    Kansai Japanese
    Native to: Japan
    Region: Kansai
    Language family: Japonic
    The Kansai dialect (関西弁, Kansai-ben, also known as Kansai hōgen (関西方言)) is a group of Japanese dialects in the Kansai region (Kinki region) of Japan. In Japanese, Kansai-ben is the common name and it is called Kinki dialect (近畿方言, Kinki hōgen) in technical terms. The dialects of Kyoto and Osaka, especially in the Edo period, are also called Kamigata dialect (上方言葉, Kamigata kotoba, or Kamigata-go (上方語)). The Kansai dialect is typified by the speech of Osaka, the major city of Kansai, which is referred to specifically as Osaka-ben. It is characterized as being both more melodic and harsher by speakers of the standard language.
    Since Osaka is the largest city in the region and its speakers gained the most media exposure over the last century, non-Kansai-dialect speakers tend to associate the dialect of Osaka with the entire Kansai region. However, technically, Kansai dialect is not a single dialect but a group of related dialects in the region. Each major city and prefecture has a particular dialect, and residents take some pride in their particular dialectal variations.
    The common Kansai dialect is spoken in Keihanshin (the metropolitan areas of the cities of Kyoto, Osaka and Kobe) and its surroundings, a radius of about 50 km (31 mi) around the Osaka-Kyoto area (see regional differences).[3] In this article, it is mainly discussed about the Keihanshin version of Kansai dialect in Shōwa period and Heisei period.
    Dialects of other areas have different features, some archaic, from the common Kansai dialect. Tajima and Tango (except Maizuru) dialects in northwest Kansai are too different to be regarded as Kansai dialect and are thus usually included in the Chūgoku dialect. Dialects spoken in Southeastern Kii Peninsula including Totsukawa and Owase are also far different from other Kansai dialects, and considered a language island. The Shikoku dialect and the Hokuriku dialect share many similarities with the Kansai dialects, but are classified separately.

      he pronounced it a bit over the top to be honest. Kansai Ben isn't tonal, however the pitch is different. I can speak Osaka Ben, Kyoto Ben a bit, as well as Standard Japanese :) Its not that hard to learn if you know standard Japanese as most comedians are from Osaka and the Kansai area. Kyoto Ben is "posh" ( I think the speaker is from Kyoto). Osaka Ben is more friendly sounding.

    Hello, I'm from Japan.🇯🇵
    Thank you for making this video !
    The Kansai dialect is grouped together as a dialect of the Kansai region.
    But in fact, it has different intonations or words depending on the region like Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo and so on.
    So, some people call it individually like Kyoto-ben(dialect), Osaka-ben(dialect), Hyogo-ben(dialect) and so on.
    This video seems to introduce Kyoto-ben. All intonations are attractive.

    • @ruysig3193
      @ruysig3193 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It must be pointed out that the boundaries between these dialects are becoming blurred due to cross-border commuting.
      Since you can travel between Kyoto and Osaka in 30 minutes, and between Osaka and Kobe in 20 minutes, it is inevitable that languages will intermingle.

      Those are not tones, those markings above the letters are a sign of elongating vowel sounds. Like, "a" and "ā", the difference is, "ā" is longer than "a".

    • @saiyajedi
      @saiyajedi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      @@ThisIsAlmondz I think they’re referring to the wider tonal range of the dialect compared to Standard Japanese (I’ve heard it described as “singsongy” or “petulant-sounding”). Some linguists do posit a separate “falling tone” (for single-mora words traditionally analyzed as “elongated” with a HL sequence) that would make it a true tonal language rather than just having a pitch accent.

      Negative in Kyoto: Arahen
      Negative in Osaka: Arehen
      Polite in Kyoto: Iwahara

    Why does this sound like a Tokyo guy trying real hard to sound Osakan? 🥹😂
    Haru is "polite" Kansai speech. The "sa" row tends to becomes an aspiration at the end of words. Hence "~masen" becomes "~maHEN." "Haru" is a contraction of "nasaru." (Nasaru → naharu →'haru) 🤓
