We Try to Get Two Barn Find 1968 Imperial's Running And Get One Stuck In Our Backyard!

  • In this video we attempt to get the two Imperial's we got last week running. The green coupe starts right up and we do burn outs! So easy to do a burn out in this one. Jamie from Dead Dodge Garage then decided to test drive it and gets it stuck in our field trying to do a power slide! Was NOT easy to get it unstuck. We also try to get the 1968 Imperial convertible running but run into a bunch of issues so it will have to be another video. Some very cool options and quirks on both of these Imperials we had no idea even existed.

    Thanks Tom! Love that you are resurrecting these... I believe the Sentinel system was a automatic dimmer (Hi to Lo and back to Hi beams when driving on the highway). Not sure but it MIGHT have included a headlight delay as well...

    Those cars were the among the ultimate machines of their time. Everyone would pause in admiration when they were seen. The old Town & Country wagons had interiors full of more goodies than you could even use on a short trip.

    1968 Imperial Safeguard Sentinel was a (optional) fancy headlight dimmer system. 1968 might be my favorite overall year for ANYTHING Mopar. Think about all the amazing cars from 1968 - including this Imperial. Love it!

    I think it's important to preserve these Imperials, because many of them have met their fate in demolition derbies - a victim of their own success. Anyway, these are both very cool cars. I just like all the unique pieces these had, for example the square side marker lights vs. the round ones that all other 68 Mopars had. And, the exterior door handles are unique as well. Just some cool stuff from a bygone era.

    Sentinel is a photo sensitive switch to turn the lights on at dusk and off at dawn. At least it is on Caddy's. I'm sure it's the same thing with a different manufacturer specific name

    The sentinel is a headlight dimmer. If you have the high beams on, it will dim them when someone approaches from the other direction. The delay adjusts the distance that triggers to change them to low beam.

    Hey, I have a 1967 New Yorker with the sentinal switch. When it's activated, it turns the lights on a dusk, or when you drive into a dark garage etc...that doodad on the dash in front of the driver is the sensor, I seem to remember you adjust the sensitivity by turning the top, it regulates the amount of light that goes in (I had the adjustable cap when I got the car, but it disappeared years ago).
    I get that exhast leak for the first minute after I start the car. Piston #6's compression is way down at 70psi...and it runs rough. Gonna pull the heads off to see what's going on, might be simple, or I might be embarking an a mystical journey. Considering getting the valve seats hardened when I have it apart. Is that something people actually do, or do they go the lead substitute route, or neither? Already have the exhaust manifold studs. Not sure if they changed the classificaion of the Imperials when they went unibody in '67 (as in is it a C body?), but it's real cool to see some full size Mopars on your channel...cheers from eastern Ontario.

    • @rocketresto
      @rocketresto  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Think it’s technically a D body, definitely not a c body but they share a lot of dna. Low compression is usually either rings and a burnt valve, which would be from lack of lead. Good idea to harden valve seats if you have the heads off.

    • @66skate
      @66skate 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rocketresto The D body (full frame) ended in 66. Third generation (1967-1968) Imperial styling was completely new for the 1967 and 1968 models. Using a two-inch shorter wheelbase, Imperial switched from the body-on-frame platform (D-body) to a unibody platform (C-body platform used in other full-size Mopars.)

    • @66skate
      @66skate 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ericruud9328 Yes, the 81-83. In 1967, Imperial finally moved from body-and-frame to unit-body construction, sharing its chassis with Chrysler's unit-bodies; its small production had not merited the investment in unit-body construction, given the life of the tools and dies. Some believe the Imperial was a Y body during its unit-body years, but evidence suggests that it was never officially a Y-body until the 1981 series.

    2 👍‘s up for showcasing 2 1968 Imperials plus a YT channel sub & bell click …
    …2 very lucky survivor 1968 Imperials that despite now being 56 years old & having endured all that came along during those 56 years are still largely intact & original …
    …That 1968 Imperial Crown Convertible is one of only 474 made in 1968 which was also the last year Imperial convertibles were factory produced & offered by ChryCorp…This is a nicely factory optioned Imperial Crown Convertible with Tilt -Telescope Steering Column that was sourced from GM by ChryCorp …Sentinel, Auto-Pilot and Auto Headlight Dimming are all nice “luxury car” features when found on any 1960’s era American luxury car …The 1967 - 1968 Imperials tho not as notable in pedigree & legacy as the 1964 - 1966 Imperials still had more singular / exclusive to 67 - 68 Imperial only styling and well appointed / crafted / detailed interiors that following years of 1969 thru 1975 Imperials did not have / would not equal …
    …This 1968 Crown convertible has standard power windows but not the available / optional power vent wings…having factory A/C was a high prestige option on any 1960’s convertible…This 1968 Crown convertible has the optional & still uncommonly seen in 1968 AM - FM radio which if also a factory FM Stereo unit would have been a high $$ 1968 Imperial option…
    Nice exterior / interior color combination on this 1968 Imperial Crown convertible…
    …In the way of comparison the first year with FWD 1967 Cadillac Eldorado had a production run of between 17,000 - 18,000 while the 1967 Imperial Crown Convertible had a total production run of only 577…For 1968 Imperial Crown convertible production would be / was 103 fewer with the total number of 1968 Crown convertibles being made @ only 474 …
    …Extremely rare then by Detroit standards were Imperial Crown convertibles when new and after 56 years any well preserved & conserved pristine example of a 1968 Imperial convertible is now a beyond rare special interest / collector car…
    …Any not pristine but somewhat still nice & original 1968 Imperial Crown convertible with as installed original 440 V-8 & factory correct drivetrain #’s, with a OK body & interior that could be & become a possible / viable restoration candidate?? …Scarce.
    …The dark green 1968 Crown Coupe evidently has a notable / interesting history…
    ..1968 Crown Coupes were also a very rare car model when compared to late 1960’s Detroit luxury car factory production number standards…Compared to 1968 Cadillac Coupe de Ville luxury car sales numbers the sales total of only 2,656 Imperial Crown Coupes being produced for 1968 model year was not a big number…Imperials truly were “ boutique luxury cars”…
    …With any remaining survivor 1968 Imperials now 56 year old Imperials here in 2024 there are not many still around whether in preserved pristine factory original condition, barn find / found Imperials or discovered parked / sitting in the weeds in derelict or rotted out condition…
    …The real & tragic bane of / for all 1960’s era Imperials however was / has been & ruefully still some 50+ years after the 1960’s is being found & taken to end up being gutted out & stripped of interiors & set up for demolition derby competition where rare & becoming more rarer still Imperial sheet metal panels, bumpers & specific to Imperial chrome trim & miscellaneous component bits & pieces are heedlessly smashed & trashed as another Imperial ends up being wrecked & destroyed in demolition derby competition …TH-cam has lots of vids that show this being done over & over to & with 1960’s era Imperial Crowns & the much more rarer still Imperial LeBaron sedan models …Why? …What for? …So some Demolition Derby “ driver” can prove how Imperials were / are tough Demo Derby Champs …Doing so to 1960’s era Imperials during the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s sadly was just the odds of met final fates but to still be doing so to 1960’s era Imperial Crowns & LeBarons after the years 2000, 2010 and 2020 has now become “Imperials in demolition derby” do it again & again ignorant repetition …
