I recently found the channel and love it. Haha I’m the random guy liking multiple videos... I’m building a 1,000 sqft garage rock gym. I’m confused on what order I should do paint (taping off and adding design), bond all edges and cracks for smooth finishes, and texture all of it.. Should I add a texture like you have on every single plywood piece or just on the volumes? Is the clear coat all I would need? So it would be... 1. T-Nut plywood 2. Hang all walls 3. Bond the edges (sand them of course) 4. Tape off and paint (deck paint or regular? I wouldn’t mind using deck paint for quality but color choices are limited) 5. Finish with the clear coat sealer (is that grippy enough if I don’t texture?) I’m more looking into saving money by DIY of course but I’d rather do it the right way first and have it turn out great! Thank you for your help and the channel!! I will be buying some of the items from your links - Casey A. Saint George, UT
I'm still perfecting my own technique to texture. This is what I do now... -Smooth joints -Primer paint -spread texture (sand) -Latex paint, 2 coats -High quality clear coat I think it would be cool to have spots on the Wall that have no texture, I think thats a design preference more than anything. Spinners might be more of an issue in those areas. Thanks for your support!
It's not really about what looks best in video, it's about the finished, usability of the volume at a good cost. I've found the Rustoleam garage floor clear coat to be just as effective if not a little better.
Jay, I just use regular house paint, whatever I have extra from other projects. The clear coat is were the "rubber meets the road" or in this case Volume :)
I juuuuuust started building volumes a couple of weeks ago. I appreciate this video because it's motivated me to use the shaker screen. It looks way better. My current issue is with the holes for the t nuts. So many of the holes I drill end up with really badly gauged edges. Is this just a problem with the type of bit I'm using? I've had to fix so many hole edges that I'm wondering if there is an obvious fix for smoothing the edges better. Thanks!
Honestly, I just use whatever I have laying around. Marine grade paint seems to work well. I typically put a clear coat polyurethane over the top and you'll need to chalk the back of the holds to protect the paint.
hi , how's the sand holding up? I'm just about to paint my panels for an outdoor wall, i'm going with Primer first then paint with sand and possibly another coat over the sand. Was wondering if its worth it.
hi.i,am climbing coach from Georgia and I do climbing volumes by myself ,but I do not know how to cover surface. what material I must use, is it sand or what? can you say me name of this material? thank you very much for help.
Best stuff would be a 2 part epoxy paint made for marine decks. It's expensive. I'm constantly looking for a better product but haven't found one yet. For the texture I use sifted play sand or pool filter sand, also sifted to pull out the big stuff.
Climber Dad Cool Vid. Can you suggest a 2 part epoxy? Everything I see is for cars or clear coats with high gloss for like wood tables tops. Also what sort of sand are you using?
@@SuperBigVanilla Thanks. I have been looking into some different 2 part epoxy paints but haven't used any yet. When I find some that works good that isn't crazy expensive I'll certainly share it.
3/4" Baltic Birtch is perferred but I usually use 3/4" hardwood plywood from Home Depot because its a little less money and much easier for me to get. The 7 ply cabinet grade pine has worked well for me although its a little on the soft side.
Yes, holding up real well. The trick is to get a fine gain sand and several layers of paint to lock it in. Large grains will slough off (like climbing on soft sandstone).
How slip resistant is the clear coat? I'm thinking of trying it for use on a warped wall (as seen on ninja warrior) to give it a little extra grip/slip resistant. Good idea or should I look at other options?
Well... If you're going with the latex base paint any colour you want. There are some other paints that are better suited for the application that are more limited on colour and more expensive.
Best paint to use is a 2 part epoxy paint. Worst paint is a Latex paint covered with a clear coat for wood flooring (this video). Not great but it works and usually the cheapest route.
@climberdad thank u so much for your kind reply. I was wondering what should I use to create texture? Also should I use polyurethane (PU) paint? I do have a supplier of that in my country
th-cam.com/users/shortstS6yk3Ffe78?feature=share Can you get epoxy paint or a hard acrylic paint? PU paint will work, you'll need to make sure to chalk or wax the back of your holds.
I screen out the large grains. They do sell a pre screened silica sand but it's crazy expensive where I live. Maybe you can Get some pre screened stuff.
@@climberdad I'm thinking maybe that's what the issue was and I didn't put enough coverage to level it all with sand. How do you find it with your sand and coverage is it pretty close to climbing gym wall?
@@climberdad I saw your trapezoid volume video what were the measurements and what angle did you set the circular saw to (sides and bottom). Information said to follow link to Facebook but I couldn't find the angles. Thanks
Hi, just wanted to say I really appreciate the videos you've made on home wall construction, they've helped immensely! I'm currently building an outdoor climbing wall on the side of my house (under an eve, to offer more protection from weathering and whatnot). I've heard horror stories of climbing holds sticking to the paint and tearing it off the wall/volume. For an outdoor wall, would the polyurethane finish prevent this sticking issue? Also, would acrylic or acrylic latex paint work for the base of the wall/volume? Thank you, Justin
Thanx for all of these explanations ! very cool !
This channel is brilliant. Thanks
Oh wow, that's realy cool.
Thanks man, going to try this myself.
Great. Let me know how it works for you.

The second paint is applying when the first coat has dried or you just paint it right away? I made some volumes but the sand didn't stick very well.
Wait for it to dry
do you wait that the first paint is dry before putting the second layer on the top of the sand and what is the paint used
Yes and I use whatever paint I have laying around, usually water based latex paint. If you are looking for performance use a 2 part epoxy paint.
@@climberdad thanks for the response
Can you send us some ingredients of the two-component epoxy resin used?

good bit and a few layers of masking tape should fix that up
Hi Im really appreciate of your work. What kind of paintball you used. Matted, enamel?

Will sanding the ply with rough sandpaper work as a cheaper and easier alternative to achieve a similar texture?
I use an 80 grit that seems to be a good balance but if you go any rougher I would worry about splinters. Wood holds polish down over time anyways.
@@climberdad thanks for the advice
What the name of the sand grit material for the friction ?
I used sifted play sand. Pool filter sand is very similar.
please, can you explain me what kinde of sand do you use...what MM? tant you
I used sifted play sand. Not sure what the profile/size would be.
Hi! Good job man!!! how is the diameter of the sand? 0,1-0,2mm? many thanks
It's play sand that I've screened myself and don't have a size for you. I would call it medium to fine.
hi , how's the sand holding up? I'm just about to paint my panels for an outdoor wall, i'm going with Primer first then paint with sand and possibly another coat over the sand. Was wondering if its worth it.
I would recommend and least 2 coats over the sand. Also if you can get a fine silica sand that would be much easier than sifting play sand.
@@climberdad Thanks! Your videos have been very helpful.
@@climberdad ops another question , after drilling my holes should i paint first installing tnuts?
I prefer to paint very last, after the t-nuts have been installed unless it's a volume.
@@climberdad I prefer to install the t-nuts last, if you get paint on the inside thread it's a pain to clean out.

what type of sand you use?
Sifted play sand or pool sand.

We chalk the back of our holds to help this from happening with new walls.

Latex paint for the base although I think a good 2 part epoxy paint would be much better.

normal paint? :)
Yes. Only issue is the urethane holds tend to stick to it. Slap a little chalk on the back of them before you bolt them on and problem solved

Can’t you just add the sand in the paint?
Yes, but the texture turns out different
