  • How to lubricate the propeller shaft on a 2016 Toyota 4Runner Trail (4WD).
    NOTE: make sure to feel how hard it is to pump when filling the slip yoke, if it’s hard, there is probably enough grease in there, don’t overfill it.
    You will need:
    - a lithium base chassis NLGI No 2 grease
    - a molybdenum-disulfide lithium base chassis grease (NLGI NO2) IF you chose to use this rather than the grease listed above to use on the slip joint
    - grease gun
    - flat head screw driver (if you have trouble removing your gun from the zerk fitting)
    - Mechanics creeper (to slide under the car)
    - paper towels or cloths to wipe grease off
    - light
    **make sure you do your own research and decide which grease you feel most comfortable with and refer to your owners manual for guidance**
    Sorry for the angles on this video, it wasn’t easy to record while working on the truck.

    Get a “lock and lube “ tip to put on your grease gun. Makes it soooo much easier and quicker. Also I agree with the other poster, *in my experience * disclosure, you are not going to hydro lock your slip yoke. That should only happen if there is already damage done. If you buy a new shaft it comes pre packed full of grease.
    I normally put about 10 pumps on the yoke when done on a normal schedule.

      Did the lock and lube tip work also in those tighter spots on the prop shaft? I wonder if the added length to the tip would be an issue on the 4Runner

    • @theMostUNinterestingManAlive
      @theMostUNinterestingManAlive  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@karlkristkeitz7418 yes it did. If you do this yourself, do not do it without the lock n lube. The hard to reach areas are very difficult to detach from without it.

      Thanks for the video. My comments.
      1) If you have jack stands, jack the rear and place on stands. Get the wheels off the ground.
      2) If you have the Talons Garage catalytic shield, remove it. I do, you should.
      3) Remove the heat shield below the rear U-joint (spider) on the front shaft. 12mm
      4) The gun nozzle came off easily for me. Perhaps it is because I had excellent access to the zerks. I could spin both shafts and the heat shield wasn't in my way. Makes cleaning excess grease off easier too.
      5) Put transmission in neutral so you can spin the rear shaft.
      6) There are 6 zerks total. 3 on each shaft.

    Thank you for the video. Next time I think pump less grease in the spider joint. As soon as you start seeing the new grease coming out, just stop so you can save your grease and less mess to clean up. Also for the slide yoke, I usually pump 5 to 6 and take off the zerk (10 or 8 mm fitting), then I drive around the block making sure the shaft is freely moving. When you park the truck after your short drive, all the extra grease in the slide yoke will come out, clean any excess grease, put the zerk back on and you are good to go. A lot of people are afraid of pumping too much into the slide yoke, but if you follow the steps I mentioned you will be fine.

    • @IADHDD
      @IADHDD 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As far as using the same grease in both joints, I do that and it should be no problem as long as you use a lithium base 2.0 multipurpose. The grease I have is multipurpose and it's lithium base. I use the MobilGrease XHP 222 and it's blue. Here is a link to the Mobile grease comparison chart: www.chemcorp.co.uk/creo_files/upload/related-items/mobil_grease_guide.pdf

  • @karlkristkeitz7418
    @karlkristkeitz7418 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Just came back from the dealer today after a SECOND visit just to complete a 30K service.
    Well... it turns out even dealers don’t know how to follow the owners manual.
    While at the register following the first visit for maintenance, I asked the Toyota Service Advisor whether they lubed the propellor shaft. He said the unit is self sealed, making it unnecessary. Well, when I arrived home I looked under the car to discover zerk fittings at various point along the shaft. So, I called and spoke with the Advisor asking him why the fittings were there "if lubing wasn’t required". Furthermore, why would my owners manual say to lube the shaft at 30K? He didn’t have an answer and said he spoke with a tech and they said to bring the 4runner back.
    So today (two weeks later), I made the follow-up visit and they said the zerks were greased. So curious as to whether they really followed-through, I checked under the car when I got home. I noticed that there was very little if any black grease pushed out at some locations, and at others the seals seemed bone dry! I'm a novice to this, but should I be suspicious to think they just placed a small smear of red grease at the top of each zerk nipple just to make me think they did the job? It doesn’t even feel like they wiped the area clean.. (as I said -- some seals looked untouched and dry).
    I see in your video there are areas where you want to push out the old grease until the new appears. Am I wrong to think the novice is actually these people we trust at Toyota’s? Any follow-on thoughts to this? Are all dealerships like this??

    • @theMostUNinterestingManAlive
      @theMostUNinterestingManAlive  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have had similar experiences at both dealers and independent shops. I'm sure not every tech at the dealer is bad or ill intentioned, but I think the likelihood that you will get a good, honest tech that knows what to do is probably low. This is why I do all of my own maintenance, it's not to save money. Having said that I pumped a lot of grease through (more than necessary) to be absolutely certain everything was replaced, your dealer may have stopped at the exact amount. The only way to know for certain is to grease the shaft again and see if any dirty grease remains.

    Nice video, and cute kid! I read on a 4runner forum that the 5th gen 4runner has a total of six drive shaft zerk fittings; 3 each on the front drive shaft, and three on the rear. Apparently, each spider joint has TWO zerks, as opposed to just one. Each slide yoke has just the one zerk near the spider joint connection. I’m about to do this service, but was wondering if you knew this? Thanks again!

      To clarify, each driveshaft has two spider joints, one next to the transfer case, and one next to each differential. Each of the four spider joints has ONE zerk fitting. Then there’s the slide yokes, one for each driveshaft. Total six.

    i used brake caliper grease (high pressure/temp grease) in my slip yoke by mistake, i also pumped about 10-115 pumps (not knowing overfilling is bad)...should i be worried about the type of grease i used and overfilling it? I took the 4runner for a test drive after and everything seemed fine!

    • @theMostUNinterestingManAlive
      @theMostUNinterestingManAlive  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The slip yoke has to be able to flex as you drive since terrain and road quality fluctuates, so if you overfill it your ride will feel stiffer and you will be placing strain on the propeller shaft. Over time the grease will breakdown and reduce the pressure, just not sure how long that will take. As for the type of grease, Toyota calls for a molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease or a lithium base chasis NLGI #2 grease. If you used caliper grease, I would just check how much it holds up under constant friction. It may break down more quickly.
