    The natural world of ours is filled to the brim with all sorts of wonders. And it is these wonders that inspire us to create equally wonderous beasts and creatures in the fictional worlds we weave.
    The Monster Hunter Series is particularly great at this. So, if you would, join me, as we explore just one of it's fascinating inhabitants - The Deviljho!

    I love how the guild treats instances of deviljho. "Well we need to cull their numbers, otherwise it'll just eat everything, but we cant hunt them TOO much because the dumb shits cannibalize their offspring" it's a delicate balance haha.
    Also fun fact, they have indeterminate growth as seen in tri's event quest where you face a massive deviljho that was let to grow to insane proportions. Usually not an issue because they starve themselves after exhausting an environment. So it's a rare occurrence hence why it was a timed event.
    I think it nests in arctic regions. In tri there was a secret area that was only accessible when a deviljho was limping and would crash through a wall. It makes sense because of its high metabolism and heat generated.
    Awesome video! I love nerding out about monster Hunter.

    Putting some thought into, if two Deviljho meet and they do indeed have a non-aggression pheromone, this is likely present because of the caloric cost of two Deviljho duking it out. It's a loss loss for both, as it'd take a lot of energy to succeed, and the reward is an equally drained Deviljho to feast upon, which already burns most of its calories by existing. The pheromone is a fail safe for the entire species.

    • @WakkaMadeInYevon
      @WakkaMadeInYevon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      It could be that, after living so long, and so violently, the Deviljho's hunger completely eclipses it's ability to sate it. The natural end to a Deviljho's life isn't old age, it's an explosive self-destruction that tears everything down with it.

  • @gamebrainjagras4193
    @gamebrainjagras4193 4 ปีที่แล้ว +172

    I love how its blood turns black. IMO It’s likely that before Shrade fell, Deviljho were pack hunters preying on Elder Dragons. But then Dragons were uncommon forcing the Deviljhos to be nomadic to sustain themselves. And the Pickle we know today is the result of that behavior. Which would explain why Jhos don’t usually kill on sight other Jhos.

    You know i wonder how deviljho's act as parents. My theory is that its similar to Alligator and Crocodiles where once they make their nest the mother will defend it furiously probably for months even to the point of hunger and once the time is right she will leave before going savage.

      Actually I read on the wiki that when two deviljhos of opposite gender meet, they mate. The Male will leave immediately as to not hunt its sudden mate. The impregnated female will then lay the egg of her offspring and guard until it hatches. Once hatched it will guard the newborn deviljho but only for a small amount of time before leaving it behind so that it does not eat its offspring. This mating ritual makes it somewhat difficult for deviljhos to fully mature as it must fight and exist for itself while still not fully matured. This then explains why deviljhos while an apex predator are rare to see in most ecosystems.

      Here's my theory two deviljho if different genders would duel it out first if the male defeats the female then he can have her but if he doesn't then she just straight up kills him now how they raise their young is also interesting but I think the male would leave as soon as he impregnated her then the mother will lay they eggs but to keep them safe she wouldn't have to bury them (which would explain why they have poor eyesight) and then once they hatch they juvenile is ready to set off it's new life but is defenseless against larger monsters so it hunts and kills the smaller ones but then as years go by it's fully matured and covered in the scars or its enemies thus creating the deviljho! this is my theory

    One little tidbit to contribute: Tyranosaurs' relatively small front arms have been found to be, in all likelihood, not at all "useless" as the popular misconception has been for ages.
    Scientists theorize quite soundly that they were used for digging and moving foliage out of the way. Estimates based on measurements of musculature implied by fossil remains place each of a T-Rex's "feeble little stubby arms" at being able to curl around 400lbs each - plenty sufficient for ripping trees and shrubbery out of the animal's way and sufficing for all of its excavating needs (digging pits to sleep in, exhuming other animals and/or their stashed kills, all general 'getting into things the rest of its huge body normally can't' needs).
    Deviljho being so clever it's far closer to a crow than "some dumb lizard," can surely get great use out of such appendages to score a lot of easy scavenged meals outside of just the fresh hunted-down kills that a sizable majority of predators are limited to. Tyranosaurs may well have owed the extent of their dominance as it was to wielding this additional proficiency.
    Meanwhile Rajang gang: ook ook angery monkey r totes stronker cuz Dragonball Z, anime saying emotion > all, and wtf even is logic and biology

    • @defcdfxddvz9609
      @defcdfxddvz9609 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Deviljho does have dragon breath that could be used to clear out debris and deviljho's jaw is strong enough to dig through the dirt so if the arms of deviljho were elongated it might lead to more resistance while traveling underground but I understand what you mean.

    • @you1027
      @you1027 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@defcdfxddvz9609 Certainly Deviljho does have the raw power to brute force his way through most obstructions, but the key point is how easy the arms make getting munchies on the side - the beast doesn't have to work nearly as hard and burn nearly as much energy for them. From a calorie intake perspective, they're a huge quality-of-life boon pushing the equation just that much more in the animal's favor, if it can just pick up exertion-free snacks along its way while seeking out bigger meals.
      This is just an educated guess but I figure Tyranosaurs' forelimbs were really all they ever needed to get the job done; there was some size variation between different species, but the overall trend appears to point to that they found the sweet spot between effectiveness and efficiency for them.

    • @defcdfxddvz9609
      @defcdfxddvz9609 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@you1027 maybe deviljho's short arms are more based on his aggression that in his multiple fights the limbs are more likely to be taken off so the body started to put less effort into something that is only there for a few days

    This is so great! I’ve wanted to do something similar to this for Rathalos for the longest time and I’m so ecstatic to see someone finally gave an in-depth, hypothetical ecology study of a Monster Hunter monster. I especially liked how you were able to derive theories about the nature of some of the creatures characteristics based off of real life phenomenons. Outstanding video man, especially for a monster that doesn’t really have many real life counter parts to compare it to. Hope to see more!
