    Those sound best with a 2nd order high pass resulting in an approx 750 hz acoustic cross to substantial (2x15”) woofers on baffles about 20” wide.

      Right on Connor, very soon I will be establishing a library. In this library I will have high resolution sound clips of the gear that I am comparing. I will use professional microphones and a professional mic pre and recording device. This way you will get a bonafide real representation of how things sound without the compression we find on TH-cam. these will be on my 11 stereo.com website. So check it out man !

    Is it just me or is it that all Tangband full range speakers above 5 inch have a nasal twang to female voices. Any of their speakers up to and including 5 inches sound just perfect. Their W5-1611SAF sounds perfect without the nasal tone to females voices and all they need is an eight or ten inch SVS sub crossed over at 60 hertz to round out the bottom end which is more than adequate for a 20*20*12 feet room. First I thought it was my desktop speakers playing truant but the nasal tone is being confirmed by other listeners too.

    Hey, use the whole wall behind your stereo as a buffle, put them on the wall in the appropriate distance between them, and the right hight, depending on your listening position.
    You will be astonished from the sound in the low range frequencies as well...
    This way you will avoid the low frequency acoustic annihilation that take place in the small buffle that you use here...

    I found something about FR drivers.
    One's that are deeply conical tend to not have as much med control as the lesser conical FR drivers. So I will be looking at those confined space car FR drivers that go in thin doors etc.. I had some $60 deep conical drivers that were LITTERALLY KILLED by $10 shallow cone drivers of the same diameter. And it happened with other deep cone drivers I bought as well (way too much "squark"). Interesting stuff. Try some really shallow cone drivers and see if you can hear the difference. Shallow cones are way more mellow but still heaps of top end. I'm not saying this is the case for every driver but it does seem to be a tendency. And the expensive 8" Visaton FR drivers are particularly shallow cones (and they are AMAZING on TH-cam). But I bought some 4" Visatons (same brand with DEEP cones) and they were so bad that you couldn't even listen too them, and they went straight into the garbage. So this is at least a hypothesis (yielding towards a theory). Anyway cheers Big Ears!

  • @Paul7mac
    @Paul7mac 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    A horn is not to give the appearance of a bigger box to the driver. Its a horn of bass dimensions tuned to boost within an octave. like an alpine horn or a euphonium in the latter you alter the tube length by the use of the valves which lowers the tone of the lip vibration by changing the impedance.

    Listening on my Focal speakers (low and mid profile ranges), which if you know these are mostly flat and or uncolored with these speakers (Plug in)
    . They seem to need a passive crossover / EQ banding to be better. Also any cabinet you build aim for dispersion with these.

    Love the gear...thanks for sharing...not meaning to be rude or anything but isnt the test a bit pointless when the mic is the bottleneck? If your front end ie mic/cables/pre/converter was as ornate as your hifi...it would be great but to me, it sounds like you are recording through a very small omni electret mic and Im hearing mostly the room?

    • @OCDHIFiGuy
      @OCDHIFiGuy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Even Better Mark, I'm recording with my Samsung smart phone. We are not trying to critique the utter efficacy of each product but rather compare them to one another for reference. That way if you've heard one in real life you will know. Oh yeah, the other is more detailed or less detailed or whatever it may be.
      I do have microphones $1K per mic, a tube mic pre microphone, cables made from pure solid silver foil, yadda yadda. But my point is made well enough. Doubt you are hearing much of the room as its treated, but it is possible. Again, this is for entertainment and comparing Sonics as compared to one another as the only reference.

    I did build an open baffle with the same drivers, a very simple design , the bottom end was supplemented by rythmik 12 sub around 120hz. Good sounding one, a bit hot sounding :) . But i eventually replaced them with sony coral baskets, 4 inch speakers. I preferred the sony eventually, it had better imaging then the tangband and it only costed me 75$

    • @Justwantahover
      @Justwantahover 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I got some 5" FR drivers for $10 a pair. A really thin cone for great detail and lack bass a bit. Ran with an extra woofer, that's good cos it's less excursions and less Dopler @ crank volumes. The driver is mounted over and just above the speaker hole with a gap under the driver so it's semi dipole with the sound from the back of the cone escaping through the gap, along with the bass from the woofer inside the box. The speaker hole has a bass vent tube ring just under the speaker hole to stop the bonky sound and fatten the bass. It also acts as the woofer bass vent with the FR driver just over it. A FR driver with fat "point source" bass surrounding it and way less Dopler in the treble med. The sound is so good that (with some recordings) I sometimes mistake voice sounds from the recording to be someone in the room even if there is nobody else in the room. It startles the me for a second and when I realise I laugh and celebrate.

    Just as a heads up. If you decide to keep these speakers open baffle, you should consider putting them in a bigger baffle. Because of the baffle step I can only imagine that your bass response on these are falling off quite early. A larger uniform baffle should help give them a bit more meat at the bottom end. You are probably already aware of this, but I thought I would make a comment just in case.

    Do you think a reverse horn baffle could help to get Bass with an open baffle? Maybe use something similar to the fiberglass Mid-horn design of a hORNS Universum into a top-breath front-loaded horn in order to reduce turbulence, maintain the airflow levels towards the driver and generate bass.
