Best male vocalist of all time. Glad I got to see them in concert back then.
There's really something special about this song. I used to play it over & over to TRY and sing along with Steve. He's a national treasure.
This is my number one favorite song, ever. You're right, there is something special about this song. I actually like the studio version better, however.

Steve’s voice is like liquid gold. He is known as “The Voice” for a reason. Truly a master of his craft and completely untouchable. When you hear his voice, you KNOW it’s him. You should check out Why Can’t This Night Go On Forever! From the Raised on Radio Tour. Such a beautiful melodic song and his high notes are unbelievable. Great reaction ♥️

Jonathan Cain (keyboards) is the romantic soul and Neal Schon (guitar) is the rock soul of the band.
Steve Perry is (was) simply "The Voice" (I think it was Bon Jovi who called him that).
I looked it up:
He has been dubbed "The Voice", a moniker originally coined by fellow singer Jon Bon Jovi. Queen guitarist Brian May said: "Perry is a truly luminous singer, in my opinion-a voice in a million."

If you listen to some of videos where they strip out everything but the vocal track, what Perry has in addition to his technically beautiful sound is his phrasing.
Please listen to "Still They Ride" live from Tokyo 1983. Steve was sick with the flu, but you would never know it listening to this incredible performance. This one is so incredibly pristine🎤🎶🎵
As a teenager in the early 80's, driving back and forth through town on the weekend. Living the song.
One of the great singer/guitarist combos in rock history. Schon has the guitar singing also.
Steve Perry was interviewed not long ago, & was asked about his extraordinary vocals with Journey, as well as his tracks from his solo album during the 1980's, his reply -
"Yea I know, what on earth was I thinking? I always thrived to perform my best, but those standards made it so hard to keep up with as I aged".
He has no regrets, however he did emphasize on the fact that during that time they travelled so much, & did so many shows, that he was starting to lose his passion for singing.
In his own words he stated "I lost my passion to sing & perform, I just didn't want to do it anymore".
When asked after leaving Journey if he ever caught himself singing solo & alone any of the music? he replied - "No, when I stopped performing, I stopped completely, there is no hidden

Imh that was sad, I think bands in general forget that a vocalist their instrument is their vocals, instruments outside that realm can be easily replaced, strings replaced, & retuned, a drum reskinned, a keyboard replaced, but vocals require a well trained singer, to stretch your limits, but also know when to say when, & a vocalist needs more time to fine tune their vocals,
and a part of that is keeping the passion.
When it becomes all about schedules, & making money, travelling, & ultimately losing any real social reactions, alot of lost time in ones life, the money doesn't seem all that appealing.
I played trumpet from age 9 all the way through my college years. Played professionally and was involved in so many groups and performances. I got burnt out and it stopped being fun. I quit playing and didn’t pick up a trumpet for 25 years. Now, at 48, I’m back at it. But it’s almost like starting over again.
Much like what Steve has done now. His voice is very different from where it used to be. But he enjoys singing again.
He’s practically operatic with that voice. ❤

I believe this was recorded in Philadelphia (yep, mentioned twice in the song) and originally aired over the radio during the King Biscuit Flour Hour. I remember the intro as I had recorded this onto a cassette.

I grew up in an extremely rural part of WA State so live music was hard to come by. During the summer, we spent our weekend at our lake cabin in the mountains. If atmospheric conditions were just right, I could pull in the KBFH show on Saturday night. I about lost my mind when the Journey show came on. Great memories.
For every 80's mega rock bands, there's always a lead singer/lead guitarist super duo element. They always complement each other perfectly. This has always been the case with Steve Perry and Neal Schon with Journey.

But on "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever," everyone has one of those nights. And then there's the end notes. It really shows his range. "Mother, Father" does the same, but in my opinion it comes in second.

Now you went and found a Journey song I wasn't familiar with 👍! I'm glad Neil Schoen was able to show his chops on electric guitar in this one. He is an outstanding musician, but frequently takes a back seat to The Voice.
This is from the documentary Frontiers and Beyond. It not only followed them but their 70 person strong crew. Setting out on tour, I believe the Philly show had 90,000 people. Check it out. I have a lot to suggest but not sure if you need to be a member and I have been unemployed 8 months so catching up on your channel.
This was the last song I heard before shipping out to Germany in 1986. Didn't take long to realize that the lyrics were a reflection of my future.
Aah the music of my generation rocked it hard and it shows! Steve Perry’ was the “voice” of my generation. Grateful for that and I listen often to them still and always will.

If you want a more upbeat song, (Non Ballad) I'd try "Stone In Love" " Line of Fire", "Escape" (the opening song), "Keep on Runnin" "Wheel In the Sky" "Anyway You Want It." (These are all live on the familiar 1981 Houston concert, but you may find other performances out there too. Another Excellent choice would be "Edge of the Blade" I do not think there's a "live" video for Edge of the Blade" but I highly recommend a listen! I have never been a Journey fan, for personal reasons, but I know they have a number of fans and they've put out a lot of music and as a musician I can applaud how far they've come since Feeling that way from 1978

Me and my sister were at this show at JFK stadium in Philly. The weather was extremely hot. Sammy Hagar, the Tubes, Bryan Adams and John Mellencamp opened for them.

Deen Castronovo does a great job currently, on vocals for Still They Ride. This, and others.
For video and audio that are expressly a match you could try 1981 ( July, Tokyo ). Perry had the flu ( often mentioned story ).
I think the "guitar switch" was bringing out an additional guitar which keyboardist Jon Cain plays in a later song.
I was at that concert Escape tour '81' now go listen to there older stuff,Depature, Infinity, Evolution, Escape Frontiers, Raised on Radio,and Trial by Fire, the first four will blow you mind on Steve Perry's range of notes!🤘Yea im Old school.
