I feel like..... the movie would be better if it was like, an older Akko who BECAME interested in make-up due to her time as a magical girl as a kid and how this Akko is dealing with being an adult without her magic. I dunno, I just feel like the whole premise of the movie could have been better.
OMG !!! That's.....That's actually a VERY GOOD premise. I mean the live action movie was meant to celebrate Himitsu no Akko-chan's 50th anniversary so why couldn't it go with THAT ?! Tell an all new story that featured Akko now as a grown up girl and her trials as well as tribulations in doing things without her magic compact mirror !!!!!
Akko-chan's Mirror just reminds me of all the untapped potential that can be found within the original majokko concept that both the manga and anime industry have mainly abandoned. We have gotten Little Witch Academia, some magicians in Jewelpet, but what people want now is more "mature magical girls." Really, everything the anime industry is going right now feels like a rewind of 90's trends - we had these same kind of shows pop up but now they're no longer just obscure otaku media. And while some may say that, "Oh, Madoka caused it" or dismiss shows before it this would have happened anyway because companies in regard to anime are obsessed with replicating formulas to not crash instead of risking everything on unique concepts. It's like with mecha anime how Neon Genesis cemented real robot shows with shows in response at first analyzing mech heroism but now big robots are used as window dressing for series that are poor romance dramas or older concepts are flanderized. Really for magical girls the 2000's shows are complained about but had some wide variety in series from idols, princesses, witches, and magical girl warriors until around its ending years. You have to search for what you want because even in manga there are a lot of pased up titles due to us not having great lolcalization to what isn't mainstream (battle shonen and fantasy anime). Petite Princess Yucie, Sugar Sugar Rune (manga version only), Jewelpet Twinkle, and Little Witch Academia are all series with witches that feel like modern takes on majokko. Even then we had some good stuff before the era we're in now, you just have to know that this phase is normal and look for series that aren't like this if you are burnt out on it like I am. With fresh ideas an older market for women who watched magical girl anime could be fulfilled with age swapping, seeing these girls go through adulthood, or even just a series more in line with Ojamajo Doremi 16's light novels but being "safe" in marketing is what figure heads want, so replicating ideas without challenging audiences is what we have to deal with.
Wow, I also got pretty emotional just hearing the story of the name episode. I think it's interesting that Sailor Moon also has a disguise pen that let her turn into an adult of some profession; when I first watched it that seemed weirdly unrelated to the rest of her abilities, but it makes more sense knowing that is a very old part of the magical girl genre.
Lol I didn't expect to cry. Akko-chan's series seems to have such a darker tone than Sally's. Like *woah*. Also RIP Takahata. Again, great episode as always. Why aren't they teaching about magical girls at school? Lol

My favorite episode of the 80s version was when Akko tried to help a lost American girl by trying to find a person who speaks English to transform into.
Funny enough, there's even an episode in which the witch Akko stumbles upon a magic mirror that makes her look like somebody else!! XD (that, and also the fact that transforming is THE ONE magic that Akko is good at).
I wld love to see a faithful remake of this since a huge fans of magical girls from the new generation and people who are veterans that never heard of this wld love to see this take.

Great indepth look! I stumbled upon this while in Italy back in 2000 and although it was the 90s version, it was fascinating to watch. Ive only managed to find 10 episodes since then but it's such a fun show!

This is one of the series that I kinda always wanted to read but needed a little push to actually start. Also, omg I reconised the Kamikita twins art style in an instant.
I think this is one of the few TH-cam series that I somehow smile on the inside. I love mahou shoujo, even though I don't watch of the classics (again mostly due to limited resources for English fans, but also a bit lot to swallow through for a adult struggling with life). Though I may not be able to pick up Akko-chan anytime soon (though the "Muse" manga was... "I did not know this is Akko-chan!"), I appreciate every past young mgaical girls for shaping the magical girls we love today. (Even the gritty ones.)

The writing for this episode was incredibly well done and retained the emotional quality that can be lost when discussing older media. I was really excited to see the brief writing on the magical outsiders you included though, since it discussed Nina one of my favorite characters of all time! I can't wait to see what you do with her and the other magical girls along the line♡

DarkTao There's been like a bunch of random shoujo series with weird age gaps but in general the relationship between Nozomi and Nuts is at least less hands on than some series. I'm not necessarily saying it's normal but Shugo Chara! bothered me a lot more even as a kid with Ikuto's crush on Amu. He's jumped in bed with her, talk about how warm her body is, saw his former friend (who is also in Amu's grade) as a rival, and still confessed his love to her at the end of the manga. Personally this is why there aren't too many couples I'm too fond of with series like this in general and I'm glad a few have addressed how weird this trope is.

In defense of this ship I'll say the fairies take form of some kind of human but that doesn't mean the actual fairy is over 20. He can be 14 for all we know or over 400 years old. It's a gray subject but still I adore the two since PreCure rarely explores romance to that degree.

this video solved a mystery for me :D Utsu-P's song The Magic of the Massacre / Minagoroshi no Majikku contains considered repeated chanting of "tekumaku mayakon!", which the English subs I've seen tended to either leave untranslated or translate literally as technical magic my compact, which without the context was baffling it happens to a metal song with some screamo bits, so not generally where you expect to find magical girl references
At least, I will commend your efforts for watching the actual series you are talking about. I'm tired of reading stuff on older magical girls shows written by people who haven't watched them for real. It makes your argument much more credible and useful. These very old shows are surprisingly more interesting to watch than one could think and the characters are often much stronger than modern ones. Continue your good work.
I remember coming across Akko Chan by accident in the Spring of 1973. It was broadcast on Sunday afternoons on KWHY UHF channel 22. Akko Chan and Astro girl were the first anime girls that appealed to me.

Great, time for one of my childhood animes!... well, it didn't take long to reach it, I watched the remake of the late 90s and it wasn't really well known, sadly, this anime is clearly forgotten... with Osomatsu-san's popularity and Tensai Bakabon getting a new adaptation this summer, both series being from the same creator as Akko-chan, and last time that both had a remake Akko-chan got one too, I expect Himitsu no Akko-chan to get a new remake... not this year, but maybe on the early 20s?
I think there’s definitely room for another Akko-chan remake! Would love to see how our current animation and storytelling sensibilities would treat the concept.
Would that I could. I unfortunately have a full-time job, and with Mahou Profile it takes a long time to watch the shows, research them, write the script, record the voiceover, get the audio mastered and edited, and edit the video. I physically cannot get these done much faster than I already do at the moment, sad to say. :(

I have to say that I really wanna see episode 2. One of my favorite single episodes of any anime ever is episode 6 (I think) of Hime-chan no Ribbon in which Hime-chan gets stuck in the body of her classmate after her magical Ribbon is torn. It’s a really affective episode and I think it might have been inspired by the second episode of Akko. I really hope that when and if you ever get to Hime-chan you cover that episode cuz it;s soooo good.
i like how erza in fairy tail transforming in the anime an manga its fast and seems better for combat and see a charterer transforming over and over again unless its a new power up gets old
I hope that viz media can make an actual English step of the original 60s episodes of himitsu no acco Chan but it could be impossible for them to do since mainly all of the episodes were eons before viz media was even born
I’m surprised Akko hasn’t gotten an animated reboot by Bang Zoom! Entertainment or Funimation yet! :) Like, you mentioned her magical girl Anime is the 2nd most popular of all time, and thinking that, you’d think they would at least revive her series and reboot her. The really sad thing from that is that there isn’t really much out there of her and her franchise kinda just faded since 1998. :( They should bring her back! :) Even Tatsunoko Production would do amazing making an amazing Anime reboot of her, I mean, look at how far and amazing their animes and animation are nowadays and how of a much better job they do of it nowadays since they first started out with “Speed Racer” And Astro Boy”! (Even though those two are two of my favorite Anime’s. :) I can even imagine the company that does Sailor Moon reviving her! :)

I don't know if this Anime good or bad,but this anime also aired in national channel on my country for kids in close time to original airing date Sadly,they opened a national kids channel and they don't air this kind of series like in old times and test airing of this kids channel... And this Anime looks more entertaining,emotional and had more aesthetic animation than this kids channels all the animations,i think kids channels(especially on my country)devolving instead of evolving...
WAIT A MINUTE!!!! Where does this put, Ha-Chan, Hime, Milk, Pekorin, Makoto, Iona, Ruru, and Lala from Pretty Cure?! I mean they fit into both categories of Magical Outsider and Homegrown Heroine! Example: Hime is the princess of the Blue Sky Kingdom and her becoming Cure Princess (it happened off screen) and her realizing her powers and using them responsibly them is a HUGE part of her character arc (Homegrown Heroine) but her adjusting to not having people meet her every demand and adjusting to earth things like school is in her arc as well (Magical Princess/Outsider).
Hybrids definitely exist, you’re right! Even with the biggest magical girl of all time, Sailor Moon, while I would argue she is mainly a Homegrown Heroine, you could argue she is also partly a Magical Princess. Those two types are just the most prominent and broad categories of magical girl. There are exceptions to the big categories, but there’s generally not enough cohesion among them to form their own separate category. So yeah, hybrids is what I would call them!
The movie is grate, and there is not all the romance you mentioned, you edited the video to make it appear like that, but in the movie in fact it is not like this, it is a grate movie
Far from it! All the early Toei magical girl series are pretty well preserved. All of Akko-chan 1969 has been released on DVD in Japan. They’re absurdly expensive to import though, so I ended up having to torrent them. Working torrents are hard to come by, but not impossible.

New Polish viewer here. The series was one of the very first anime to make it to Poland as Czarodziejskie zwierciadełko (Magical Mirror).

In defense of this ship I'll say the fairies take form of some kind of human but that doesn't mean the actual fairy is over 20. He can be 14 for all we know or over 400 years old. It's a gray subject but still I adore the two since PreCure rarely explores romance to that degree.

this video solved a mystery for me :D Utsu-P's song The Magic of the Massacre / Minagoroshi no Majikku contains considered repeated chanting of "tekumaku mayakon!", which the English subs I've seen tended to either leave untranslated or translate literally as technical magic my compact, which without the context was baffling
it happens to a metal song with some screamo bits, so not generally where you expect to find magical girl references

At least, I will commend your efforts for watching the actual series you are talking about. I'm tired of reading stuff on older magical girls shows written by people who haven't watched them for real. It makes your argument much more credible and useful. These very old shows are surprisingly more interesting to watch than one could think and the characters are often much stronger than modern ones. Continue your good work.

I remember coming across Akko Chan by accident in the Spring of 1973. It was broadcast on Sunday afternoons on KWHY UHF channel 22. Akko Chan and Astro girl were the first anime girls that appealed to me.

Great, time for one of my childhood animes!... well, it didn't take long to reach it, I watched the remake of the late 90s and it wasn't really well known, sadly, this anime is clearly forgotten... with Osomatsu-san's popularity and Tensai Bakabon getting a new adaptation this summer, both series being from the same creator as Akko-chan, and last time that both had a remake Akko-chan got one too, I expect Himitsu no Akko-chan to get a new remake... not this year, but maybe on the early 20s?
I think there’s definitely room for another Akko-chan remake! Would love to see how our current animation and storytelling sensibilities would treat the concept.

I have to say that I really wanna see episode 2. One of my favorite single episodes of any anime ever is episode 6 (I think) of Hime-chan no Ribbon in which Hime-chan gets stuck in the body of her classmate after her magical Ribbon is torn. It’s a really affective episode and I think it might have been inspired by the second episode of Akko. I really hope that when and if you ever get to Hime-chan you cover that episode cuz it;s soooo good.

I hope that viz media can make an actual English step of the original 60s episodes of himitsu no acco Chan but it could be impossible for them to do since mainly all of the episodes were eons before viz media was even born
I’m surprised Akko hasn’t gotten an animated reboot by Bang Zoom! Entertainment or Funimation yet! :) Like, you mentioned her magical girl Anime is the 2nd most popular of all time, and thinking that, you’d think they would at least revive her series and reboot her. The really sad thing from that is that there isn’t really much out there of her and her franchise kinda just faded since 1998. :( They should bring her back! :) Even Tatsunoko Production would do amazing making an amazing Anime reboot of her, I mean, look at how far and amazing their animes and animation are nowadays and how of a much better job they do of it nowadays since they first started out with “Speed Racer” And Astro Boy”! (Even though those two are two of my favorite Anime’s. :) I can even imagine the company that does Sailor Moon reviving her! :)

Sadly,they opened a national kids channel and they don't air this kind of series like in old times and test airing of this kids channel...

WAIT A MINUTE!!!! Where does this put, Ha-Chan, Hime, Milk, Pekorin, Makoto, Iona, Ruru, and Lala from Pretty Cure?! I mean they fit into both categories of Magical Outsider and Homegrown Heroine! Example: Hime is the princess of the Blue Sky Kingdom and her becoming Cure Princess (it happened off screen) and her realizing her powers and using them responsibly them is a HUGE part of her character arc (Homegrown Heroine) but her adjusting to not having people meet her every demand and adjusting to earth things like school is in her arc as well (Magical Princess/Outsider).
Hybrids definitely exist, you’re right! Even with the biggest magical girl of all time, Sailor Moon, while I would argue she is mainly a Homegrown Heroine, you could argue she is also partly a Magical Princess. Those two types are just the most prominent and broad categories of magical girl. There are exceptions to the big categories, but there’s generally not enough cohesion among them to form their own separate category. So yeah, hybrids is what I would call them!

Where did you even find the full 1969 episodes from? I thought they were lost media.
Far from it! All the early Toei magical girl series are pretty well preserved. All of Akko-chan 1969 has been released on DVD in Japan. They’re absurdly expensive to import though, so I ended up having to torrent them. Working torrents are hard to come by, but not impossible.
