  • In this episode, we show you what we have been up to since our Pan-Pan and rescue tow into A Coruna, Spain. We have settled into Spanish life, taken to the local town and made the marina home as we are a little stranded here…
We recently sailed 400nm from the UK and made our way across the English Channel and the Bay of Biscay.
Following our dramatic rescue, we set to work diagnosing the problems with help from our friend, Guy (thank you Guy!). We also resolved the water intake issue we had sailing across the Bay of Biscay, and got a brand new exhaust pipe. We tried not to flood the boat in the process of removing the old one!
Wil we ever fix our sailboat and can we leave A Coruna? Watch to find out!

If you don't mind a bit of advice (anytime one is trying to slip a hose over a seacock end) - don't use a lubricant if the end is below the waterline! Even if well clamped, there is a chance of the hose slipping back off if it is bent into shape and there is any pressure pulling it outwards or sideways. Heat the end of the hose in boiling water to soften it - or use a heat gun if you have 120 volt power available. A little saliva spread around the inside of the heated hose just before you install it usually helps too. At least, that is what they taught us in boatbuilding school 40 years ago! I hope the transmission linkage solves the squeaky problem and best of luck on your continuing voyage.

Advice is always welcome here! We are still learning and very grateful for any tips and experiences shared. Thank you for this, this is sound advice and will be put into practice 🙌🏼

I agree but at least the washing up liquid he used is a better choice than an oil or silicone based lube. It will become less slippery over time as it dries out with the exhaust heat.

Hi Guys, another great video, beautiful skies and more engine problems 😢 poor you, not had much luck with that engine!!
My first thought was water pump or alternator screech but not sure if you have them on your engine! And I’m sure by this time you already know what it is!!
You both look well and like you are enjoying life!
    Great to watch

Probably the alternator belt slipping after starting with the starter motor needs strong charge ... worth thinking about if it happens again

I watch a few of the sailing videos. You guys do a great job. We gotta get your subscribers up. Target 500k. Some that are at that level aren’t as “real” as your channel. Keep it up and good things will happen.

To my car engine experience, that screeching sound you had on way into port sounded remarkably like the alternator bearings, or possibly water pump bearings, definitely something driven off the main belt. Could be wrong, just sounds similar.

Thanks for the comment! You know you might not be far from the issues here… We’ve recently had some trouble with the alternator not charging the batteries, or at least we think it isn’t (very recent issue)… Need to get in there and do some checks. But if it has failed, this could actually be where all the trouble has come from🤔
Not super sure if the gearbox was the issue or not, just made the adjustments and couldn’t replicate the screeching noise, so hoped for the best.

To check, just loosen belt and remove from pulley, and check if there is any play in the bearing by trying to move pulley side to side, if there is it can lead to failure of alternator.

How did you end with Indiana in your sailing tittle? We have no ocean here!❤

I would securely tie the boat off at the dock, run the engine and put the engine in gear and watch and listen. This is normal practice but you have to insure you are securely tied off in reverse and forward. Then sit and wait.

A Coruna has a huge nice bay, certainly take it for a long spin around the bay once fully warmed up. Fingers crossed or its a gearbox out job. Bit surprised by the amount of movement up and down on the gearbox selector shaft though.

Yes there’s lots of space for a play around. We’ve not been able to replicate the issue still, so just hoping we’ve fixed it… But yes, we were surprised about the play in the governor. You can also hear that ‘clunk’ when we got into gear (forwards only), not sure if that means the cable is not great or another issue?🤔

    Check gearbox oil ?
