fun to learn from you as I am going through this process myself! Thank you!
FUN declutter, Ladies!! Great job! Love that Jess is realistic and really wanting a change! YAY Carla, for helping her get there!! Looking forward to the next one! ❤
Well done Jess! Well done Carla! That closet was SO challenging! So much inaccessible space that would drive me nuts. You did the best you could, with those tight spaces. Good on you, Jess, being willing to let go of so much stuff. I hope there'll be another video, featuring other storage spaces in your home ❤
Great video! I always enjoy the friends you help with decluttering. Of course, Sherry was very special! And you’re in a league all your own! Miss seeing Samson!
Thank you SO much for your channel and for sharing with us Carla. Though it's not for decluttering physical items; you've motivated me to start my own TH-cam channel, for different a type of decluttering, my emotions. I'm forever grateful...💐💐💐
Could be condensation from the AC. Mouse piss has an unmistakable smell. But for me the whole thing would have been put on pause to find out why the shoes are wet. That's not something you ever shrug your shoulder at in the house
@@Alex-dz2et Sometimes it doesnt smell overtly, its more a slight mustiness. I moved into a flat with mice. I blocked every tiny crack & hole , then got pest control in.
I love your decluttering series and commend the bravery of your friends and how they embrace change. Getting rid of stuff is not easy especially if we buy things to make us feel better. Good job ladies! Jess, im rooting for you❤
Wow, well done to you both! I was feeling so overwhelmed watching towards the end when it was all piled high so I can imagine how you were feeling. Great job.
Good job all round! That closet was like going on a mystery tour. What seems to be a common theme is the need for declutterers to get in tune with what their own style is, the best colour and fit, and regular decluttering. It's so important to organise hanged clothing by colours. Store footwear away from clothing, again organise by colour. Organising by colour makes it easier to put outfits together and you can see easier what fits with your overall closet and what needs to be discarded or needs a new home. It also helps to avoid/reduce wasteful purchases and increase more useful and complimentary buys.
Maybe she issue the wire hanging organizer vs those that droop. They have them on Amazon
Agreed ❤
That's awesome. It's always easier to let go of things when we feel like someone else will be excited to find it.

I'd just label some cardboard boxes with a marker. I dont have different colour bin bags instantly at hand & I'm not buying them just for a declutter.
I label bags with a marker.
I use clear recycling bags for donating and kitchen bags for trash.

Good job with the declutter. Make sure you address the mouse issue! They don’t just go away on their own. They found a cozy place to live!!

This is a great declutter session. I feel like Jess will be doing her entire house! Can’t wait to see more!
This was a great declutter I love it when they actually get rid of things..she did great and your so patient 🥰
This was so satisfying to watch! I think that using the dark side of the closet for storage is a good idea, with a few possibilities to make it more user-friendly:
- it doesn't have to store clothes - if there's a front coat closet that would be more useful for accessing clothing, use that for clothes and the dark side for coats, cleaning supplies, etc.
- store a stepladder there (if she isn't already/if she doesn't need it elsewhere)
- install a light there. There are a lot of battery-operated LED lights that would help make it feel less like a forebidding cave, or you could go with the old standby of fairy lights if there's an outlet nearby. ;)
- Since she seemed to enjoy doing a seasonal changeover of clothes when living in NYC, maybe do that here. Even though clothing doesn't change all that much in LA with the seasons, it can be a time to do a general inventory of what you've got, see if you need to take anything to be mended/sold/donated/etc.
Hi Carla, you & Jess did a great job. More to go! Loved that blouse you had on in segment - it’s perfect in all ways. ❤
It is looking so much better, great job…😊
Well done! She did amazingly! And what a treat, I thought we will have to wait a whole another week or so for the the part 2. 🥰
That paisley blouse looks amazing on you!
Amazing! She let go of so much!!
Fantastic work! Jess - now remember the one-in one-out rule to maintain: Something new comes in? Something old goes out. It's what keeps the space from exploding.
A job well done!!
That‘s my favourite. I forgot I had it.
Says a lot 😳
Yep, too much stuff!! But she did get rid of a lot… it would be nice if she only had a wardrobe that fits in her (accessible) space, so much is out of sight, out of mind. True proof of the 80/20 Pareto principle right there!
Great my house cleaning is done and pantry clean so now i can enjoy watching you girls work.
What a great friend you are Carla! That’s amazing progress!
Will there be another video? Would love to see her transform more. She needs more of your magic touch Carla.
Great declutter! Looking forward to part 2!!
WOO HOO, YOU TWO!!! 😍 AMAZING results, congrats!
Great job ladies! You've motivated me to do a quick pass through of my own "hanging items". Thanks for the inspiration!
Amazing job ladies. That closet just kept on going 😂. Such an odd way to build a closet 🤦🏾♀️. Thanks for letting us into your home Jess ❤
The never ending closet! Wow! Great job guys! 👏
What a great job 🎉So nice of you to help others Carla!Way to go!❤
You and Jess have done an amazing job, and I think fours hours on the trot is enough for a session. I can’t believe the wardrobe can hold on so many things…is it Narnia through there 😂❤. I feel that Jess will let go of a lot more. It’s such a trust relationship to get the job dons safely ❤❤❤
Jess did a great job! She should be pleased with what yall accomplished.
She was awesome about letting go and being realistic 👏🏻👍🏻💪🏼😍
This is a great video ladies. Well done!❤❤
Carla's face is like "Yeah I don't need the story... keep or toss?"
Really liked your music choices. Enjoy the rest with Jess
Good job ladies!
carla you are the most patient person. This gives me so much anxiety. She is holding on to clothes and shoes that she will never wear..it shows the mental part of just holding on to crap.
Awesome job, Jess!
Love for you two from Germany. ❤❤❤
Omg Jess, 8 bags. Is there a secret closet behind the closet to get so much stuff 😂 Have a great week. Mary, Joes wife 👏👍💪🙏💐🐶
Part 3 - yes!
Great that she was able to clear out so much
That was a lot of work! Great job to you and Jess, she must feel so much lighter.
Great progress! Excited to see more from Jess!
Carla you have really great skin! I would love to know what kind of skin care you use and if you have some kind of routine? ❤
Great decluttering video! ❤
What a cute dog ❤❤❤
Lots of work mentally and physically as well. It looks lovely now. Calm.
Carla, you are such a blessing to so many. You really have a gift for organizing and decluttering. May the Lord bless you and keep you always.
Jess is fun! See you soon xx
Excellent job ladies🌻
Love it and how you help her along with making decisions without pressure. So fun to learn from you as I am going through this process myself! Thank you!
Yay, you both did a great job here!
Great job ladies!!!
Great video! I always enjoy the friends you help with decluttering. Of course, Sherry was very special! And you’re in a league all your own! Miss seeing Samson!
Great job Jess🎉
I have a care bear onesie too. Mine is Share Bear
Thank you SO much for your channel and for sharing with us Carla.
Though it's not for decluttering physical items; you've motivated me to start my own TH-cam channel, for different a type of decluttering, my emotions.
I'm forever grateful...💐💐💐
I know vermin is not the client's fault at all - but why is she not making a plan to rid the closet of mice?
And disinfecting the shelves because those wet shoes are probably wet with mouse urine 😬
Is it a rental? Its the Landlords remit if so.
Could be condensation from the AC. Mouse piss has an unmistakable smell. But for me the whole thing would have been put on pause to find out why the shoes are wet. That's not something you ever shrug your shoulder at in the house
or a leak!
@@Alex-dz2et Sometimes it doesnt smell overtly, its more a slight mustiness. I moved into a flat with mice. I blocked every tiny crack & hole , then got pest control in.
Nicely done with the space she has to work with!
