If you have a chance, definitely read "Passionate Friendship" by Deborah Shamoon. It has a wealth of info about pre-war manga and the evolution of the shoujo art style. It also talks about the relationship between magazine editors and their fans. It's really good!
TFW the subs for it all these years later still have mistakes, AND are heavily compressed. I'd fix it myself but I don't quite have the time right now. ...nor have I subbed before. (Also TFW nearly if not the whole series is dubbed and will never be released ;_;)
Honestly, this show sounds kinda amazing. I am just imagining the showrunners in front of a whiteboard going "We need almost 50 episodes and no manga! Anyone got ideas?! Good, we'll use them all", and just running with it. Almost reminds me of the early days of video games, where people had no idea what a genre was and just made games about...the stock market. But I certainly see charm in the unexpected, and this show seems like quite the bag of surprises. Looking forward to seeing how stuff like the 'magic familiar/mascot' character got codified. Mascots like say...cuddly bunnies.
Fun fact: my friend’s 52-year-old mother grew up with Mahou No Mako-chan and she LOVED IT! (She grew up with Cutie Honey, Sally, Akko, Limit, Tickle, and Ecchan) and she got to watch it every Monday night on NET(TV Asahi) before bed at 7:00 pm and she said she was sad it got mediocre ratings
Wow, this show is a beautiful mess. It should really get a remake that has more focus and stuff. It seems like the right time. Great episode as always. Really makes my day. Also cuddly bunnies :P
I'm honestly loving this series. It's so much fun learning about the magical girls history and I can't wait to see more of it! Me and my sister are both excited each time you share a new one. So keep up the amazing work you're doing!
Boy howdy yeah, I especially wasn't expecting to see this much straight-up blood and violence until at least Cutie Honey! Was interesting to see, even if the end result was a big fantastic mess. ❀/)_/) ( . .) C(") (")
Ok so a couple of things I figured might be interesting. For one, Mr. Urashima is probably named after the folk tale character Urashima Tarou, this also sorta explains why he's so kind to animals, since, a huge part of that story is about him saving a turtle from some abusive kids. secondly, while Akira Kamiya is known here in the west for Kenshiro, this wouldn't be his last more cartoony role, since he also went on to voice the ever popular (in Japan) Kinnikuman, and, Fujio Akatsuka's own, Nyarome from Moretsu Ataro, just to name a few
Wow this is awesome! I watched this series when I was a kid in my native Peru. I never could finish watching the whole series so I never knew how the show ended. Almost 30 years later, I can find what happened to all the characters. You did an awesome job, and also made me laugh out loud when explaining some scenes( you Mr. Urashima voice impersonation and how the bear mauls that guy, hahaha hilarous!). I hope you do more reviews about mahou shoujo shows. Keep up the good job and thanks!
I absolutely love this series. I can’t wait for you to get into later magical girl anime but at the same time, learning about the very first examples of the genre is FASCINATING. Keep up the good work!
I love this show - can’t wait to see more! Your research into the voice actors was especially helpful as I felt I could connect more to Mako-chan through other anime I had seen? Well done on such a polished and informative series (+ the hilarious jokes...the ‘you either die a hero’ cracked me up). Someday I would like to make a web series and this is really inspiring!
Oh, I looked into Mahou no Mako-chan before. It seemed to be described like a coming of age story but personally there are much more interesting fairytale orientated magical girl anime like Otogi Jushi Akazukin, Utena, or Princess Tutu from what you're describing here. Also, WTF at 12:14 and everything that came out of it. And yes, girls were perceived as not being able mature themes in the 60's, which plays into why series like Marvelous Melmo caused controversy a decade later. However more mature series seen later on (especially from Year 24) like Kaze to Ki no Uta or Rose of Versailles) made difficult topics more familiar in shoujo. So, Mako-chan seemed to have wanted to pull in older girls but younger ones as well. I can also see conceptually how similar it is to other 60's magical girl shows as well but personally the 80's that period where magical girl shows really seem to be more well rounded and favorable for me. So, I'll be waiting on that.
What was his nane again? Ah right: man guy mcdude-crush. I love this serious can't wait for mermaid melody. One of the first manga i owned and the reason why my mum now calls all anime and manga pitchi mitchi
I think this is my new favorite Mahou Profile so far! I was laughing all the way through the intro part and a bunch of other moments, but you still also managed to tackle the more serious aspects pretty well. Keep up the good work, may your next videos be blessed by the cuddliest of bunnies! Also, I had completely forgotten that you actualy put up a request to hire a Sebastian voice impersonator like years ago and I love how that finaly payed off :P Also FETUSHOOD IS A WORD I NEVER EXPECTED TO HEAR ON PRETTY MUCH ANYWHERE But aparently thats where we are right now and I think Im glad
Thanks so much for the kind words! I had a ton of fun making this one and I think you can tell. This has definitely been my fave to work on so far! Also FETUSHOOD AIN'T EVEN THE HALF OF IT. The 1970s continue to provide plenty of heaping helpings of WTF after Mako-chan. ❀/)_/) ( . .) C(") (")
No problem! Its just nice to see how much your improving in all matter of things and details when it comes to making these. It just makes me even more excited for future instances~ Magical Girl Shows are... a journey to be had for sure
I feel like out of all the anime series from the 70s, this one is the one that would benefit the most from a remake/reboot series. sure it probably would lose some of its random, unfocused charm that adds to some hilarious moments, but considering how great it can get when serious, I think a remake that's more focused on the serious topics would be great to see also cuddly bunnies
Cuddly bunnies~ I didn't know Mako-chan was so revolutionary, nor did I know of this aspect of the progressiveness in the shoujo manga industry and so many other things. Wow, I feel as if I learn so much in these videos and in such a fun way! O: I am definitely recommending this series to my friends that are fans of anime. Btw I have also been a fan of mermaids ever since I was young. The little mermaid was my 2nd favorite fairy tale. I have had a few magical girl mermaid story ideas (and over 15 MG non-mermaid ones) throughout the years but they still remain just that, ideas.
Yeah, the history around both this show specifically and the shoujo manga/anime industries in general is just super fascinating. I wouldn't call it all necessarily progressive (the hiring of female mangaka seems to have been more a marketing decision than anything else, and most editors of shoujo manga are still male), but there are certainly progressive aspects to it all which are good to see. The semi-woke aspects of Mako-chan in particular are really interesting, and it's not surprising that they raised eyebrows. I didn't get to mention it in the video, but apparently the episode with Jim was never shown again in reruns in Japan. Guessing the producers received a lot of complaints about that one from viewers who didn't want their feathers ruffled. ❀/)_/) ( . .) C(") (")
This is definitely my favorite episode so far! Like, all of your videos are super well written and funny, but I had to pause this video a few times to catch my breath from laughing. Mako-chan looks like a TRIP! Thanks for all your hard work, Eryn
One in-joke is that the Urashima surname may be a reference to Urashima Taro, a Japanese folk hero who also had an adventure under the sea. Also, Mako's name and overall design was famously immortalized as Sailor Jupiter.
Wow, such an amazing anime! Very risqué for the time. We love all the Mahou Profile videos, and we can't wait to see Melmo and Ecchan's episode. Thanks for all your work and dedication to rescue all these memories. Cuddly bunnies!
I never realised how right you are. There's a lot of cool story possibilities with mermaids, but a lot of the stuff is underwhelming. Loving this show.
Right?? What is it about mermaids specifically that attracts so many people to include them in stories but then do nothing of interest or quality with them? :P Thanks, glad you’re enjoying the videos!
I've subscribed to your channel for a couple of months but have never got around to watching this series. How much I've been missing out! I'm low key binging in one sitting. Seriously, there are few other video essays like this as you not only put a lot of love and research into your project but you also don't rely entirely on translated sources. Mako-chan is obviously a long forgotten franchise even in Japan AFAIK since blog/twitter posts about it are few and far between and its merches don't seem to enjoy much value amongst collectors either. I myself have never heard of this show unlike other classics like Akko-chan or Sally. Based on your synopsis I'd imagined it to be something a bit like Space Dandy handled by a lot less competent director ending up a total mess, with double the episode counts. However at the end of the video I came to view it much more favourably. Mako's aquatic death/rebirth shenanigans read surprisingly replete with mythological references starting from obvious biblical and Greek ones to Japanese folktales, although I might be reading too much into a series when much less thought were put into producing these TV-manga (as they used to call them back then) targeted at kids. With that said Mako is apparently standing at a really interesting juncture between a preteen kids romp and a shoujo adventure/romance hybrid. Although unlike the titular heroine the show seems to have botched its landing, failing to establish its identity, it nonetheless looks like a show worth revisiting. Thanks for introducing it. Also cuddly bunnies.
Fun fact about Mako's VA: She is also known in the video game fandom as the original voice of Bomberman in Japan throughout the 1990's. No, I'm not making this up.
Thank you for uploading wonderful and fantastic video in each time. I am a japanese man, 55 years old. Namely, the first generation to watch "Maho shojyo series" (At 1966, I am 3 years old and of cource appreciated monochrone "Sally"). Do you know that the first and the second popullar place is "Mako chan" and "Megu chan" for Japanese man !
The intro makes me want to ask you what you think about the two H20 shows. Because while I had my grievances, I liked the shows a lot. Mermaids, aaaaaah 💖☀️ Also, the horny comment made me chuckle. I'll be honest though, most of it did. I love your humour. It's the sparkly jewel to the crown that is your Mahou Profile episodes. I'm glad I'm back from vacation and able to watch your stuff ✨ /Cuddly bunnies
You know, you could make a mermaid profile series, not just about anime but the history and evolution of merfolk. Or made a supernatural profile series where each episode introduces vampires, witches., mermaids etc.
Another fabulous video, Eryn!! I can tell you put so much love into these videos 💕 the only reason I knew about Mahou no Mako-chan was because of this stupid magical girl openings quiz on Sporcle that I’ve taken a few times and the one I always miss is Mako-chan 😂 I’m curious about the show’s finale where Mako contacts Akira (I think that was his name) through spirit. I wonder if that’s a reference to the original Hans Christian Anderson Little Mermaid where the mermaid transcends the physical realm and ascends to heaven as a spirit at the end 🤔 seriously I love these videos and appreciate the work that goes into them! I’m going to read up on the articles you referenced as well 💕 can’t wait for Melmo and Ecchan!
Recently a mermaid anime called Bermuda Triangle: Colorful Pastrale came out. I watched a few episodes, a bit silly but sweet. Maybe you'd like it Eryn!
I am loving this series so far and I appreciate that you take the time to fully delve into each anime. You could’ve easily brushed each episode off as 5 or 10 minute thing, but you really take the time and I appreciate that. Also cuddly bunnies.
i've been waiting to binge this series and i'm glad i did! can't wait to spend my next free hour watching this absolutely golden series! thanks so much for your hard work eryn!! it's really turning out AMAZING!! ps. cuddly bunny ;)
I love this series sooooo much! You put so much research into it and it's really interesting to learn about the beginnings of the magical girl genre! Can't wait for the next episode!
Cuddly bunnies! Took me a few tries before just....slowing down the video to read what you wrote, but I still appreciate learning about these series despite not being able to watch them!
Wow, I love this video series, having been a magical girl fan for a very long time. Looking forward to more. In terms of discussion, first: Cuddly Bunnies. I agree that her response was legit-Mako's degree of care and action is excellent this episode. Considering the character of Akira, the character was always expressed-by his constant jobs-to be searching for something to both support himself and find an identity he could call his own. I bring this up because I'm not entirely sure that it is entitlement that forms his side of the argument, but an impetus to find something he's comfortable not only with himself in, but also something he'd feel happy to express his love for her in. Identity being such a large piece of the work for Mako's perspective, it'd be fair if her love interest shared the same view. Also, the characterization of entitlement, at least in my experience, generally falls male characters who have caring intentions, but have problematic or selfish tendencies. Akira consciously appears to be very conscious of others' needs and expresses care and empathy for others, unless I missed an episode somewhere. It is not like we won't have men and boys-and men who are very boylike-in the future with this series. This was crappy for Mako, but Akira's mistake was leagues beneath some stuff in the future, and I'm mostly thinking stuff in the seventies. He's a breath of fresh air by comparison, especially for the era you're at in Mahou Profile. I'm almost surprised by that more.
I want to continue loving this series and the amount of work you put into it! I can see how much this is a labor of love, and I'm so excited for the rest of the episodes. Cuddly bunnies!
This episode makes me feel like a whole mess of cuddly bunnies! I wish I could watch this show now but unless it's subbed it's a bit outside my abilities.
This is the version of The Little Mermaid that I enjoy the most especially with the first episode where Mako was trying to talk to the Sea Witch while she was almost gonna be eaten by the Sea Jellyfish-like Anemone.
It is next magical girl anime which I watched in polish TV - and yeah it was weird to watch with fully understanding the language and at young age XD Ako is my personal fav from this old animes
Mako-chan to me almost comes off as a spiritual predecessor to Minky Momo, not just in loosely being based on fairytales (Minky Momo on Momotaro, Mako on Urashima Taro along with Little Mermaid), but also in the "We'll do whatever we feel like, no holds barred" approach to episode plots
Wow this show sounds crazy. Sounds like they tried their best making a show completely from scratch though. Also after reading what Italy originally did with Sailor Moon Sailor Stars, that their censoring of this series caused controversy doesn't seem surprising. (Thankfully, I think they rectified their mistake with the re-airing of Sailor Moon in Italy that came with SM's 20th anniversary). Mitsuko Horie! 😊 I had no idea she did so many anime songs! I know she sang one of the versions of "New Moon ni Koishite" (the opening to Sailor Moon Crystal Season 3) and also the opening of the "Emily of New Moon" anime I watched a bit of (based off the L.M. Montgomery novel of the same name). More recently I listened to Galaxia's character song "Golden Queen Galaxia" again because I wanted to cover it. That, naturally, was also sung by Mitsuko. And it is a rocking villain song where Galaxia is like "Look at how awesome I am, I will destroy everything, bow before me and despair." Very different from the other songs I mentioned, or probably the Mako-chan songs. So she has quite a range. Also...cuddly bunnies (though TBH I did not have precise pausing...I slowed down the video). Also I forgot the "Omae wa mou shindeiru" line (aka the "NANI?! meme) came from Fist of the North Star. 😂
Did you notice that as the shows were made, the audience was growing up and maturing? As more shows were made, they took more risks and became more mature, just like how the audience was getting more mature and taking more risks? Also, I cannot wait for the Creamy Mami episode, and CUDDLY BUNNIES!!!
Not even gonna lie but I would LOVE for a remake for so many of these older shows... like with modern view and story lines we could make them even better... like we have the technology and so many amazing artits and storytellers that could make these stories new but not different to the point you couldn't even tell the source material. Also can we mention how Mako passed out because of the PAIN, at least I believe so, it would make sense, that is possible. Also I love so many of Makos outfits omg +0+
1:25 I like your love confession to mermaids. Sounds like me (In Secret) Where can I find more of the episodes. I found and watched Episode 1 but can't find the other ones.
Wow. I learned a lot! From what I recall, Toei's next show was literally Sally but focusing on even younger audiences, like, down to the first episode being the same. Curious considering this one had teen appeal.
Yep! Ecchan came out next in the timeline, but Chappy was right after that and it definitely comes across as an attempt to remake Sally. Should be interesting to cover that one!
Hey ! First i have to say cuddly bunnies ! i have been following your channel for a lot of time now maybe even 1 year. Never got to comment but i just wanted to tell you i love all your videos and i'm looking foward to whatever is coming next and Mahou Profile #5
Thank you so much!! I'm so glad you enjoy the videos and I'm very much looking forward to bringing out the next Mahou Profile as well! :D ❀/)_/) ( . .) C(") (")
I’m so excited for Mahou Profile to continue so we can get to Hana no Ko Lunlun since I’m currently watching it and it’s pretty good. I would love to see what you think of it.
I thought the cuddly bunnies were the best part of the whole show, speaking personally. Meanwhile I am extremely grateful for the existence of this video series because I've been dying for a comprehensive overview of MG stuff for years now
That whole episode is bonkers and I was going to show even more from it, but cut it down for length reasons. Like, the token bit of magic that Mako does in the episode is making hamburgers appear for them on their date! There’s something that makes me laugh a lot about using this mystical power of the seven seas to conjure up some sweet burg’s. 😂🍔🍔
These videos are so impressive, I love them so much!!!!!!!!! (Also, related hard to what you said about mermaids in the beginning, there should be more good works about them!)
Thank you for such an informative information. I used to college Magical girl trading cards. Akko and Mako was my ultimate favorite all time. By the way can anybody please tell me what anime is at 17:35?
You like mermaids? Bitch, you need to come to my MERMAID DINNING ROOM. We can sip tea, stuff our faces with cake and screech about magical girls and mermaids.
"...and tries to get them killed in a millitary test zone." Somehow, the weirdness of Evangelion is falling into perspective and becoming much easier to understand.
If you're looking for some swell mermaid media, you really need to read webtoon titled "Swimming Lessons for a Mermaid". It's cute, sweet and absolutely hilarious.
The future episode about "Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi" is gonna be WILD, yo.
If you have a chance, definitely read "Passionate Friendship" by Deborah Shamoon. It has a wealth of info about pre-war manga and the evolution of the shoujo art style. It also talks about the relationship between magazine editors and their fans. It's really good!

I gasped when I saw the notification! Wonderful work as ever again à can't wait to see more of this series! Thanks for all your hard work! :)
I really hope you'll explore "Cosmic Baton Girl Comet-San" when you reach that time period!~
Also, cuddly bunnies!
I love your Mahou profile show and it must go on!!!!
This show looks sufficiently nuts. Nice job with the video and those cuddly bunnies.

Always makes me happy to see you show up in my inbox! Keep up the good work
I love this series sooooo much! You put so much research into it and it's really interesting to learn about the beginnings of the magical girl genre! Can't wait for the next episode!
I just have to say... That parting of the sea scene is fucking gorgeous.
Yeah considering this was still the early, early days of the modern anime industry, it's really creative and well-done!
I agree! So happy you responded too :D
I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THISSSSSS
I know I'm late here, but I found a sub file for episode 2. Not sure how accurate it is, but it's available!
Pls fansubbers, pls pick this one back up again. ;A;

2:16 geez here’s that Shotaro Ishinomori anime!
This is the version of The Little Mermaid that I enjoy the most especially with the first episode where Mako was trying to talk to the Sea Witch while she was almost gonna be eaten by the Sea Jellyfish-like Anemone.
This could be remade into something amazing
Watching this review made me excited for your mermaid melody review 😁
It is next magical girl anime which I watched in polish TV - and yeah it was weird to watch with fully understanding the language and at young age XD Ako is my personal fav from this old animes
Mako-chan to me almost comes off as a spiritual predecessor to Minky Momo, not just in loosely being based on fairytales (Minky Momo on Momotaro, Mako on Urashima Taro along with Little Mermaid), but also in the "We'll do whatever we feel like, no holds barred" approach to episode plots
I was fortunate to watch ONE episode of that series. I REALLY wanna watch that series!
Sounds like me (In Secret)
Where can I find more of the episodes. I found and watched Episode 1 but can't find the other ones.
I'm loving this so far! Cant wait for the next one!

Well great, goofy cuddly bunnies, this was a wild ride from start to finish.
cuddly bunnies!!
did you know that you can use the , and . buttons to move through the video frame by frame? ;P! :D!
Finally catching up on this series, and so far it's really good! Cuddly bunnies ;3
I’m so excited for Mahou Profile to continue so we can get to Hana no Ko Lunlun since I’m currently watching it and it’s pretty good. I would love to see what you think of it.
Another great episode Eryn! I'd never even heard of this one :O
I still don't know where can I find this. For some miracle the first episode is on TH-cam, but all the others have gone missing
Also. Just found out this channel searching for mako chan and I'm in love
Yes! I love your channel so much for this great content!
This one was a lot of fun, definitely might need to check this one out for myself just to see how truly insane it is, also cuddly bunnies!
I thought the cuddly bunnies were the best part of the whole show, speaking personally. Meanwhile I am extremely grateful for the existence of this video series because I've been dying for a comprehensive overview of MG stuff for years now
i love that you make this series, i find everything you say, really interesting. also, cuddly bunnies :)
will you do kilala princess it's a manga
No, sorry. This series will cover anime only.
After that hobo incident we dont speak of in polite company...nobody tried to steal Mako's pic-a-nic basket ever again. "...You're already mauled"
Continue this series with Megu-chan!!
Th-the Prince of Germany?
The PRINCE of GERMANY?!
I don't know why but I just found that part the most baffling of all!
Cuddly bunnies!! I agree with your comments and love this series a lot!!! Can't wait for the next part!!
I just lovvvvvveee your videos. They always make my day❤️
Cuddly bunnies!! Another great episode Eryn >x

Thank you for such an informative information. I used to college Magical girl trading cards. Akko and Mako was my ultimate favorite all time.
By the way can anybody please tell me what anime is at 17:35?
Ah cool! Glad to hear from a Mako-chan fan! 😄
That anime you asked about is Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun (Japanese title: Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun)
You like mermaids? Bitch, you need to come to my MERMAID DINNING ROOM. We can sip tea, stuff our faces with cake and screech about magical girls and mermaids.
Holy good lord that Lulu segment... ; _ ;
First but that intro tho.
That part was really fun to work on!
Oh, I thought you meant Makoto Kino/Sailor Jupiter.
OMG A NEW EPISODE!!!!!😃
*clutches heart* goddammit I shoulda heeded the warning of animal death. LULU YOU ARE BEST PUPPER
Your not alone, I LOVE MERMAIDS!!
Mako's grandma looks like a version of Blue Diamond that let herself go, change my mind.
This video and cuddly bunnies made my shift at work bareable. Bless.
