In this lesson, we will learn about the commutative property, the associative property, the identity property, and the zero property of real numbers. We will spend time discussing these properties as they relate to addition and multiplication, and we will gain practice identifying which of these properties are in use in a given equation or expression. These properties are used in all levels of math, from basic math through algebra, calculus, and beyond.

Most of the time we use these basic properties in our calculations but unknowingly. Eg.
a+2a=a×1+2a=a(1+2)=3a. Here both the identity property of multiplication and distributive property has been used.
Can you identify the property involved here? 1) (a+b)+c=c+(a+b).
    2) a(b+c)=ac+ab.

@@SaifAli-gb2zl no, it's of the form a+b=b+a. So it's commutative.

@@hemarajue2736 it's not in the form of a+b =b+a it's (a+b)+c=c+(a+b). Since there are three entities involved here it can't be commutative, because commutative property only holds for two numbers

@@SaifAli-gb2zl it doesn't matter how many variables involved as long as they switch around according to the basic commutative property.

It is wrong to say "order doesn't matter" in connection with associative property. It does NOT say that. It only says the grouping does not matter. Note that on both sides a b c should be written in the same order.
Why is this important? It is important because latter on in life when they learn matrix operations, they should understand that matrices follow associativity but NOT communtativity. The entire quantum mechanics is based on that.
So something follows commutativity or not does not say anything about whether it follows associativity.
