Rethink Subtraction as Adding a Negative Number - [7-1-5]

In this lesson, we will explore the operation of subtraction and rethink the concept of subtraction as the addition of a negative number. When we subtract numbers, we move left along the number line. Another way of thinking about subtraction is to add a negative number. Adding a negative is the same thing as adding a debt. Debt represents what we owe someone else - so adding debt is the same as subtracting from what we already have. Adding a negative number is the same as subtraction, and this will be very helpful when we subtract and add integers.

Wait in grade 6 and I’m doing this book about year 5-6 maths and for some reason it shows subtracting positive and negative numbers. And I look in the thin you said and it shows year 7 .huh,. BUT thank you so much for this lesson. I fully understand the topic of what you were saying.

It is just a definition. In math we have some base definitions and this is one of them. Jason
How do you explain 6 - - 4= ? Subtracting two negatives
It becomes 6+4. The two negatives make a positive and I cover this in other lessons. In English, I don’t not like you means “I like you”. The two negatives together turn it into a positive, just like in English.

Addition is easy compared subtraction on the number line.
e.g John walks a distance of 5km from his home in his morning walk. While returning home, he walks a distance of 3km and take rest. How far is John away from his home and what is the total distance he walked?
Ans: 5-3=5+(-3)=2.
5+3=8.

Sounds like the a b is not meeded
I think this could be a lot clearer. I would say something like if we start with any number "a", If we say let "a" + "b" = 0, we can rename "b" in terms of "a" to emphasize their relationship. So, "-a" = "b". In conclusion "a" + "-a" = 0, thus we can found the Set Z, the "negative numbers". But, in truth, subtraction itself is an abstraction of looking at the the addition of positive and negative numbers. In fact, one could go as far and say that subtraction doesn't really even exist. That is why inventing a new rule in number theory instead of just relying a more simple version that gets the job done, confuses a lot of people. Thinking of subtraction in terms of addition is much more simple and more in line with our real world experience.

I love math. But this is way unneeded. This would make children far more confused than a typical explanation of subtraction. Especially children getting a grip of mathematics.
This is not intended to be taught to second graders learning how to subtract. This is more of a pre-algebra concert that you get into around sixth or seventh grade where you have to start to add and subtract negative numbers. This material is absolutely 100% crucial to master in order to go into pre-algebra and algebra and beyond. Thanks again and have a great day! Jason
