I just wanted your video as I have a Heatmiser wireless stat system with 5 zones (3 stats) of UFH and 1 for rads and hot water. My control box looks very similar, but I have an antenna for wireless stats (all 4 of them). However, after reading some wireless range / interference issues with Nest's mesh wifi where the stats talk to the heat links, I am having 2nd thoughts as this is one of the problems I have with Heatmiser - control unit seems to call heat to UFH/rads whenever it feels like - even in summer (where I have to turn off CH on the boiler to stop getting cooked)! When I opened a ticket with Heatmiser, they said stats are too far from control unit. I proved it wasn't the case as even if i put the stat on top of the control unit 2" from antenna - it was still playing up. Spent a lot of money on system that doesn't work well at all (wish I had run wiring!).
Great video. Thanks. I was thinking of getting something like this. Not sure if this would work for us through. We have a three bed semi-detached. We use two of the bedrooms as offices during the day and need to heat them during the day in the winter. We don't really heat the other bedroom (better sleep if you keep your bedroom cool). During the day when we are working upstairs we shut off the radiators downstairs. In the evening we turn off the radiators in the two bedroom/offices and turn on the radiators downstairs in the living/dining room. The circuit is already at temp so the room warms up pretty quick. We have no room thermostat anywhere in the house and the rad's all have TRVs. I'd like to fit something like a Nest in the living/dining room so we can set an actual celsius temperature for the room, but if we are going to the trouble of doing that then maybe we should get something that can turn the rad's on and off room by room. At the moment we just turn the TRVs for whatever room we are using from off to the setting we know is comfortable for us, usually about 2-3... Seems like if we ditch the TRV's for the room that the Nest thermostat is in we still have to manually turn rad's in the rest of the house on and off (which would still be fine of course). I think Charlie DIYte did something on this as well. I'll check there as well. I think the system he went for effectively has thermostats for each room, effectively equivalent to every room having it's own room one of those lovely Nest ones. Individual thermostats for each room would probably be an ideal set up for us as we are now both working at home all day and it would make it possible to be disciplined about temperature settings and keeping the bills under control. Would be interested in your thoughts if you are still checking comments on this vid, or from anyone else for that matter.
wireless thermostatic valves i think would be what you need, have a look at a system where you can have radiator valves that pair to an app and you can turn them on and off or set when they are to go on and off.
Even when it's freezing inside the home - the small number (which I believe is known as the ambient temperature) on the Nest Thermostat always stays at 22.5 degrees. Do these Nest thermostat really sense the current temperature of the room they are in as I don't think they do which means I have to manually turn the heat on all the time. What's the point of having this if it can't turn on manually when temperature of the room falls below a certain level because it just keeps showing 22.5 degree C all the time. This came preinstalled with the new build home - do you think there is something wrong with its installation
Hi I am struggling to find a solution on how I can install nest which would work on my system. I have the following. 50KW boiler connected to- 1) valve to send hot water to the underfloor heating 2) valve to send hot water to the joule unvented cylinder. The valves are opened via a two channel timer for hot water and heating, with timers set for when the boiler is fired. I’m not bothered about using nest for the hot water, just the UFH. The UFH is controlled by 3 manifolds each with approx 6 actuators on. Approx 20 actuators in total all linking to approx 10 danfoss thermostats. The issue I have is that yes I can replace the thermostats with the nest solution which when on demand for heat will open the actuators for hot water, however as the hot water from the boiler is only turned on by the 2 channel timer, it will only come on if the boiler is set to be on permanently. Is there a way that when the new thermostat calls for heat and opens the actuator on the manifold it can request the boiler to be turned on? I’m guessing the two way channel timer will need changing but what too? Really struggling with this, any help would be appreciated
Hi. Tell me if the valve controllers are a far distance away from the respective room stat how do they communicate. Let’s presume the home has full coverage WiFi, do the individual nest component communicate via WiFi over the home network or do the respective components need to be within range of each other?
Loved this vid. Is it possible to walk mount the thermostat on the wall without an existing wire from an old thermostat. And without having to run the wire back to the link? Possible to wire direct into plug socket or safe to channel the USB cable into the wall?
Top video as always! I've used lots of your videos for so many plumbing jobs I've done around my own home, but you'd never done a Nest install until now. That's why I ended up doing a small series of videos of my own on how to install and use the Nest. Let me know what you think. Hold tight!
I really like your video and nest thermostat I wonder if u could help me decide ? Ive heard nest doesnt wrk so great with vaillant boiler - parently they cant wrk as a learning thermostat ?!? Help please
So does the nest thermostat on the wall need to be powered through the other panel? Or is there a way to regulate the wattage without getting a wired feed from the panel near the boiler? Any help?
Hi James, I have a nest gen 3, with a vokera boiler, and I also have solar panels on the roof that heat my hot water. My issue is obviously this time of year the panels aren’t really heating my hot water and I currently have the hot water setting on my nest set to off which is resulting in me having no hot water on really cold days. What’s best for me to do have the setting set to on at this time of year or set schedules? And then back in the summer months turn it back to off and let the panels do the work again? Hope you can help. Cheers
Can you let me know what the make and model of the junction box was that you were wiring the three heat links to? I assume that box is where you wire your thermal store and boiler also?
Hi, I have underfloor heating and my gen2 nest only turns on heat from the boiler but the pump that should move that water stays off. The pump only turns on when I use manual mode by pressing the button on the heatlink. Cam anyone help on how to fix this ?
I have a volt free combi boiler that’s wired to a nest thermostat heatlink to terminals 2 and 3 for volt free switching but I’m asking anyone who knows if it’s possible to use the 5 and 6 terminals that has the live link to make them 240v and still keep 2 and 3 volt free. It’s just that I’ve added ufh and need switched power for the pump. I haven’t installed a zone valve as I only want one stat. Is this possible without blowing the unit?
hi james, just wondering if you know whether or not the nest would work with an electric underfloor heating mat? I know its not plumbing but thought you might know.
I installed my Nest 'stat last week and the heatlink took 0.75mm ferrules no problem. The 12v terminals on the base can take ferrules too but you might need to snip 1-2mm off to have them sitting flush.
We got kombi boiler, unvented hot water tank. Programmer and two thermostats downstairs for two underfloor heating zones. On second floor we got programmer which controls heating on second and first floors which are heated by radiators. We bought nest for upstairs but installer today told me that he can't install it as heating wiring needs to be changed. House is 2 years old. I'm not plumber/electrician but I find it difficult to believe I need that sort of work just to install Nest. He was Nest Pro with no reviews on Nest site. Any thoughts?

I'm away, or confortably in the sofa doing my configs instead of infinite minutes staring to a circle. Bah.
Turn down the filler music!!!
If you’re a plumber don’t install nest! Employing electrician who is a proper professional and who should be doing the job. Not a plumber! Keep to your pipes mate and leave the technical work to us electricians!
jay r something wrong with the excellent install here then? All signed off and still running fine. Better than many electricians I know...and more reliable!
plumberparts
As we don’t see any of your wiring close up difficult for me to comment on it. I’ve been an electrician for 20 years and also an engineering tutor I generally find plumbers very poor at any electrical work. As you carry out the work presumably you are part p registered? Which means you should be on the Internet on the competent person to register? Are you? And if it has been signed off why as it would need to signed off by person carrying out the work!!And if it wasn’t it shouldn’t have been signed off!
jay r what a sad sad man you seem to be
jay r you sound like a pathetic little man who’s upset because he can’t get any work. Little do you know it’s probably down to your shit attitude and workmanship. People can learn and be trained in multiple trades you know, you aren’t the only electrician on the planet buddy 😂
£219 each? No thanks!
