    They're all good lessons, we're all learning vicariously from you. I got towed into the Yealm last year after getting water into the tank through the vent after sailing hard to windward. The harbour team were real gents which helped take the edge off what was scary and a tad humiliating.
    Thanks for the videos, we're all gunning for you both.

      Yeah it definitely shook us up and made us realise how much we’ve still got to learn☹️ But we’re safe and the boat is too, so that’s the main thing!

    It's always a good choice if made for reasons of safety! I hope the repair is not expensive and turns out to be something simple.

      Thanks so much, it was a tough call for us and one we’ve thought a lot about since… but it comes down to safety and making the call before things get any worse.
      We’ll give some more details on the next episode🙏🏼

      The pilot books give you a real uneasy feeling around there… Plus there’s lots of rocks one side and lots of tankers the other😬 No our favourite sail…

    Glad that you all got in safe and sound, hope that its something fairly simple that wont hold you up for to long. Love your channel and take alot from your videos, look forward to the next video to see how you got on. :)

      Thanks so much for the comment🙏🏼 We’re glad we made it into A Coruna, just a bit of a confidence knock… but we’re still learning how to be sailors, so it’s all down to experience!
      Working on the next episode now🙌🏼

    Wise decisions. Hope that you can find and fix the problem, and that the cost wasn't too depressing. I'm guessing close to shore is a huge saving on a tow?
    If you're both glass-half-full-and-put-it-down-to experience people...then everything's looking OK. Safe and secure is the best place to be. Onwards & Upwards or 'Adelante y hacia arriba'

    • @SailingIndiana
      @SailingIndiana  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much🙏🏼 It’s a gearbox issue, so we think something to do with the cone clutch… might need a rebuild.
      The tow is priced per mile we think, so not cheap even at 10miles out😬
      It took a little while, but we’ve got back in the saddle now and put it down to experience! We sail on🙌🏼

  • @montanadan2524
    @montanadan2524 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would have made the same call. Running aground and getting a tow all part of the experience. Fair winds.

    • @SailingIndiana
      @SailingIndiana  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s played on our minds for while, always thinking of what we could have done differently… but at the end of the day, we got back safe, the boat is safe, so that’s all that matters

    Wonder how the old sailors did it before motors ?

    • @SailingIndiana
      @SailingIndiana  ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of them would get embayed crossing Biscay, one of the reasons it is so notorious. With the Lee shore along that stretch, most would end up on the rocks if they got into trouble.

    • @RHP9898
      @RHP9898 ปีที่แล้ว

      They would have sailed out of it, keeping well away from the rocks. Modern sailors don't have the skill sets.

    • @dhouse-d5l
      @dhouse-d5l 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They sailed much further out. then would have sailed into port. Today we sail way too close to lee shores because we think the motor will save us. And harbours now are full of marinas....

      @@SailingIndiana Phew, we don't yet know what is actually wrong, but it could have been a £800 for a new bearing, shaft and lift out. So yes good call and not the conditions to take a swim to investigate either.
      Its a long way across Biscay, well done for managing that. The rest of the voyage to Gib will be easier, short hops hopefully. Don't rush though, some lovely stopping off points on route.

    Not sure why Sailors don't install an 'Emergency-Outboard-Mount' on the Stern- but I HAVE ONE in the event my inboard Bukh Diesel fails and I need to use the Honda Long Shaft outboard.., CHEAPER than a tow!

      You have a great sailing boat, you need to get more confidence in sailing it in different conditions. Sure you could have sailed into a bay near the port and dropped anchor. Use the dinghy, or if you had to, get a tow from there. Save a bit of cash, and learn more skills. You won’t always have the benefit of a rescue boat nearby.
      That said, you are out there, so good on you, and erring for safety is not to be dissed.

    • @ryder6070

      @@markthomasson5077 You can't tell someone to "sail into a bay and drop anchor" unless you are literally looking at the chart... and the weather and the tides and know the ground tackle......too many assumptions AHAB 3.5 hp will not push this boat into a headwind or any current at all. This is fantasy, you should know this...... What if they were dangerously low on Cannabis or hot chocolate? Impossible to anchor in such conditions. Crazy man. How many miles have you sailed this season...rhetorical. Younger generations of savages are taking over the old timers traditions and refining outdated techniques. Haters will always exist. Also debating replacing the engine or rebuilding again… if we can afford it somehow.

    • @eddieohearn17
      @eddieohearn17 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SailingIndiana it is more likely that a replacement will serve you better and likely be cheaper. I have seen rebuilds cost 3 times the replacement cost but this was a very old engine and we advised the boat owner not to rebuild because parts would be impossible to find but he made the choice. You might also if a rebuilt engine replacement. Occasionally a yard will replace an engine and rebuild to old engine for sale later this might get you a slight discount in the overall price. Take care and I hope to see you sailing this spring.
