It’s a good scheme, except that TDS is levied which you need to later claim in your ITR. If you fall in any of the tax slab, then it doesn’t make sense to deposit in it. Otherwise, it’s a very good scheme as long as the dividend is fixed at 10%.
In PPF we will only get a 7.1% return and that too for a minimum investment period of 15 years. Similar interest rates can be obtained from FD in cooperative banks in Kerala for 1 year.

Good information Sharique. I've been investing in PPF since FY2014 and it is giving a good return till now. I suggest everyone to invest as a lumpsum amount before 5th April every year in order to get the full interest for the financial year. I'm investing in that manner. For that, I use to add a part of my monthly salary in my SB account and transfer the entire amount into PPF account directly on 1st or 2nd April every year. I consider this as the safe side of my investments and Stocks and Mutual Funds as the risky part. Hence, I've been maintaining a balanced portfolio.

Eg: for the amount invested in June, you will miss the interest of April and May. But for the lumpsum amount invested in April, you'll get the interest for the entire year.

NRIs are not allowed to invest in PPF. However, if NRIs opened a PPF account before they became an NRI, they can continue it until maturity. In case you want to withdraw the investment before maturity, then you can do so after five years from the date of account opening.
There are a lot of demerits in PPF account... It has a lock in period of 15 years.. And the interest rate gets changed periodically... If you think that interest rate is not good enough, you won't be able to quit. And if you look at the trend of interest rates, it is going down.. you won't be able to deposit more than 1.5 lakh a year. If you deposit in the PPF account amount of 150000 by the starting of April every year then you can get the best out of it. Since this is a long-term investment the compounding interest will work though. Generally we can say PPF account is a safe account just giving a little more than the fixed account interest rate..
