As a woodworking hobbyist of some years, your video provided a calming, informative and most enjoyable interlude. This school holidays my daughter (6), son (8) and I are making a pair of bedside tables just like yours with the addition of a lower shelf. We are makers and our kids will really enjoy working on this fine project. Many thanks and cheers from Sydney, Aust - Dave

I could have used this video earlier this year when I built a similar side table! I had never made a drawer before, and ended up finding some plans that showed basically the same techniques, the exception being that the drawer bottom is 1/4" stock, not beveled 1/2" stock. There really isn't much information on the internet about making drawers. That fumed quartered oak is gorgeous!

Well, after many years of safe happy woodworking, last Tue night I was cross cutting the legs for 2 tables like these I am making. In a careless instant I glanced the spinning blade of my tablesaw (yes, no safety hood) with the back of my left fingers and in a microsecond all digits were cut badly, including the loss of 50% of the knuckle and cartilage of my ring finger, knuckle damage to my thumb, loss of nerves to my middle finger and several severed tendons. The recovery will be significant and I may not regain anything like normal function. Working late at night when tired with no safety cover (I know of few who leave theirs on) and my mistake was almost inevitable. So take care friends - please don't work tired! This is a tough time for this Aussie pianist. Regards, Dave

@@WoodAndShop Many thanks Joshua - very kind. I'm just back from seeing the surgeon and early signs are good. I've always preferred hand tools but will continue to use my beloved machinery as required. When I can get back to it my 2 bedside tables will incorporate much of your construction techniques and I may throw in a few wedged tenons or exposed dovetails if they can be done subtly (doubtful). Really love watching your videos - they are a real blessing to me, incapacitated as I am at the moment! Many thanks - Dave

What if you increased the dimensions for width and turned this into a hall table? And instead of having a single drawer you did two drawers? Could you cut out two holes in the front apron instead of using rails? Or if you used rails what would go between the two drawers and between the rails? And how would those drawer runners join with the front and rear aprons? I love this video it’s so helpful. Thank you.

Given the orientation of the grain on the buttons, won't the lip be prone to cracking off when you tighten them down @4:33? I feel like the grain should run straight in to the mortise. Beautiful side table either way!

4:37 - the "buttons" holding the table top down should have the grain running in the other direction, for greater strength. Tables often get shifted & lifted by the top, but you'd likely get away with it on such a small table as this.

    • @WoodAndShop

You're welcome Joe. The double tenon keeps the piece more stable. Sometimes a tenon can twist in a mortise a bit. That would cause the drawer to not fit.

    • @WoodAndShop

Hi Gary. Quartersawn isn't required for ever part of furniture, but for parts that require real stability, or beautiful figure, it is best. Most hardwood lumber yards will have quartersawn lumber. Just ask the workers.

It's a Civil War era song called "Hard times come again no more" written by Stephen Foster, and performed by my friend Jonathan Lubeck.

Ammonium Hydroxide is commonly called Ammonia. It is used for cleaning.

Why do the call it an end table? Why not a beginning table?

You're right! Instead of being "ends" to a sofa or bed, why not call the sofa or bed a "end sofa" or "end bed"? :)

No disrespect sir, the noise of your dry mouth are disturbing. But i shouldn't complain because this is a beautiful video.

This bothers me as well, it isnt dry mouth. It is a mouth tick that is spreading like a virus in North America. I finally found the first instance of it and now I know why it bothers me so much. Pay attention to the boss in Office Space to see it in action. It was obviously behing lampooned by Mike Judge, but the tech industry didn't notice and adopted it as a normal speech pattern.
I love his woodworking, so I try not to let it bother me too much, but it is VERY excessive.
