My answer is simple: I find Tanabe doubling down on the direction they're taking the series to be even more infuriating than Sticker Star itself and also Tanabe is kinda a POS for essentially setting up Risa Tabata to be eaten up by fans due to that infamous Gamexplain interview.

I think Paper Mario 64 was probably the best just because of the originality. For Nintendo, there hadn't been any other game stylized like it was. The spin offs are great, but it will never match up the the magic and nostalgia of the 64 bit version. Thank you for another interesting perspective on these games! Keep up the great work!

I will give Paper Mario 64 a couple of things:
The world is probably the most cohesive out of all the Mario RPGs. Everything feels well connected and every chapter has a unique entrance.
I feel the game does a better job at pushing you towards using available resources/tactics against bosses later in the game. TTYD I feel didn't do that good of a job at pushing the player towards using any tactics and resources towards boss fights until the final boss which of course ended up being a difficulty spike to young players back then myself included.

Every "Mario RPG" had a great start, Super Mario RPG was amazing, Paper Mario (64) and Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga too. The problem with those last two is that they had only one title as good or better than the first game: Thousand Year Door and Bowser Inside Story. The rest is just passable.

I think Super Paper Mario is just as good if not better than Thousand Year Door is almost every way: story, music, characters, locations, exploration, and post game content. The gameplay is much more unique and keeps me coming back to replay it unlike the older games. People are over critical simply because it’s different.

I gave reasons why people think Super Paper Mario is just as good if not better. I played the first two games and don’t think they’re as good as hardcore fans make it out to be.

Ah yes, MAYrio, my favorite video game franchise.
I've played EVERY SINGLE PAPER MARIO GAME and Color Splash is my favorite by a landslide- Yes the toads can seem repetitive, but they all have personality. And no EXP sucks, but we get hammer scrap which is still a plus, but the battles are somewhat an experience. I truly love this game. While it has it's downs, we can't forget its ups. Take the soundtrack for example, Dark Bloo Inn just hits different... Or the dialogue. I started a new account recently and the dialogue STILL makes me laugh to this day (and that was in the first 5 minutes. ((The crate comment Toad makes, and the hamburger thing actually had me rolling. Yes, I know my humor's broken but I genuinely laughed and that made me feel better.)) This game doesn't get enough love and recognition. I stand in a similar position to this in the Mario and Luigi RPG fandom; whereas I like the second most-hated game in the franchise (Mario and Luigi: Dream Team.) I'm very biased about that game, but this one I can genuinely say is amazing, and truly mean it from the bottom of my heart.
Also, RIP Huey, he was the best Paper Mario character. He was the comedy relief, and my comfort character. Watching him sacrifice himself made me cry, and that was the first time I had ever cried at a game. It hurt so bad to see him go, so now I truly get somewhat upset when people hate on this game.

I’d say the expansions are great for bosses where more paint is heavily appreciated. I used the overworld to restore after regular battles. I’d still say it’s a C+-B- game as someone who played the original three, but I don’t think it deserves as much hate as it gets

Dude, IT SUCKS. It performs several gaming sins and I don’t know how people can even like that game. If you want an accurate representation of what it’s like to play it, check out HyperCharge’s critique video on Color Splash. He had the EXACT problems I did playing it.
I hardly had any game that made me go “F*CK THIS GAME!!!”, but Color Splash somehow pulled it off.

How people say Color Splash improves on Sticker Star is beyond my comprehension. Color Splash is, without a doubt, the worst Paper Mario game ever.
Sticker Star, I feel, can be forgotten. I don’t put handheld games alongside main titles. They’re just different. Color Splash does the same thing Sticker Star does, but even WORSE. Most of SS’s bosses are pretty straightforward fights that lightly use the Thing stickers (with exception of Bowser) and CS goes ALL OUT with that concept. It’s frustrating to lose a boss fight because of seeing something coming at you and when you solve the “puzzle”, it’s not rewarding at all.
The battle system SUCKS in CS. In SS, at LEAST you can perform attacks quicker with simple button presses. CS has you scroll through all your cards, select your cards, tap to paint the cards and flick the cards and THEN you perform button presses.
And the writing isn’t that good for CS. TTYD had some clever and endearing writing while CS goes for the “LOL RANDOM” humor that plagues the internet.

I agree with those points but i think the variety and creativity in the levels can compensate them as it exceeds any other paper mario game in my opinion (just think to the parallel world, the smb3 styled level, the fight with a piece of meat, the haunted mansion). I still prefer ttyd and spm btw but they had some really frustrating moments during the story like the General White chase, the gems farming in the merlee house and the block sequence in the land of cragnons where you also have to write please many times
I know I'm late, but you forgot to mention probably the best part about this game in my opinion. The dialogue! It was very funny to me and there are good moments in the progression. The gameplay works great, and there are some funny battles. The washing machine, anyone?

There’s only two ways I can see that happening
1. Add experience points so that it would give us a reason to engage in battle and use our stickers/cards.
OR
2. Scrap the RPG battle system entirely and just have the enemies act similarly to the paper mache soldiers (or like how the enemies are in Super Paper Mario)

@@supernstic.7777 I didn't say Color Splash was as bad as Sticker Star just that its battle system is still bad.
I think they should improve the formula from origami king, maybe give more moves than required for puzzle, meaning use of paper mechanics (if they theme it around glue, maybe you can glue in a way that will save it but too few or wrong pattern lead to death. Would be cool to have boomerang that attack the back half and hurl hammer should be the hammer for air attacks instead of just a fancier jump. Bring back the hammer scrap as glue bottle fragments, they can also be found in overworld. Stars that is given by defeating bosses for increasing your stat and can change dynamically for even more strategy. A making system for weapons would be cool too instead of buying. You can either buy material using coins or do certain things like hammering rock, hammering trees to fall or defeating the enemies, there is also paper part for you grab and glue. More interesting costume but I agree that there shouldn’t be too much original one-use character and focus on recycling rare ones.
yea that’s not gonna happen they said they completely get rid of the system after that game entirely and as someone who is a newer fan on certain series even i wanted an evolution of that formula just like if i was an older fan like i am with paper mario and the fact that they get rid of the battle system every time is absurd as even though i’m a newer fan in certain series even i always want an evolution of that formula and the fact that paper mario doesn’t even do this since ttyd is just sad 😢
Color splash is just a slightly better version of Sticker Star. Problem is, Sticker Star was so terrible that "slightly better" is not nearly enough of an improvement. People who claim to like this game say that they enjoy it for it's "humor", forget that you still have to play the game to get to that humor. I'm tired of being polite and optimistic about the new era of Paper Mario. The 3 newer games fucking suck, don't play them. Yes that includes Origami King as well. It still has practically every problem introduced by Sticker Star while having an even worse battle system then SS and Color Splash. "But they added partners back again," no they didn't. One generic bob-omb who does not effect the battle system in the slightest and a napkin folded into a hand puppet does not count as "partners." They do not do anything. Nintendo somehow managed to drive both of their Mario RPG series into the ground in the span of a few (5? 10? 15? what is time anymore) years. Mario and Luigi no longer exist because Nintendo tried to sell a remake of a game that was already available on the console at the same time as a mainline Mario game came out, causing Alphadream to head into bankruptcy. Paper might as well be dead in the water because of how little of an improvement there has been regarding the games themselves.
It's been more then 10 years since the atrocity that was Sticker Star came out and Paper Mario still hasn't fully recovered from the terrible decision making involved in that game.

My reason for disliking Color Splash: The battle system was too much like Sticker Star.
The absolute worst part of the battle system in both games was the inability to select which enemy you're hitting with your attacks. It's just picked for you and it's not just the front guy for your second move.
Now I can forgive Sticker Star's battle system for being experimental, since it came out first, and emphasizing the sticker motif by making the battle all about the collection you bring in to situations. Not to mention it was fun to get enemy attacks and turn those back on them. The page selection was actually pretty convenient in sticker star as well when you could hold 15 moves per page in 3x5 rows and fits the sticker motif. And while I can forgive the system for being new I didn't want it repeated...
Color Splash has every problem in Sticker Star without any justification of 'trying something new' or a motif that makes sense the just rehashed Sticker Star's system in a less convenient way and didn't even fix the most basic problem.

It's not just a sticker star sequel. It has some genuinely cool levels, with unique ideas, the music and style are better in my opinion and there are a few funny characters, even if they are just toads wearing outfits.
@@WorstEvil. I have played both and I say Sticker Star is easily better. I'll admit they're both subpar. I'm looking at gameplay more than anything. Everything you're talking about is flavor. And if you like Color Splash more, fine, but I have my opinion too.
To be fair, the levels of Color Splash are flavor-wise are decent and more memorable, though most of the gameplay itself through these levels is identical to sticker star (which I found normal quality): just romp around with a low jump hammering whatever you need to, apply some trick to place realistic props on the map when prompted, and get to the exit star block. The color gimmick is so clearly just tacked on, both in and out of levels, compared to the sticker gimmicks which meshes better than the color gimmicks with the game play, what's going on, and why things are the way they are. I found some of the humor in Color Splash needlessly annoying, especially any run-on jokes they had and the visual humor from having everything be extra-papery wasn't original anymore. Music? I don't recall music being bad in either and Bowser round 1 ost of Sticker Star is pretty good, but I don't recall any music from Color Splash aside from the regular battle theme. The battle system and use of the color gimmick are incredibly lazy. The card system is what it is because the elements are a complete rehash of the sticker system but without any reason and far more inefficient. I want to apply strategy to battles. Sticker Star has more of that since you have to manage a relatively small, but very manageable supply of stickers. Also you can just buy super props like fans off an easy roulette for about all random battles in Color Splash. Coins being particularly more useful since you need them to act twice, which is good to save for bosses, and extra stickers in often quick fights were at least more of a reason to get in fights in Sticker Star.
Also my run of them was beat the games. I'm not really going for extra stuff or looking to talk to everyone. Color Splash to me overstays its welcome with its length and even more so than Sticker Star. Sticker Star is also portable and short so I could beat it in an evening. I don't usually sit around chatting with npcs. With Sticker Star I played it more than once to try to optimize playing through it. With Color Splash I just was glad to be done with it.

@@WorstEvil. Nah the boss battles in Color Splash are a immediate step down. Why force upon figuring out a boss weakness when Sticker Star didn't even do that and at most had a misleading "You used too many stickers" message when you didn't beat the boss the "right way". And why do the Koopalings have an instant death attack if you don't use the weakness? It kinda takes me out of it when they could've started the boss fight with said instant death attack. I cannot stand when a game is treating me like an idiot and that's exactly what Color Splash does.
Also "funny writing" shouldn't be a selling point especially meta humor which I know the current Paper Mario games have been doing. I'm so tired of bland, lazzily manufactured meta humor that the 2010's has been plagued with. Nothing sets my distaste faster than self referencing things like a toad sarcastically saying how Peach being kidnapped is surprising or them referencing the "Luigi Death Stare" meme.

But ignoring that for now can you tell me how other things about sticker star are better than color splash? The World for an example, at least color splash has unique areas and the world feels connected, i personally wouldn't say the same for sticker star...OK I'm really getting bored of writing this, it just gets kind of tiring arguing about which game is better or worse but I would love to hear your opinions of the game if you feel like saying them
This game is considered the worst by these people, because it made an experimental failure that was Sticker Star (which was a total chaos of development that Nintendo stubbornly forced to completion) a mainstay. Though it is objectively better than Sticker Star. Worse, it caused the Paper Mario fanbase schism. Kids/young people who never played the original trilogy played Color Splash first, and see it as their Paper Mario. So, when new games get released, the fanbase is always divided. Always those who prefer a cartoon-esque SMRPG-like, and those who prefer an arts/crafts-styled explorer game with battles as an occasional side thing.
That's not the games fault, thats a problem with the community.
this game is my childhood and ive always wanted a port to the switch so bad. im very sad that people hate it even though it has a banger soundtrack. the only reason why people hate it is because others say they hate it making them believing that its bad and hate on it for no reason. this game is literally the best game ive ever played and no one can stop me. come on guys, show some respect. and come on, stop hating on EVERY new title if it's not like TTYD or 64. i mean, imagine if EVERY title in the series was something like TTYD. the battle system would get repetitive and there would be no concept at all. i get it, it may not be as cool as the others, but come on, this was on a poor selling console along with other bangers like mario kart 8. just, please. stop hating on it.

Color Splash even thought I didn’t beat it it is still a Paper Mario Game that I enjoy even with its flaws (don’t get me wrong they still kinda bother me) but I still enjoy the game a lot is it my top favorites? Nope Origami King and 64 are my favorites but it would be still a rank below those 2

New games, old games, it's basically guaranteed that for any casual gamer, the first game they play in the series, they'll like the most. Even more likely if they were a kid when they played it, as nostalgia takes over.
I think even the dumbest of casual gamer, if they played the old PM games and compare them to the new ones, most will probably tell you the latter are trash and couldn't believe they enjoyed them
@@nobodyinparticular9640 Even though I personally agree Paper Mario should never have deviated from the TTYD formula (though some small changes would be welcome to keep things fresh), plenty have played the old ones and enjoy the new ones. Not just out of new age nostalgia.
Side note, I think the greatest travesty is Paper Jam, as it not only doubled down on the sterile new Paper Mario, but corrupted the Mario & Luigi series as well.

Nope, Color Splash didn't kill Paper Mario. Just because Nintendo doesn't want to listen to a bunch of thirsty teenagers on their knees begging for Thousand Times Easier than a normal rpg doesn't mean the series is dead. It's by far the best game. It's hard, has good graphics, an interesting story, enaging gameplay, and loads of replayability. It has its flaws, but its worth a second chance.
In all honesty, the first and second ones aren't even that creative.

Origami King is (in my opinion) way worse. I could be misunderstanding the game, but Color Splash is fine. It has some funny moments, its soundtrack is great, and I personally like the battle system. I honestly think the game deserves a Switch port, with a battle system that other people like.
