actually kpop is just a bunch of genres mixed together People are just used to calling "the whole korean music industry'' K-pop. Anyway, happy that you watched this video!
Actually, it is the opposite. K-pop is traditionally defined as a genre that is a collection of genres, which is absurd. Now, it is more appropriately defined as the industry or the idol culture itself because every K-pop song is still can be classified as actual genres hip-hop, r&b, electro, dance, rock, etc. K-pop is basically the pop of Korea.
Full Korean here! Just wanted to maybe help your confusion, Joel. KPop is not actually a genre - it encapsulates many genres such as pop, hip-hop, trot, etc. That is why there are so many different types and why you maybe think things don’t sound “KPop”.
The problem is that internationally, people got habituated to associating K-pop with BTS and BP songs, therefore they expect every other korean song to be just as heavily beat based, 'energetic', autotuney and with good production. I like that you're clearing it up for Joel and the others, but they can't exactly change how they perceive K-pop.
This needs to be upvoted more! I hate how people assume Kpop to be a general pop genre for some reason. KPOP is a brand and not everything has to have a specific sound lol

I felt kind of bad for only recognizing like three songs from before 2013 but I’m still pretty new to K-pop and I knew most of the songs and/or groups from after that
"The word we have in Korea for K-Pop is 'Gaio.' And I guess it's a huge umbrella term. Basically it's like saying Coldplay and Kanye West, or Eminem and Celine Dion, are the same genre." - TABLO
He says "true kpop" to the more original songs and sounds, bc most of the old songs were leaning more to the old west genres, when now the bigger and new kpop artists each has a more original concept and sounds
He keeps saying "oh this doesn't sound like kpop, kpop sounds like this" first of all kpop doesn't just have one sound to it. Kpop is basically a bunch of different genres mixed in it such as rap, vocal, dance and, pop. Some groups may have the girl crush theme such as 2ne1, fx or, blackpink and others may seem more cute and soft such as twice or gfriend.
Kpop isnt just one genre it's more of an umbrella term. all of those sounds like the more bad ass stuff, the rock stuff or the cutesie stuff is all kpop thats what makes it so special!
most esp if they want more Rock-ish Group, they'll literally need to Stan G-friend if they want softer side and Dreamcatcher if they want on the harder side
I've listened to kpop since about 2009 and everyone thought I was a weirdo for listening to it because it wasn't in English. I was just living in the future.
Same. People just looked confused if I told them because they didn't even know what K-pop meant. I stopped listening pretty much after 2ne1 disbanded though and I started seeing how toxic the industry as a whole is so I never got to experience it being popular and I dont know any newer stuff.
Um kpop ofc is pop it has multiple different types of pop but actually it also is a genre and he most likely didn't know that kpop can be like the west where it's many genres because kpop is mostly famous for its certain sound genre which is sounds like dna and ddu-ddu and it's now actually officially considered a genre lol
I'm not a kpop fan, I don't follow much, but I absolutely LOVE exo's songs. I don't listen to so many songs of any other group... Monster, Love shot, Tempo, Call me baby, Ko ko Bop, Overdose
Sry bt before bts kpop wasnt so well recognized in many countries including mine... I got to discover kpop only after bts ... Given that too the impact of BB in shaping kpop industry is impeccable.
I'm a huge Blackpink fan, but I wish more people would go back and listen to the groups that made Kpop. I've been listening to it since maybe 2008 and my first group was TVXQ.
I'm amazed Joel didn't pause at 7th Sense... even 5 years later it's still incredibly different from any other kpop song and one of the most iconic debuts ever.
when you were there since tvxq debut era, you kinda automatically knew almost all of them (98%+ at least) xD i practically grew up with them and have seen the slowly growth of the k-pop. back then those songs were soooo dang good (and still are) it was so nostalgic when hearing them again in order of year like this sobs. of course i don't agree with all of what you've said here in the video but it's understandable from both side.
for most of the times you say its green screen.. its actually a real set. they really are serious in making gigantic sets which always baffles me.. they only use green screen when there is a really difficult fantasy theme .. but when it comes to gigantic cube dance floor they actually do it in a big studio..
weird that BTS's I Need U (2015) wasn't there. that song led them on a more international pathway, it was the song of the year and was known as one of the best songs in K-pop history, there was an article about it. but BTS's blood sweat and tears was there, that song was literally another kpop song of the year. but BTS still wasn't mainstream until 2016-2017 ish
"I need u" and "fire" were the songs that started bts' success in Korea (their first album daesang) and then "blood sweat and tears" led them to be famous internationally (especially with their bbma nomination) and then "dna" stabled the popularity!
"When kpop starts sounding like THE kpop" - and then there's us old fans who miss the times when kpop was more diverse while also having eras with specific Western influences (the 2015-ish tropical house was everywhere, even in kpop, but there were dozens of other music styles as well). Kpop is not just well-produced electronic music with great choreo, it's the pop-rock Dreamcatcher or Day6, it's amazing vocalists like IU and Mamamoo, the cute GFriend and Twice pop, the powerful B.A.P. and old BTS, the experimental Orange Caramel and Big Bang, the retro Infinite and T-ARA... K-pop has had milions of fans internationally before BTS and Blackpink exactly because it had a specific flavor, but it was also as diverse or even more diverse than Western music. I mean TVXQ had entered the Guinness World record for the biggest fanclub of 800k (I think) before BTS and Blackpink even existed (not dissing them, just comparing time-wise).
@🌴𝘒𝘰𝘬𝘰𝘣𝘰𝘱🌴 i started kpop around 2012 and im obessesed with artists from the 90s to know, everyone has different flavours and style, and mamamoo are my fave girl group with 2ne1,
YASS. I actually started casually listening to SNSD since October 2011, and early 2013, I completely fell down the K-POP rabbit hole. 2Ne1, then BIGBANG, then AFTER SCHOOL and then *goes on rambling about groups and how I slowly evolved into a multi-stan girl group supremacist*
Yessss!!! Actually I don't listen to newer kpop now since I find it too westernized? Or maybe I'm just getting old and miss the old big bang/2ne1/snsd/super junior days 😂
One of the songs you hadn’t heard before but liked (Blood, Sweat, and Tears by BTS) is actually beautifully done and I think if you listen to it, watch the music video and then look at a video where people explain all the “hidden” aspects of the song because it had soo much even just in the background and it was beautiful. From the lines RM says to the paintings and feast, everything in the video pretty much means something. It got me into kpop and I was surprised learning everything about it.
Kpop in real kpop stan world isn't just bts obviously, there are LOTS of groups and hits that are still hits even if they aren't listened in the usa, it's no surprise they don't appear more, they have hits but this is more realistic if you really wanna know kpop as a whole
yep and "I'm a flying butterfly" which is I think a little old korean band song even became popular in UK, correct me if I'm wrong though. >>I wish he played the opening of I wait in jae's part.
Lmao, true. It is quite triggering if people generalize everything about K-pop, when I just dedicated a big part of my childhood to SNSD, f(x), EXO, Wonder Girls, 2NE1, BIGBANG, and Super Junior.
true but they forgot the most legendary songs such as i need u,run, spring day,danger.... and remember it's not armys' fault that people think kpop is BTS
Funny how they excluded BTS in K-pop before but now that they made a name in the west, people keep on saying it's not only BTS and BTS didn't pave the way for other groups, like obviously yes there's those legendary groups who made it to the west but it's only when BTS became known in the west, the kpop became mainstream there.
I definitely think that Joel should listen to a bunch of critically acclaimed J-pop artists like Yoasobi, LISA, Kenshi Yonezu, etc. I mean Japan's the 2nd biggest music industry in the world, so I'm sure they're significant enough to react to :)

I also have an underlying guilty pleasure for this song without knowing why or how this happened. I had my phone on shuffle plugged into my car just yesterday and Gangnam Style came on (I have the oddest range of genres and also would never plug my phone into any open DJ at a party as it could be worse when I have Gangnam Style, then Negro y Azul from the introduction of a breaking bad episode of which I know all words to in Spanish as well as now a few Narco style songs which is niche, then on comes Locuste Iste 4 part Latin voca harmony from before the 20th century next, yes all words are also known due to it being an academic study piece for me but I love it) but the Gangnam shuffle hit me and I was not mad in the slightest. I was just as much my 19 college self loving this bop ten years on, then followed Georgia by Ray Charles and as much as I love, it did bring down my hyper bopping driving to Gangnam at full blast. It’s an unironically bop and I hate it because I cannot explain why it hits so hard but it’s also so so bad! It’s just a sweet spot for me too!

What struck me was how few of the songs he knew. Also, the selection was quite hit or miss and he rarely if ever got the context. Nothing “Ultimate” here. For example, while he got GG’s Into the New World, for example, he didn’t understand its significance. He got Exid’s Up and Down, but not the famous Hari fan-cam that launched the fan-cam craze (and saved, more than saved, Exid’s career). There are certainly fans who like, say, Twice or Itzy better than BP, but he really should have emphasized BP’s overwhelming recent dominance as a group and as soloists, matched only by BTS. He missed or underplayed top soloists, such as IU or Sunmi, who, by the way, write many of their own songs. Quite a few of the songs were from early in the groups’ careers, which didn’t let them shine or show their progress. I agree with the comments that KPop is a broad tent, it’s like calling all U.S. popular music USPop. All in all, a mediocre and not very informative piece of work, and that’s leaving aside my mild distaste for the occasionally snarky tone.
@Eman ik dude, but we gotta stay hopeful skdkks no i mean they were meant to play at a live event, but covid happened, now it's confirmed that GD is working on songs and they resigned their contracts 👉🏻👈🏻

I was more into kpop when I was in high school/college around the early 2000s or late 90s. I liked H.O.T., Shinhwa (still does some stuff today), Click-B. Baek Ji Young was cool coz she was doing a lotta fusions especially with salsa. Lee Jung Hyun had a lot of techno ish music and was trying to do a think where she put the mic (when not lipsyncing) on her pinky and danced like that. Then I'm a fan of rock and technoish stuff so I loved a lot of stuff that Moon Hee Jun did. I've been away for a long time and when I was trying to make a demo my producer got me into Brown Eyed Girls. I was complaining to him about how some newer groups were copying older groups and he admitted he helped with one of those as well. Now I'm starting to come back with BTS and Black Pink

i'm old school kpop fan, but I don't see any reason to get offended. When I was a kid I listened to pussycat dolls and 50 cent, something I would never listen to today because as a grownup that music doesn't seem that good anymore, and I wouldn't listen to the old kpop either aside from a few songs. You know, people also feel nostalgic about the Soviet Union, but Soviet Union was still a shitty place to live. Just because you're a fan of something, being mad that somebody doesn't like it as much as you and says it out loud is stupid. Emotional overreactions are not cute.
As a kpop fan I'm slightly disappointed that this list only goes to 2018 since there's so many iconic songs recently but I'm happy he finally did a whole video about kpop! Also Joel if you do this again PLEASE include ateez & stray kids I feel like quite a few of their songs are iconic.
imagine Joel listening God's menu :D That could be fun... Or Pirate king, Answer, Fireworks... Eh. But I think it's quite hard to say it's iconic bcs it's still new.
The video missed Superhuman by just a few months 😭 and I think it's safe to say God's Menu and Kick It are already iconic even tho it's been just 1 year lmfao. I mentioned in another comment tho, they didn't include VERY NICE and Move, like c'mon...
I've only listened to a bit of K-pop in my time (my go-to Asian music style is kawaii metal) but is it a K-pop thing to call good songs "iconic"? Because, as good as some of these songs might be, I don't know if something that's 5 years old can be considered iconic
That song blew up in the Philippines because of this certain loveteam called AlDub. They were massive, become the most tweeted in Twitter in that time lol.

@@YourFoodIsBland agree bro but my point is that everything ends one day and I think K-Pop artists wouldn't be remembered as some rock bands like The Beatles or some pop artists... I'm findings this late, but it makes me sad that there is so much cultural context missing from this! Those songs by Wonder Girls at the very beginning were crazy popular in Korea at the time exactly BECAUSE they sounded old fashioned during a time when most Korean music trends were chasing more of the Western pop sound and literally no one in mainstream Korean music had that sound. Also, this is entirely missing the 90s Kpop scene which makes me so sad because 90s boy bands and girl groups are the OGs who started all of this. And yes... they'll sound more like old Western pop too because it was literally just "pop" music that was made for normal Koreans who couldn't understand or speak English. Also, a lot of those Kpop songs from long time ago were also produced by Western artists...
i just think it's jyp. disco seems to be his kind of thing as seen in his own mv and twice. also nobody was pretty big. they tried breaking out in america and kind of failed like snsd and boa. but honestly laid the road down for psy and bts. i remember seeing posters of their first us concert when i was in college
I feel groups like Shinhwa, G.O.D, H.O.T, Sechs Kies, Fly to the sky and S.E.S were sorta the original kpop groups. Tvxq, super junior and girls generation came later. I also feel its a bit weird (tho I understand that Joel says it) when he calls kpop Japanese influenced, when jpop got heavily influenced by Korean pop during the tvxq and girls generation era 😊
YES YES YESSSSS! Yes to all of what yinz are saying. I was thinking the same things! H.O.T. is my #1 favorite & I hoped it'd be in this video. BOA & Shinhwa were high on my list as well. But I was in love w Moon Hee Jun from H.O.T., total fan girl lol.
Dear Roomie, Kpop is not only an amazing production + big vocal packages + edgy harmonnies. There is a loooot more stuff to consider, and even kpop has different subcategories: the cute, the sexy, the cool, the badass hahaha it's like general pop! Not everything has to sound like BTS to be considered kpop (even BTS has a wide range of different styles)
The thing is that the point of calling it K-pop is because it's not a genre but just popular music in Korea, it is an umbrella term and actually has so many genres under it. Of course the most popular especially as an export is idol music(boy groups, girl groups, few co-ed groups, soloists that usually came from groups...) but there are also bands, r&b artists, indie artists, rap artists and etc. but the idol groups themselves always experiment with different genres. On the other hand I think that the most popular for the Korean general public are actually ballad singers and trot singers but they aren't really included in the term K-pop as they are considered musicians and not idols in South Korea and they aren't really an export of the Hallyu wave. That's why a lot of the songs sound outdated or J-pop to you but they are actually just doing their own thing; they are often following the trends in the west but always adding their own flavor be it the nostalgic sound of past decades(11:36 Wonder Girls literaly had the retro concept from their debut in 2007 they did the 90s,80s,60s...) or the J-pop feel(old Gfriend songs always had that fairytale and anime sound to me). Maybe 1st gen K-pop and some 2nd gen songs could really be outdated but half of the things mentioned in the video as outdated was made like that on purpose. K-pop is all about concepts, each comeback is different but the point is to still have a signature sound of the group/soloist. One comeback you could have a hard-hitting EDM song about partying with an empty drop chorus and the next you could get an upbeat breakup song that is mainly vocal driven. Kpop is a lot of things not just BTS and Blackpink.

actually kpop is just a bunch of genres mixed together
People are just used to calling "the whole korean music industry'' K-pop.
Joel: ...in a language they don’t understand
also Ailee: being American and speaking English
I think he meant Korean being a language that most Western ppl don't understand
the song wasn't lol
I was looking for this comment
Early-mids 2010 kpop was the most iconic for me. I also find that what Joel thinks is "Jpop-esque" is what I associate as more traditional Kpop.
Dreamcatcher is definetly more Japan esque. Especially with Deja vu
Yes!!! !!!
Bro I feel you cuz im korean and when I asked what's ur favorite genre they say k pop
This needs to be upvoted more! I hate how people assume Kpop to be a general pop genre for some reason. KPOP is a brand and not everything has to have a specific sound lol

Kpop is basically a bunch of different genres mixed in it such as rap, vocal, dance and, pop. Also some includes latin influences, like airplane pt 2 or classical themes like black swan

when you were there since tvxq debut era, you kinda automatically knew almost all of them (98%+ at least) xD i practically grew up with them and have seen the slowly growth of the k-pop. back then those songs were soooo dang good (and still are) it was so nostalgic when hearing them again in order of year like this sobs. of course i don't agree with all of what you've said here in the video but it's understandable from both side.
for most of the times you say its green screen.. its actually a real set. they really are serious in making gigantic sets which always baffles me.. they only use green screen when there is a really difficult fantasy theme .. but when it comes to gigantic cube dance floor they actually do it in a big studio..

weird that BTS's I Need U (2015) wasn't there. that song led them on a more international pathway, it was the song of the year and was known as one of the best songs in K-pop history, there was an article about it. but BTS's blood sweat and tears was there, that song was literally another kpop song of the year. but BTS still wasn't mainstream until 2016-2017 ish
Or Boy With Love. That one was big. Though I guess it was 2019 and they stopped at 2018 sooo... Hehe. Sorry
"I need u" and "fire" were the songs that started bts' success in Korea (their first album daesang) and then "blood sweat and tears" led them to be famous internationally (especially with their bbma nomination) and then "dna" stabled the popularity!
Well..maybe He didn't know
"When kpop starts sounding like THE kpop" - and then there's us old fans who miss the times when kpop was more diverse while also having eras with specific Western influences (the 2015-ish tropical house was everywhere, even in kpop, but there were dozens of other music styles as well).

I listened to Gangnam Style on repeat for over an hour once and I regret nothing.

I also wasnt expecting it to end in 2018. So many revolutionary kp Op songs and artists cam out in 2019-present. Such as Stray kids(2018), itzy, txt, aespa, enhypen, everglow, weeekly, stayc, ect.
@@soggy_snale3038 majority of the groups you mentioned haven't done anything that big yet? Aespa, weeekly and stayc have had like one comeback max, enhypen also just debuted a while ago. Itzy, txt and skz at least have a stable career

This is basically a 'try not to get offended' for old school kpop fans 😭
Edit: I think a lot of people misunderstood my comment. I'm not mad at him or anything 😂 ngl the video hurts a bit to watch but this comment was supposed to be a joke😅
Yes...very very hard. Seems so rude. Please hope he never reacts to 90s and early 2000s kpop. Ugh.
It's not funny. It's rude to compare the music of another country to yours.
yes im offended hahahahahah it was better earlier
i'm old school kpop fan, but I don't see any reason to get offended.

Amen to this 😩💞
As a kpop fan I'm slightly disappointed that this list only goes to 2018 since there's so many iconic songs recently but I'm happy he finally did a whole video about kpop! Also Joel if you do this again PLEASE include ateez & stray kids I feel like quite a few of their songs are iconic.
That'd be so good 🙏🏻
imagine Joel listening God's menu :D That could be fun...
Yes please!!!
You should do an updated version but with more artists. There are so many amazing artists
'Fantastic baby' was a big hit song on Asia. How come that it didn't reach on europe that Joel didn't even knows that that song exist...
Don't worry, it did reach Europe (I'm from Europe as well, and I certainly knew it)
I agree, I am also from Europe and all my peers knew it :P
That song blew up in the Philippines because of this certain loveteam called AlDub. They were massive, become the most tweeted in Twitter in that time lol.
It did reach Europe, I'm from a small country and some friends showed me the song
I didn't even listen to kpop back then and I had seen that music video. Song was huge
You cant deny the fact that The K-Pop artists creating such edgy , catchy , dansable , viby music for a decade or more ..
And Ya'll never get bore of them .
Thanks Joel for discovering such great music .
well i'm sure it will end one day and only 3-4 artists (mainly bands) will age normally
Kind of like what happened to rock
But it is still better to witness k-pop's rise live than witnessing it on youtube or whatever there is the future
@@harshaggarwal1918 I don't think so. Kpop combines many genres and goes with the time. Just like pop music, it will match the time's spirit and thus won't get outdated. Kpop will evolve and be formed with the trends, it's not going to stay one thing. I mean that's also basically what the video has just proven lol
@@eileenskof4926 let's see what happens...
I believe only parts of K-Pop music will age and majority of it will die and there was one time when everyone believed that rock music will live on forever but now most of it has died
If you disagree I totally understand your point and there is nothing we both can do to tell the future
@@harshaggarwal1918 Kpop has just started to rise... Also, it's more than pop music...
@@YourFoodIsBland agree bro but my point is that everything ends one day and I think K-Pop artists wouldn't be remembered as some rock bands like The Beatles or some pop artists...
If you want them to age better your fanbase needs to mature because no matter how much facts you spit everybody considers your fanbase as a bunch of 13-14 year olds
Yes!!! I would have loved to hear some shinwa, rain, yoon mirae, seotaji and the boys, the young Turks club, tiger jk, 2pm
The amount of nostalgia that hit me. as a 2nd gen kpop stan i crieddd😭
Dear Roomie,
Kpop is not only an amazing production + big vocal packages + edgy harmonnies. There is a loooot more stuff to consider, and even kpop has different subcategories: the cute, the sexy, the cool, the badass hahaha it's like general pop! Not everything has to sound like BTS to be considered kpop (even BTS has a wide range of different styles)
it's a shame they didn't include some old BTS releases in the video
basically kpop is not just a genre
100%
Yea BTS have covered a whole lot of genres. It's just random people now considering their new releases only.
Amen.
Yeah and even bts and blackpink aren't just one sound
@@sophiam.krager3815 Exactly, listening to their bsides you can find a variety of genres. But sadly non-fans will still think BTS and BP are the pinnacle of kpop while there's so many high quality groups with great songs
@@keikei7089 I agree
