    Fun fact:
    Nergi _does_ actually have a special power, which is his absurd regenerative abilities. This is likely so that he can get away with fighting walking natural distasters that will severely injure him at times without dying from injury. While this doesn't show in game (because it wouldn't be fun at all) it explains how Nerg is perfectly fine with taking huge hits in turf wars with other extremely powerful monsters.

    I like how the reckless Nergigante grows into the cunning Ruiner Nergigante. Regular Nergi would have exhausted itself chipping away at Shara Ishvalda’s rock armor. Combine that with Shara’s air blasts and spirit bombs, and a tired Nergi would likely get beaten.
    Ruiner Nergi just plays dead, lets hunters do all the hard work (and carting), puts all its strength into killing Shara, and roars its version of “I am the greatest”. This increased its chances of getting a meal rich in bio energy without endangering itself against an unfamiliar Elder Dragon and that’s impressive.

    • @thomasallen9974
      @thomasallen9974 4 ปีที่แล้ว +113

      Not just that, but I assume it did so because it already is QUITE familiar with the Ace of the Fifth and their strength. I believe its actually The Nergi we fight in the main story of base World, it just barely survived the fight. Its why it looks at us as the only rival it has, the one who can best it. So the 'rematch' before Shara Ishvalda is it squaring us up thinking its able to win now, but not foolish enough to assume assured victory. And when its clear it wont win against us, fakes death knowing we will fight Ishvalda ourselves with our Elder level power making an easy meal.
      Thus the MR99 Quest, To the Very Ends with You, makes it sound its the true final throw down with your adversary, that finally one of you dies. Its description even makes it sound as such, "I know you've been waiting for this, and I bet Nergigante has, too. You guys are basically joined at the hip. But it's time to end this. Go get 'em, Hunter!" That is not a descriptor for any random monster you hunt, no clearly that's the kinda history you have with only 1, just like Gore Magala.

    Yes, the part about Nergigante's Reproduction is confirmed by capcom.
    My videos include a fair bit of speculation but the section on Nergis procreation is based on "Dive to Monster Hunter", an artbook released in Japan BY CAPCOM that included, among many concept arts and sketches, information blurbs about some Monsters.
    This is where this truly bizarre info came from, right from the creators pen. The book is incredibly imteresting (for example describing the life cycle of the Zorah) so I highly recommend giving it a peek if you can get your hands on it!

    • @arthurbazanelli8191
      @arthurbazanelli8191 4 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      About that part of reproduction, it could be that the Bioenergy it absorbs slightly mutates the spikes, including creating bigger or smaller Nergigante. That could explaing why some are smaller than others.

    • @ultimatedragon356
      @ultimatedragon356 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The "reproduction through spikes" completely defies biology for a vertebrate organism like nergigante, especially since we know for fact that it's close relatives in the true elder dragons do lay eggs, so I would REALLY like to see the source for this. The only person I heard it came from was banned lagiacrus on Twitter, who got it from translating a concept art book. So if I could see the video or interview where it is stated explicitly by the developers, I'll concede.

    • @raptorqe4168
      @raptorqe4168 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      One thing I’d like to put in as input is that ruiner nerg isn’t an adaptation per se but actually an older stage of its life which is why it’s specified that they are older and more experienced. The purple spikes that harden are likely spikes that can actually carry viable offspring which are probably why they are even harder than normal. It’s whole quest for bioenergy can be compared to how mosquitos look for blood to produce eggs

      @Dumb-Comment 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      he looks like a dragon that you could find in War Hammer

  • @GunlessSnake
    @GunlessSnake 4 ปีที่แล้ว +93

    Another thing to add is that Nergigante's regenerative abilities and asexual reproduction require extremely high quantities of Bioenergy. It's a natural extension of their abilities, really. Nergigante has immense physical strength and regenerative capabilities, and this constant shedding of thorns would play well into propagating the species more efficiently. However, the cost is the requirement of tackling the strongest Monsters around to acquire and maintain the Bioenergy quality and quantity necessary.
    It's a natural balancing mechanism. Nergigante are some of the fiercest Elder Dragons around, being able to consistently prey on other Elder Dragons and the strongest Monsters. Their genetic design seems perfectly suited to this task, so their limit is intensive energy needs to reproduce and upkeep this power, thus keeping the population down and preventing them from overrunning the environments of the planet. In turn, their high potential power as a species keeps other Elder Dragons and Monsters in check.

  • @megal204
    @megal204 4 ปีที่แล้ว +315

    Asexual reproduction comes with another big flaw which is that the mutations an organism suffered from (adding, getting rid off or replacing an amino acid) will get inherited within the new being, tho the mutation can also play in the species favor sometimes which might be a theory (even if incomplete and really basic) as to why ruiner nergigante exists.
    Despite the showcase of haploïdism and diploïdism not being the most accurate, the rest of the video is flawless, they are genuinely the ones I love the most, keep up the good work mister ocean man

      heres a theory
      if nergy can have a fast population growth considering its reproductive methods what if the genes present in its decended are some what ulterred by the body itself before they get born yes its extreamly random but those that ave a good chance in survival are those that got the more succesful setts of alterred genes

    I think I have a good explanation for the evolution of Nergignte.
    Nerg began as a simple Brute Wyvern with Horns, Scales, Claws, Ect. It’s echological niche was probably preying on large, meaty monsters. However, this BetaNerg would find itself being pushed out of its natural habitat during Elder Crossings, a regular event where beings with a LOT of Bioenergy come to its home to die. This means that in regular intervals, BetaNergs would be essentially deprived of its only food source by the older, more powerful Elder Dragons. It would still survive as an ambush predator and scavenger, but it was still a force put apon it.
    Beta Nerg would be forced to become more of a Scavenger, it’s body adapting to be a bit smaller during this time, and probably beginning to adapt its tooth-like thorns as a method to keep itself and its scavenged meal safe from others who would try and take it. But since these spines were breakable, the BetaNerg probably adapted to having its skin damaged and moved, hence a healing factor on the outside of its body.
    However, the thing with the Elder Crossing is that Elder Dragons come to the New World TO DIE. And as BetaNerg was a scavenger now, it would definitely eat any Elder Dragon Corpses it found. The Bioenergy of dying Elder Dragons would then be absorbed by the dominant BetaNergs, the beings who survived the best, and that would get passed on to its offspring.
    As we know, Bioenergy is a strange and powerful phenomenon. So what happens when a monster species who is both a predator and a scavenger absorbs a lot of it throughout the generations? I’ll tell you; any unique characteristics it had get put into overdrive.
    It’s spines cover its entire body, it’s skin becomes even better at taking and healing from damage, it’s mind begins to grow and adapt, and it’s body begins to grow back to its original size, or perhaps bigger.
    This then creates what I like to call AlphaNerg, who isn’t quite an Elder Dragon yet. It’s echological niche is all about ambushing and killing, and/or eating the corpse of, Elder Dragons. AlphaNerg had a VERY good time in its new niche, essentially becoming an energy-sink for the New World, instead of it all going to Xenojiva. AlphaNerg were like leeches to the Elder Crossing, they fed off it, but they made sure to keep their host alive and functioning. It is at this point that the powerful self-healing properties of AlphaNerg and its increasingly lonely lifestyle that it created a final adaptation; it would generate a large bulge on its body, and would begin creating a genetic clone of itself. Exactly how this is possible is pretty hard to tell, but it’s the best I got. That massive amounts of Bioenergy, a solitary lifestyle, and its powerful healing ability, and maybe some final unknown factor, it began to reproduce Aesexualy.
    It is my idea that this is where the Nergigante we all know and love to hunt exists. During Elder Crossings, Nergs will go on the prowel, compelled to kill and eat as many Elder Dragons as possible to absorb as much Bioenergy as possible, while also physically eating.
    Then, during the off-season, Nergs will “roost” in an area, essentially being Apex Predators with NO real competition besides Bazelgeuse or Deviljho. It’s pool of available prey for strong Bioenergy is lowered, so it goes into a state of semi-hibernation. It takes all the Bioenergy it has taken and creates Genetic Clones, raising them in the off-season before leaving them to fend for themselves before the next Elder Crossing begins.
    I hope you enjoy my little theory. ^^’

      Cannibalism is exceedingly rare in nature. Most animals will never eat one of their own, so even though Nergigante is a Elder Dragon, it wouldn't necesarrily eat other Nergigante. And even for species that do make use of cannibalism, they will usually make an exception for a mate, or eat the partner after reproduction, like the black widow. Also remember that Elder Dragons aren't a real "race" in Monster Hunter. They're just the general term that the Hunter Association uses for anything that doesn't fit any other category. That's why "real" dragons like Fatalis or Nergigante belong to it, as well as a unicorn(Kirin) and a flying tentacle monster with human teeth and trees growing on it(Yama Tsukami). How would a Nergigante know what "we" consider Elder Dragon?

    • @brandonshmandon1799
      @brandonshmandon1799 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      EskChan19 Well elder dragons all share a common trait that being elder dragon blood and elder dragon bones. Much like how a lion typically hunt big prey animals like Zebra and Water Buffalo as opposed to eating anything that moves, Nergi is likely doing something similar. Either that or all elders have some sort or unique nutrient that Nergigante need to eat.

    Another amazing video, very interesting to learn that Nergigante reproduces asexually. Makes me wonder if its memories are at all carried over to future generations, which could explain Ruiner being so intelligent and seeming to recognise the Hunter. Really makes Nergigante feel like a true rival, not just another beast. Like us it constantly learns from its mistakes and comes back even stronger, time and time again.
    For your next vid it would be a nice contrast to do a species with significant differences between sexes, like Teostra and Lunastra or the Raths.

    Nergigante has always been very interesting to me: his very particular fighting style, similar to the one of a bear for trying to overpower its prey, and his regeneration abilities are incredible. Also I think I have an answer to why does he fight Elder dragons: regenerating things such as spikes at such an high speed(btw I think spikes and horns are extensions of its scales or viceversa because of how their attachment to the body looks like) and constantly would require an enormous amount of energy or bio-energy that he would never be able to get from weak or smaller prays(which is what is usually hunted in the real world because it requires less energy but Nergi always uses a lot of it anyway), plus if you consider that when he is excited(enraged) the growth of its spikes accelerates it is natural to think that hunting something with little energy would make him starve. However this is also a great risk: prolonging a hunt for too much time or failing one would probably lead to death because he would've spent all that energy for nothing and he would continue to use that amount for every other hunt leaving a "hunger unbalance" that could only get worse. It's like betting your own life every time you do something.

    Good video, but I don’t think it’s spikes would be made of enamel. Enamel is very solid and would take a large amount of energy to grow. Nergi would essentially be growing hundreds of bones out each time you break his spikes. He would also feel an immense amount of pain due to nerve endings in the spike (unless the spike is solid, which is even worse to do how heavy and how much energy it would take to grow, nergi would starve to death as we fight it). I’m pretty sure keratin, the material used to make nails, rhinoceros horns, and reptile scales.
