One thing I should've articulated in the video is just how weirdly confrontational and bro-y Sean comes across as. It seems like the original tone of the show was to throw off the guest not just with the hot wings, but also hotter questions and some interviewer attitude. This act seems like a conscientious choice on Sean's part. He's not a ballbuster, but he has to play up the punishing heat. The show gets a lot better when they move away from that. I now see the current Hot Ones as a good cop/bad cop routine. Sean is your friendly interviewer (the good cop), but the wings (the bad cop) are still out to get you. That combination works a lot better.
@@FoolishBaileyOnce they revamped the show to that, they definitely got a lot more A-listers on now that the premise was “if you survive the bad cop, you get to promo whatever you’re working on”
An in-depth breakdown of an 8 and a half year old boring interview with Anthony Rizzo, is the exact off-season baseball content that I am subscribed for.
If anyone questions why FB knows so much about what white baseball players think of Will Ferrell just remember this man was a relief pitcher for the 1915 Kansas City Packers
Some baseball players are just like this all the time. Sean was a rookie, yes, but this is just Anthony Rizzo. Alot of baseball players, including elites like *cough* Trout *cough*, aren't very that expressive or charismatic off the plate, if they are charismatic on the plate at all. If you can gather ANYTHING from the monotony post game interviews, its that most baseball players interviews won't be that different. That's why big personalities on the field are so appreciated and popular.
The first half is like a fan offered Rizzo a plate of wings and Rizzo was hungry and took him up on it but he felt obligated to sit and eat with the fan
Current Sean is honestly one of the best interviewers I've seen in a long time. Idk what season that transformation happened or if it was too slow to notice, but with a few seasons under his belt he really came into his own. It would be worth running a few of these early guests back just to get a picture of his growth... But maybe not Rizzo.
Since Sean is a fellow Sox fan I've campaigned a few times to get TA on Hot Ones, but given how the past year has gone for him I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon
if I were TA I would stay out of the spotlight for a while, lol. The guys has had some really good seasons, especially offensively. Seems like he is his own worst enemy. Nice thing about baseball is you can always have a redemption arc. Manny Machado, for example, has matured a lot. I hope he humbles himself and has a bounce back! Maybe an out-of-nowhere renaissance season like Votto had in 2019.
It reminds me of that Simpsons episode when Mr. Burns takes over all the TV networks and he has that sitcom. Smithers asks him "you're home already?" and Mr. Burns punchline is "yes."
THANK you. I’ve always thought this interview stood out so massively since I started watching Hot Ones all those years ago, and was the worst of the early interviews. But I love that it exists, because it shows people how much work and growth it can take to develop in your field, and it’s okay to not be the best at the start (such as Sean).
If I had to pick a current MLB player, get Shohei Ohtani and his interpreter on there, double the wings, double the action, double the stories. If I had to pick a Legacy player on there, Big Papi, baby!!! As an Orioles fan, it takes one heck of a personality to get me to respect/like a Red Sox player, but what's not to love about Big Papi? Big personality, great laugh, I think he'd be a great interview.
The next baseball Hot Ones guest should be Jose Abreu, so Sean can hold him responsible for his crimes in 2023. I get that he's 36, but an 87 OPS+ first baseman qualifies as a humanitarian crisis. Sean could ask hard hitting questions about whether the World Bank or NATO are considering intervening or what Jim Crane's secret is for fielding the most consistently unlikeable team in baseball.
I want to see the true psycho, Max Scherzer. Either that or someone retired who we've already seen to be a fun, funny, good sport in the media like Johnny Damon or Matt Adams.
I think a Lars Nootbaar interview would crush, but is Lars enough of a star to have on? He doesn’t have the track record of a Freeman, Betts, or Kershaw, but he has the personality
Ichiro Suzuki is the second baseball player interviewed on Hot Ones Shohei Ohtani shocks everyone by signing a contract with First We Feast and replacing Sean Evans as the show's leading man
Mookie Betts is vegan so they might need to get some vegan wings to have him on lol. I agree with the sentiment though, he'd be a perfect fit for the show
Thanks for the breakdown, Bailey. I would have loved to see you delve deeper into the spice environment at the time, so we could maybe get a conclusive Scoville+ number.
For some reason Willy Adames just screamed next baseball hot ones participate, he’s fun, got a ton of personality, plays for a fun brewers team, and seems like the type that would be able to stick with the heat.
hes not asking very open ended questions like he does now. left field bleachers or right field doesnt give enough to elaborate on and rizzo will just answer the question. If you ask "whats the best thing and worst thing a fan has ever yelled at you?" its more open and more the type of question sean asks now.
In their defense it’s one of the first hot ones episodes ever. Even Sean has said before he didn’t like his own approach of interviewing in the first couple episodes. He was going for a more mean interviewing style. I think Rizzo should go back again.
wait is this actually the only MLB hot ones episode im genuinely suprised even if there are like 3 marketable athletes in the whole sport that's crazy when they have 300 episodes
These are good suggestions but the fact nobody has mentioned Gerrit Cole is crazy. He's just crazy enough to appeal to non baseball fans when he inevitably starts going on tangents about spin rate and pitch selection
Bartolo Colon, although not a big household name such as someone like Mookie, Shohei, Trout, Judge, etc. has the potential to be the greatest baseball hot ones interview of all time. It's not a very high bar to clear, but theres many quirks in Bartolo's personal life and baseball career that'd make for a really interesting interview, especially since Colon is inherently charismatic
What if you made a spin off about baseball with the tagline being 'Hot questions and even hotter swings' and you just ask guys about their swing mechanic and stance changes over their career?
I remember when I first started watching the show, about 2018, and going back to season one to see that one of my at the time heroes from my beloved Cubs had been on at the beginning. I clicked very fast and watched the entire thing but we basically learned nothing from the Rizzo interview and I didn't watch any other season one episodes, lol.
From now on I'll always laugh when I se that graphic of the wings being tossed because now it can only stand for the premature cut to end to an awkward pause
Scherzer might be interesting. He usually puts some effort into explaining things during interviews. You still might have to slow it down to watch it though lol
Freddie Freeman! Dude is a 100% the most genuine and humble dude ever. Braves fan here, but even though he plays for the Dodgers now....he is still my favorite active player
I saw that you posted this, so I was like "i should go watch the interview first". But then I got through the first 2 questions and was like "never mind" . Had to come back and just watch your video, original was too cringey.
I have a feeling if the show ran back another Rizzo interview we’d see some next level character development
I’d hope Rizzo comes in with a grudge because of the White Sox jersey stunt
Fully agree
This is exactly what the baseball world has been searching for
A collab between you two could be fun
"that makes Rizzo the first non-G-unit member and yet the second Tony....." made me laugh so hard
I watch FB for his delivery alone... He makes such mundane sentences so fucking funny
This is honestly inspiring to see how bad of an interviewer Sean Evans was as first, considering now he's one of the best interviewers in the game

But nowadays Rizzo looks to be much more fun and relaxed to the media than at that point. It’s not like amateur meteorologist Mike Trout.
That Will Ferrell question lit a fire under Sean Evans from that point forward. He looked shocked
The first half is like a fan offered Rizzo a plate of wings and Rizzo was hungry and took him up on it but he felt obligated to sit and eat with the fan
Get Zack Greinke on Hot Ones! Sean would get flustered by the hilariously awkward energy.
