From a person who has driven and owned the base and S since '99 to the present. I have seen all the changes, both ups and downs in the perception of the Boxster. It's nice to watch the Boxster grow into a classic and receive the much due respect it deserves. I will never sell this car, that's how good it is. Porsche's best-kept secret is no longer.

People think its all about speed and horse power, but what this video shows is cornering and connection which exactly what people should look for. Connection with the car you love, with the environment and most of all connection with the people around you. My old man always shot me down when I brought up this car, "it's not a real porsche" only to find out that the boxster line helped in bringing more people in and helping the financial problems that porche was having, that means alot more than just hp. This almost made me cry, very touching video. Buy what you love and enjoy it.

I owned a 986 Boxster und used it as a daily driver. I had great drives in the Swiss Alps and some unforgettable moments on snow. It was incredibly practical too. I drive a 996 GT3 MKII now, wich is an entirely different beast but I sometimes still miss the Boxster. If I had the garage space, I would buy a nice example.

Agree, it is actually the better car but because it is currently undervalued, I think people look down on them. I bought 2 recently because they are so much fun. I find myself lowering the window every time I drive anywhere just so I can hear the engine. It sounds beautiful. A car with 50% of a 996 911 including the engine, with the 993 911 steering wheel, seats and gearshift, for a fraction of their cost.

Tiffani, great job. Major kudos for being so adventurous and a PCA Instructor. I want to inspire my wife to love driving Porsches as much as you do 😄 22 year Porsche owner and have owned 6 different Porsches over the years. My first Porsche was a 1998 986 Boxster. I owned that car 20 years and did an engine conversion to the 996 3.4 liter engine. That little 986, especially with a 320 hp 3.4 liter engine, was a hoot to drive. Even when compared to my 911, the Boxster handled better right out of the box. It's just the turn in advantage and confidence that mid engine cars have over rear or even front engine layouts. I will miss that car very much. Replaced it with a 2008 987 Boxster S. Equally fun, but just a bit more modern and looking forward to owning this one a long time as well. Great Video Magnus/Tiffani. keep up the great work Hagerty

My first Porsche is a 944. It's more economical than a Boxster, it's more familiar to many being front-engined, and it's impossible to dislike the pop-ups, but the Boxster would feel like a supercar compared to the 944. What an amazing car the 986 Boxster is! From playing it in Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed as a kid to driving Porsches today, I have always loved this car, and will have one next to the my other unpopular Porsche one day, but I think it would have more character with a manual soft top. I'm surprised Magnus doesn't have one yet, considering their affordability. Maybe a 987 Spyder for his first Boxster? ;) Another great video from Hagerty!

If you want to become a great driver, start with light weight sports with not a lot of power and learn how to drive it fast.

Then I and my wife went to New York City(wife's fun) and back home. My GT4 was great for along-distance trips (I went to the west coast last May in GT4 too) and quite comfortable for a GT car. I think James May from the original Top Gear said it best: "...the Boxster is what the 911 used to be..." It seems true. Small, light, just enough power, nimble, reasonably priced. we love to make mods and more HP is always a good thing !
what mods would you recommend and in what order ?
for us , typically it is tires, brakes , suspension, THEN motor ! on a Boxster S it seems easier tires ? which work best ? michelin ? dunlop ? ?? go to what bigger size wheels ? -huge choice eh !
brakes it, S has upgraded brakes? does it need better still ? what pads are best ? EBC yellow stuff? ( our fave ) yes castrol SRF fluid is a given !
suspension better shocks struts ? brand ?
Motor ! mods to do in order ? mild to wild can we just transplant bigger used 911porsche motors ?
we like NA naturally Aspirated motors ! 300 -350 HP seems good round # ! 🙂
    thx !

I've owned a 986 for the past five years. I test drove a convertible 996 two months ago. I told myself that unless that (same year) 911 was much better, I wouldn't trade up. Not only was it not much better, I prefer the handling of the Boxster on the two lane mountain roads near me. Yeah, I kept the Boxster and saved having to spend double the money 🤑 as well.

@@papatorr3669 there ya go! I had similar thoughts myself.
I own a 986 S. I enjoyed driving my buddy’s 996 C4S, but I wouldn’t pick one unless I needed the rear seats. Then again, my winter car is a BRZ which has equally small rear seats, so I really don’t need the 996.

There was a time the boxter was my fav porsche above the 911. That was when they shared headlights. And it never changed. Since then 911’s can t ‘ake me turn my head. And recent boxters are no headturners eather. Big and fat. Not my thing. Old 911’s or the first boxter. The end.

I don't care what Clarkson said calling it "the Cockster". First off, it pretty much saved Porsche so no Boxster, no 911. Second, it's not like Porsche hasn't been selling entry level models for a long time anyways. 924? 944? The 968 was a bit pricey but still cheaper than a 911. Plus, it brought us the Cayman. A car that would be a world beater if Porsche didn't protect the 911. I love the 911, but damnit, let the Cayman off it's chain.

    • @bryanbautista4939
      @bryanbautista4939 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree. I can only imagine the uproar if corporate tuned the engine of the cayman to match that of the 911. A Cayman turbo S would dethrone the king.

If you're a decent mechanic this car isn't too bad but be prepared for a lot of walking when the transmission goes out or the engine blows up. Proper maintenance is a plus and even for as cheap as they are right now don't buy a 986 without documented maintenance history. Don't go by looks alone.
    Tiffani has a great smile.
