Its a good idea but be extra careful when buying from local pick up, most of the stolen bikes are being sold on eBay like that way so they can't track the thief specially when using a fake account and sell you the bike on the street or any public location, always ask for a bill or something to make sure he she is the right owner.
I actually built my entire road bike with parts I ordered from eBay. Not only do you figure out what your bike is worth, but you know how it works down to each little component. I keep a record of how much I spend to how much it would cost retail, I spent maybe $600/$700 total, and had a shop offer me $2500 for it. That's why I typically recommend building your own bike, it CAN be cheaper (not saying it always is), and its something completely unique to you
Cool! People do need to be aware of costs and value. I have seen people wanting to upgrade Walmart bikes. Ack! Start with a good base bike. Be aware of spending more money than the bike is worth.
Also, I have done a local pickup thinking it would be cheaper for a cutlery set, but because im in NYS, the tax I was charged was about the same as the shipping would've been. Only difference is, I saved maybe $2 and I got it right away lol
Great info, I had a seller that found the actual shipping fee higher than listed on auction ($75) and decided to deliver it personally from Tampa to South Florida, this was for a 1972 Chrome Paramount, won auction at $805 including shipping.
A Cannondale is one bike on my list to do, great find. My heart races in the last few seconds of an eBay sale. With you all the way here with your method thanks for sharing all the best Andy
Yeah, I get jacked up at the end of an ebay auction too. Are Cannondales very common there? These older ones were USA made. Not sure if the newer ones all are. This particular bike is strange. It's a 1984. Fromt he catalog it looks like Cannondale sold either the frame set, or the bike. Maybe they bought the frameset and built up. The extension lever brakes are wrong. The rear wheel had a 5 speed freewheel on it. A 6/7 speed freewheel won't fit. But the hub spacing is 126mm. Maybe they took a 5 speed wheel and spaced it to 126mm (and redished it). Or rebuilt the hub, changing the spacers around so less spacers on the drive side, and then redished the wheel? Strange stuff. And there was a SRAM X-4 rear derailleur on there. Weirdness!
We have Cannondale's but I don't think they are as common place as in the U.S. I've just picked up a TREK that's all over the show with components and wheels etc. Its also missing a water bottle rivet so found myself watching another one of your videos last night, helpful so thanks for that. I love the fact that all these bikes have a past and the reward is unraveling and putting right the problems, very rewarding.
I like Treks. I have several of them. The oldest is from 1980. Only a 412. I keep an eye out for something from the late 70's (they only started in 1976). Maybe a racing bike. The Cannondale in this video is from 1984. They only started making bikes in 83. So the serial # starts with BB for the second year. The first year started with AA. What is the Trek you picked up?
Interesting stuff, its a yellow 1000. I felt I needed to kirb it a little as some of these recent builds are escalating and its always good to go back to basics.
Using this site, you can looking up what year it is, and more info about it: www.vintage-trek.com Looks like the 2000 was yellow. Also the 86 was a yellow/white fade.
Some sellers prefer buyers who pick the item up instead of shipping and may even accept a lower price, it's quite common in germany, some sellers even sell pickup only
IMO shipping should be something that is done electronically based on service and area. Way too many a$$holes charge insane amounts for shipping just to make more profit. It should be part of ebay software that determines the shipping costs. If someone wants more because of time to package etc, they should add it to the cost of the item.
Driving 150 miles would add $30-50 in gas round trip, so there's that to consider. Also one of my tires costs more than $27. People should just donate things at some point.
Bought a Malvern star on eBay a few days ago with full Shimano 600 arabesque groupset for $33. Frame was crappy and repainted, cheap wheels but still a great deal
I don't think it's any surprise that the person selling the tandem bike wants it pick up only as the thing doesn't fit in any normal commercial bike box.
I mean they kinda do.. I've not had one that big yet, but I got a Honda CRF50 all original £20, sold for £150. I also got a YX140 big wheel for £90, sold for £300. I got a BRM go-kart with a WTP100 engine, Alfono Pro, 2 sets of wheels with Dunlop tyres dry/wet and a track-trolley - for £250, sold for £800... If you haven't ever got a good deal that's your problem, maybe you should try and be a bit smarter with your money.👍🏻😂
I just bought a Technium 420 tonight for $50. & followed RJ's advice for a local pickup (180m round trip) so avoided a $85. Ship fee.( I work up there anyway) Btw: Local pickup wasn't an option until I asked. Ive been shopping for them for awhile, I've recently seen eBay Technium priced anywhere from $50 to $600 (scott tinley) Good luck.
How much did it cost you in gasoline to pick up locally? What is your time worth to you? If these two variables come close to the shipping cost of the item, the game changes.
In the case of the $27 Cannondale, it only cost me $16 in gas to drive round trip to Syracuse. And I drive about an hour a day roundtrip for work everyday. So a two hour roundtrip to pickup a bike I want is nothing. And I combined that trip with doing other stuff.
An experienced seller wouldn't use genuine shipping prices so they can charge you more. Or they add the shipping into the item price and offer "free shipping".
This is more of a good timing/watching kind of thing. Gainesville Florida eBay today - first page average price $2000. Including some $200 Walmart bikes. It’s all luck.
Reinis Miks hi, i personally find bikes for 10 Euro or 20 Euro, yes it needs maintenance new chain etc, i always find such deals on used Ebay, properly their owners just want to get rid of them for many reasons such as no place for them, i live in Germany though.
Hmm I got it to work with the advanced search. Just doesn't appear under the drop down menu. No biggy I guess :). Thanks so much for sharing this video! I had no idea there was such a search option.
You have to factor that in. I am guessing I spent less than $15 n gas to pick this bike up. But then did other stuff while I was over in that area. So it didn't matter much to me.
I’m enjoying the bike so far th-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.
So you are saying if you get a good deal on a bike on eBay, it's stolen? So if you pay a lot for a bike on eBay, then it's not stolen? Or are you saying every bike on eBay is stolen?

I don’t care if it’s a stolen bike if I don’t know it’s a stolen bike
so your advice is to never buy a used bike?
Do you WANNA get hurt? Df type of sense of authority would you have to have over another person to ask that of them?

I found a vintage peugeot road bike that I think is a 1978. I got it for $20 off a buy sell app. I plan to fix it up and sell it for $100-$200
whats the app?
Also, I have done a local pickup thinking it would be cheaper for a cutlery set, but because im in NYS, the tax I was charged was about the same as the shipping would've been. Only difference is, I saved maybe $2 and I got it right away lol

Never knew I could search ebay like this. Thanks. I'm not to far from Syracuse either 👍
Good info. I never have used Ebay before, so this was enlightening.

It didn't cost me anywhere near $30-50 to drive there and back. $30 would work out to about 13mpg and my car get ways better than that, thanks.
Very helpful! applicable not just for bikes, but anything else!
Bought a Malvern star on eBay a few days ago with full Shimano 600 arabesque groupset for $33. Frame was crappy and repainted, cheap wheels but still a great deal
Nice!
it really works well, I found a 30$ bmx frame
I don't think it's any surprise that the person selling the tandem bike wants it pick up only as the thing doesn't fit in any normal commercial bike box.
would cost an arm and a leg to ship it
Great video! I've picked up a few bikes using these kind of methods.
RJ, how you store your bikes?
Ratikkakuski Kuski I
Great video, very helpful.
Another great video..... thanks 👍👏😃

Thanks for you video! Very good info
Great video, great advice as always!

Your comment makes it seem as though such things never happen. They do...regularly.

Bullshit
I have an '86 raleigh technium 440. Absolutely great shape. How much should I put it for on eBay. 200? 150?
Are you near me? $10!
RJ The Bike Guy haha!!

Good find. I always look for deals like those.
Thank you for sharing this tip
I always am checking items ending soonest. I've sniped a few good bargains in the last few minutes.
got a 97 gary fisher marlin in that nice green color best bike ive had so far im 15
as a cash only person, I have never had a credit card or a pay pal account, I stick with Craigslist. how do you think that compares to eBay?
I use both. th-cam.com/video/zHolb86fCAM/w-d-xo.html
Very helpful!
Thanks!
An experienced seller wouldn't use genuine shipping prices so they can charge you more. Or they add the shipping into the item price and offer "free shipping".
I saw a nice mountain bike sell for $1 with a shipping of around $175. The seller never responded to my email about local pickup.
ebay cracked down a lot on those type of misleading listings and made it officially against their terms and conditions.
Good Job
This is more of a good timing/watching kind of thing. Gainesville Florida eBay today - first page average price $2000. Including some $200 Walmart bikes. It’s all luck.
It's not luck. It's persistence. You said today. But that is not tomorrow, or next week, or next month. You have constantly watch.
some people are just generous or stupid. 27 bucks? My tire alone cost more than that.
Reinis Miks hi, i personally find bikes for 10 Euro or 20 Euro, yes it needs maintenance new chain etc, i always find such deals on used Ebay, properly their owners just want to get rid of them for many reasons such as no place for them, i live in Germany though.
Damn. one man's trash is another man's treasure
dun this a lot but there was always local buyers bidding too,, even local secound hand bike dealers
Great share. I don't know why but I don't have the option to sort by "Distance: nearest first". Any idea why? I'm in Israel but use USA ebay.
Maybe because you are in Israel? Just a guess...
Hmm I got it to work with the advanced search. Just doesn't appear under the drop down menu. No biggy I guess :). Thanks so much for sharing this video! I had no idea there was such a search option.
Lol
RJ The Bike Guy TH-cam Channel Tee Shirt can we find these on ebay??
They are only on Amazon: www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B074VNZLYK/ref=nosim/youtube25-20
No cables were hurt im the making of the video
what about the price of the petrol or diesel
You have to factor that in. I am guessing I spent less than $15 n gas to pick this bike up. But then did other stuff while I was over in that area. So it didn't matter much to me.
soooo, basically, just go on craigslist.
Here are strategies for finding deals on Craigslist: th-cam.com/video/zHolb86fCAM/w-d-xo.html
You should re build a 9t bmx rear cassette
So the tl;dr of this video is: Sort listings by distance and pick it up locally.

Hello fellow cny'er
Actually Western NY. But close enough.
I always find ebay bike prices to be high. Not a lot of bargains.
i got a maruishi rx-6 better than that bike that was a fixer upper for $10 at a garage sale
I stay away from eBay
How To find Incredible Bike Bargains, AKA HOW TO BUY STOLEN BIKES FROM THIEVES..
So you are saying if you get a good deal on a bike on eBay, it's stolen? So if you pay a lot for a bike on eBay, then it's not stolen? Or are you saying every bike on eBay is stolen?
I'm saying that buying a Cannondale bike for $27 is quite fishy, that bike probably got stolen..
CHNGE Probably! That's the key word isn't it! Why make such a blanket statement when you really have no idea?
Nardwaur ?
First at 25 seconds!
Hi
Took u 4 mins to say pickup locally.
Pushyhog == oh shut up n enjoy
