    Dodging and Burning is one of the most powerful technique in photo editing. If you can dodge and burn correctly your photos will stand out more than you can ever imagine. Some of the best editors in the world use Dodging and Burning as their primary technique.
    Including the great Ansel Adams. He was widely known for dodging and burning his images. Of course he did it the old fashion way with film, and literal burning.
    In this video I show you how to quickly dodge and burn your image in Lightroom using the new masking technique Adobe just released. This Lightroom Update 2021 made this technique faster and more accurate than ever!

    Just found your video and wow, thanks. I normally edit in ACR then over to Photoshop for D&B. This is brilliant and saves me having to take that extra step. Something not mentioned is that you can use a low flow brush to subtract the effect in certain areas - making it all the more 'editable'. Yet another technique that save my having to pop backwards and forwards between ACR and Photoshop.

    • @willsimpsonphoto

      this is an awesome tip for this technique. The "Flow" always throws me a little so I avoid it... lol. I really need to use it more.

      @@willsimpsonphoto Thanks Will. I have just been experimenting since watching your video. Once the D&B masks have been established I use a very low flow brush to modify/delete the D&B areas where it is too much or not required. Almost like D&B in reverse! I was struggling with D&B in the new ACR but you have opened up a whole world of possibilities.

      @@willsimpsonphoto that’s awesome! You have great content including Lr mobile that I use sometimes. Do you typically D&B in Lr at the Raw level or do it Ps assuming your workflow involves the latter?

    • @willsimpsonphoto
      @willsimpsonphoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@aviatorman8 it really depends on the photo. If I’m doing some more intense dodge and burn I’ll do it in photoshop, for say a print that I put in the gallery. If it’s just more light editing or can get away with it, I’ll do it in Lightroom.

    Thanks for interesting video! I'm relatively new to the concept "dodge and burn", is it not quite similar to simply adding more contrast using say the s-curve? One difference I notice though is that if I dodge and burn using this method, saturation doesn't seem to increase, which is does if I play with the pure contrast tools

    • @willsimpsonphoto
      @willsimpsonphoto  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      you're correct on the saturation, because it's effecting the luminance rather than saturation. The reason its more effective than adjusting the Curve is because the curve (in LR) is a global adjustment, meaning it adjusts everything in the image of the range you're adjusting. Dodging and burning allows you to pick only the spots you want to lighten or darken thus giving your image a unique pop. Its a local adjustment that if used well can make images pop!

I was like stunned / surreal vibes for a few moments quickly followed by... now that's pretty cool and I got a the classic Will Simpson throw to camera re the Bacon. Exactly Phil. Though not in a good way, for me. I’m an enthusiast with knowledge about technically what I want to do, but without the time that Photoshop requires (I can only presume Photoshop users universally are childless. Otherwise, there’s no way to justify all the time you’re giving to Adobe programs instead of them). Lightroom HAD been a terrific middle ground between inadequate amateur programs and full Photoshop. To me, it seemed that Lightroom was for advanced amateurs or high volume busy professionals who can’t spend one hour per photo to make the shading on a doorknob look perfect. Now, it’s as convoluted and indecipherable as Photoshop. And if you childless people have that kind of time, great. The rest of us need our straightforward efficient Lightroom back. Or…use one of the many alternatives available now.

    Sorry for another comment, but….who, seriously thought this was an improvement over selecting brush, then dodge or burn, then selecting the amount? It’s INSANE. The feature, for me, has effectively removed simple dodge and burn from Lightroom. Maybe a deal breaker and time to explore alternatives. Am I missing a way to make this as straightforward as it was???

    • @willsimpsonphoto
      @willsimpsonphoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely send all this info to Adobe, they work on user statements and suggestions so maybe they’ll change it back, but who knows. There is another way, here’s the video on that one.

  • @scottwallace1
    @scottwallace1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is an improvement over clicking 'dodge' or 'burn' and adjusting what we wanted with a brush? Now we need to set up luminance masks, relabel them, try and figure out what range we want, which is a guessing game....just.....did a Windows 10 VP get promoted at Adobe's Lightroom crew? What a piece of crap.

    • @willsimpsonphoto
      @willsimpsonphoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol so you’re not a fan of the updated masking system? Or just the dodge and burn method?

    • @scottwallace1
      @scottwallace1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@willsimpsonphoto if I knew what was really the equivalent of dodging and burning, I could answer that. Dodging and burning being a completely different thing than a global exposure adjustment. Do I need to research the luminance range for what I want to brighten or darken to approximate what was soooo simple before? It’s just ridiculous. Your video is great and I appreciate the work. My annoyance is squarely aimed at Adobe.

    • @willsimpsonphoto
      @willsimpsonphoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scottwallace1 totally get it. Adobe could probably figure out a way to make dodging and burning super simple but we just have to work with what we got. The luminance slider is simply relative to the darks and lights. You don’t have to be super specific, if you want to darken the darks, just move the slider over to the left and to lighten lights, move to right. Doesn’t have to be perfect and the. Simply feather it until it looks good. That’s the easiest method, otherwise we’d go nuts trying to make it perfect 😅

    • @scottwallace1
      @scottwallace1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@willsimpsonphoto I am starting to get that. It’s simply astounding to me that a core feature that was sooo simple before is now this convoluted Photoshop-style science project. I keep thinking I must just not be seeing it and some tutorial will show the way. But nope. It’s really now a poindexter nerd alert geek squad tin foil hat feature for the too much free time on their hands crowd. Again, appreciate you Will. Super pissed at Adobe.

    • @scottwallace1
      @scottwallace1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And it’s probably obvious by now, but dodge and burn was easily my most used editing tool. I prefer natural light and in the moment photos of my family to posed stuff. And as such, the ability to easily lighten faces and reduce the impact of shadows on faces was miraculous to me. And that is now a considerably more complicated process than before. The select subject select sky thing. That’s great. Love that. But effing effs sake, they need to address this, in my clearly not so humble opinion.
