Thank you, Mazzy. The first album is my favorite as well. I saw Led Zeppelin (when I was just 16) on June 21, 1969 at the Colston Hall, Bristol, England. Their support act were the Liverpool Scene … quite a contrast in style! Zeppelin were truly amazing; the concert had more “ impact” on me than any other concert I have ever been to since. As a side note, the concert hall was only about a quarter full!

Hi Maz, I’m a subscriber to your channel. I enjoy your honesty & eclectic interesting take on music art & dare I say life. I know that what I’m about to say might just throw some over the rails buttttt… Led Zeppelin game changed music in the 70’s in similar (not necessarily esthetically ) way that The Beatles did in the 60’s. Each of them more or less ‘owned’ their respective decades. Each band has endured throughout time. There, I said it! Whew! Keep on doing what you do! ✌🏻

Nobody mentions them or know about them , because they were very short lived in the late 60's with only 4 albums ( Have them all now) ! I've seen a few clips on TH-cam and fell in love with their Psychedelic R&B vibe ! I thought I had everything in music I could ever want till , I found this diamond in the rough for me., and I knew about Brian Auger's Oblivion Express my whole life , from the 70's !❤❤👈😻

I was born July 22, 1954 in San Francisco California quite similar to you Norman going to Fillmore west,Winterland, Golden Gate Park, Oakland Coliseum, Berkeley community. first time I saw Led Zeppelin was in Oakland Coliseum indoors, and they were touring on Led Zeppelin three. The second time I saw them was at Berkeley community theater. I had second row seats. It was really hot in like September but it was a Led Zeppelin for Tour. Then then I was kind of a jazz snob so I didn’t go to Kezar. although I used to work at Kezar, my family had a hotdog stand. I did see Grateful Dead, Waylon Jennings, and New Riders at Kezar a week before Zeppelin. Unfortunat fortunately, I’ve got to see Led Zeppelin perform the Physical Graffiti tour. I was up in Vancouver skiing and I went and saw them play in Vancouver the best show of all three. thanks for sharing.
Hi Mazzi years ago in London, I work for Mercari we sold Led Zeppelin some PA system I went to set it all up for them to come and listen to guess what yeah they never turned up they said we’ll have it said that never been a great Zepplin fan but thanks for your feed on them I’m in the UK living in Sheffield at the minute but there was great days for me. I would suggest that Physical Graffiti is the band's most diverse album not the debut in which i agree with Martin Popoff it sounds old (or maybe better stated that it is of it's time). Still each to their own.
I became a Zeppelin fan when I was 14 years old in 1977. My love for the band grew each year as I waited for a new album and a tour of the US! The new album, "In Through the Out Door," was released on December 7th, 1979. The cover art (Designed by Hipgnosis) had seven views (A through G) of a scene in a bar. The tour would not happen due to the passing of drummer John Bonham. I was sad and heartbroken, to say the least. This album is also my least favorite in their catalog; I have yet to reach for it in over 20 years, and now it's just there to complete it.
Hi Mazzy - Led Zep would definitely be in my top 10 of all time. Favourite album - hmmm that's difficult. Off the top - maybe their 3rd album, which wasn't particularly well received following Led Zep II - but I just loved their acoustic stuff. Saw them live, "in the evening" - can ya dig it lolol. I have huge memories of that show, especially their acoustic set - and despite some negative stuff on his guitar playing - Jimmy WAS a great guitar player. the first I heard of this band was in the form of a rectangular promotional flyer that someone slipped through the vents in all the outside lockers at my high school . it had a line drawing of a rose and announced the band was playing at the rose palace, a big warehouse with indoor outdoor synthetic carpet grass that changed it into a concert hall, the carpet even ran up and covered the stage, in a continuous covering. it was like the last day of school with everybody throwing away all these various colored craft papers from their lockers. I asked my beatlemaniac friend who read all the English rock press if he had heard of the band, and he said he had kind of heard of them, they were supposed to be pretty good. although I thought it odd to have just one band on the bill, I went and enjoyed the show, which had appealingly clever stagecraft , for what was essentially a warehouse with a box on the floor for a stage. Aside from page spinning around in a kind of Chinese magician silk get up with colored silk that flashed in the light to accent his musical statements, the primary sound system was in the form of two big onstage cabinets that intentionally looked like two giant home stereo speakers , one on each side of the stage , angled in a bit, with walnut looking sides and a typical tweed front cloth, which plant, at one point in the show , climbed up on top of in a call and response to the guitar, creating the effect of a miniature band in a land of the giants movie. that was before the days of super loud rock shows. I also wanted to say I appreciated not being called stupid right off the bat. I skip all of the posts that start with " it's the music, stupid".

Like you, Led Zeppelin aren't in my top ten list of favourite bands but I did have a sizeable vinyl collection. I sold it all off about 15 years ago and replaced it with the Japanese mini-lp CD versions when they were released (the amazing thing about them is that they did brilliant replicas of the original albums right down to the spinning wheel on Led Zep III). I talked with Bob Ludwig a few years ago and and he told me that he still has the original test pressing for his (RL) cut of Led Zep II. He jokingly said it was his retirement but he may have been right. Can't imagine what that might be worth today.
Great video. My late wife and I were at the Sept 71 Led Zeppelin Berkeley show. It was awesome, they played songs from their forthcoming album, IV. I felt so high from their concert, had to eat before driving back across the bridge to SF.

A bit younger than you Mazzy. Just too young for Knebworth. I got to assist setting up the lighting rig for the last tour rehearsals. Hardest day’s work in my life hoisting lights and watching Bonzo’s drum tech polish his kit. Never saw the band. Saw a few of the Page and Plant appearances. Then my lottery win, tickets for the O2 reunion. Amazing gig, felt like a teenager again.😊

you may well like Rober Plant's secret hometown band, Saving Grace. A rather delicious return to rootsy English folk and dusty Americana and beautifully played too. There are clips online. Who knows if they will ever formally release music but the lucky audiences who dine on their music absolutely love them! Other information on request!

LZ is one of my top five or so favorite rock bands, but I certainly have no trouble understanding why other people wouldn't rate them so high; whereas with the Beatles, my second favorite band (after the Dead), I find it harder to imagine how someone who likes the Beatles (as most people I know do) wouldn't put that in their list of top few bands or so, given the range, brilliance, influence, and the like of that band's work.
It's simply amazing to me how many different versions of 8 studio albums have been produced, almost like a bunch of soups but with the same ingredients.
I was trying to remember what the deal was with the "Jimmy Page" reissues of the original albums with the silver "hologram stickers" on the back. I had a couple of those and, although Led Zeppelin records were never particularly well-recorded, I remember them sounding notably "meh." It order to punch them up a little, I'd use a vintage '70s receiver and turn on the LOUDNESS control.
Enjoyed your walk down memory lane Zep gig wise. Never got to see them, which I kind of regret. Was offered a ticket for LZ at Knebworth '79 but chose to see some obscure punk band at an even more obscure pub, then spent the rest of the night at the Speakeasy in London. However, Led Zeppelin are still a top ten band for me as their dynamics, their sonic plays on lights and shades keep them interesting. My go to albums are Physical Graffiti and the first three tracks (and No Quarter) on LZ V. Got all the "Classic" reissues as they came out cause I wanted clean copies, didn't play them for a long time. Only to appreciate their production values once I did(!)
jimmy page as a guitarist was at his best from 69-72 imo. would have been great if you saw them in that time. from 73 onward led zeppelin became a stadium band. still fantastic but not as intimate and jaw dropping as the early shows. 77 is an awesome year. jimmy was very sloppy on this tour but still had tons of chops. any recollection of the 45min performances of no quarter? those are my fav. also love ten years gone from that tour as well as kashmir and achilles last stand.
I really don’t recall it being 45 minutes, but it was long and beautiful. I remember the wonderful piano parts and jimmy’s guitar and it felt almost spiritual jazz like at times. 🎹🎸

I’m with you on Led Zeppelin’s first album, that’s my favorite also. The one album that doesn’t get much attention is Coda. It’s worth checking the Coda deluxe set out for the extra bonus tracks. It has the best bonus tracks out of all the deluxe sets in my opinion. I saw many concerts in the seventies like you but I never got to see Zeppelin. I remember when they played at Madison Square Garden in 1973, I couldn’t get tickets. ✌️
It’s expensive but that zep 1 classic records 200 gram reissue is off the charts, sounds incredible…their best zep release imho. In through out door had 6 different covers
OK I am ready for this !!! That Yardbrids '68 is fantastic, the end of the Yardbirds before the restructure and name change great set. I think you meant me that bought the LZII RL copy which sounds great and "eye thank you". With the acoustic feel of LZIII and the music you like I can see why that ranks high on your list with LZI. Love the hype on Houses of the Holy which came out today 51 years ago ;) I did a 50th video last year. Really enjoyed your stories of your experiencing them in concert I love to hear peoples stories. I have heard so many stories of people that were lucky enough to see them live yet they were not "huge" fans which is interesting. I would do anything to be able to go back and see every damn show !!! I am still waiting for that time machine to be built. I did my reviews of the 2014 Deluxe editions when they came out. At the time I could not afford the Box sets and maybe I will track them down soon. They did have shows after the Day on The Green they all went to New Orleans for the next gig at the Superdome. Unfortunate it is there when Plant received the phone call from home about Karac, his son passing away. After that, yes Grant, Bonham, Richard Cole and John Binden did settle legal issues with Graham about the Oakland indecent. Really enjoyed your connection and review and stories of the greatest band ever!!!! You did forget to mention that the Beatles did break up because they knew they could not compete with Led Zeppelin... 😂😉. This was a enjoyable watch !!!
Great video @mazzysmusic - Led Zeppelin is by far and away my favorite band. I feel about them, how you feel about The Beatles, at a formative time in my life their music made the greatest impact on me. You figure bands and artists have come and gone, and the phases we go through, but somehow that band that made us fall in love with them and made that impact still will reign supreme. I found it refreshing when you said (I am paraphrasing) I like Led Zeppelin, I don't know where they will be ranked in your personal list, that I liked because you were true to yourself and us versus feeling obligated to ranked an artist - this is why I loved your title. There is no artist - none - that should be obligated in anyones Top 10, you do a disservice to the artist and yourself by being fake. That is how I feel about The Beatles, I like them, I don't know where they would fall, but they would fall somewhere and there isn't no hate on them, kind of like how you were on Zeppelin, but at some point in my list they would fall. On with the discography of what you own, if money was no object I would be a "Led Zeppelin Completist" The archival sets are a dream for me - I would be a completist, I have avoided picking them up because I know I am setting myself nowadays for what they go for a solid $2K bill. To me, they are worth it, but with competing priorities and my wife would be like "we need this and you bought that." I easily restrain myself. The I think you called it the "Anvil box set" I will refer as the "Roadie" box set is to me insane, when I saw it I went why do I want to get up that many times to change a record? Plus I felt unless you had audiophile equipment am I really getting the most value out of it. My collection I am not slumming it by any means, I do have that Complete Studio Recordings box set you showed, my favorite is the 2008 Definitive Collection Japanese SHM-CD Mini-LP box set. That thing is gorgeous. I also have two Ludwig Led Zeppelin II records which are my grails, one day I hope to find someone who has two turquoise Led Zeppelin I records and looking to do a straight up trade. I own various pressings of Led Zeppelin's discography and a few bootlegs so I feel I got the mighty Zep covered. Continue doing great content Mazzy!
obligatory is an appropriate word..i saw zep at the garden in '75, and, even though i owned their albums and liked their music, it was almost like a concert you were expected to go to, rather than something unique (this was also around the time i saw the stones at the garden as well)..but i agree about the alternate covers..everyone should do that.. hope you're feeling well my friend..peace always.. rocky
Great to see/hear you discussing a Hard Rock Band like Zeppelin. I also do not consider Zeppelin in my Top 10 Bands. That is mostly due to age and who I grew up with (Van Halen, Iron Maiden, AC/DC) but clearly Zep is an extremely important and influential Band. Fact remains for me, that there are some Zeppelin Records I still want to add to my collection. 👏
Led Zeppelin was a well-regarded white British blues band that developed some epic studio arrangements in mid-career (mostly by multi-instrumentalist John Paul Jones, I think?). For a few years early on they were mostly famous for being stadium-level popular (more in the US than the UK), but I really came to appreciate their atmospheric sonics on densely produced tracks that became my favorites, like "The Rain Song," "The Ocean," "No Quarter," "Kashmir"... and "Stairway to Heaven" (it's the arrangement that makes that one so spectacular -- certainly not the lyrics!). Some have detected the influence of Mingus in those arrangements, and I think I can detect that when I'm in the mood. I'm glad I don't have to "rank" them, because... why?
My understanding is that the US mob didn’t like the cut that Zeppelin’s management got from their touring profits, so there was a lot of tension between them.
Enjoyed that. Like you, I'm pretty ambivalent about LZ. Growing up, all the music freaks around me loved them. I get the dynamics and the drama, their best songs, and Page's vision. But I saw Plant on his first solo tour and thought what a poser he was. Up his own ass. Ever since I've thought their music and their archival curation cold and calculating. Hard to love. I always go back to LZ1 too. What a statement. Before their reputation overtook their music.
I can state with first hand experience that Bill Graham was not above getting physical at concerts. I had front row seats for the Dead at Long Beach Arena in 1988 and the crowd was pushing towards stage. As I was trying to get back to my seat I felt someone grab me from behind and turned around to see Bill Graham. It wasn't a big deal but was quite the surprise. Bill was just trying to get things under control. That said, I'm not surprised that Bonham and people associated with LZ would resort to thuggish behavior. That they behave like drunken louts seems par for course. And greatest drummer ever? GMAFB.
Great timing, Mazzy! You did it for me, right? I've just promised to go total immersion on Led Zep, having been skeptical for years - except 'Kashmir' and 'Stairway to Heaven.' My skepticism came from a really silly reason and a more logical one. The silly reason is that my friends and contemporaries at college were so smug about them being the best band in the world. In fact, I think Led Zep may have been the only rock band out there, with an occasional acknowledgement of Blue Oyster Cult. And there Led Zep were, open-shirted precursors to a hair metal boy band. Yuck! The better reason is that I agreed with the quip that Led Zep were the best cover band in the world. A lot of their songs sounded 'borrowed,' and apparently were. However, they had that Plant/Page special effects filter that all their songs went through, and which made them theirs, whoever actually wrote the original song. But I have resisted Led Zep long enough. And I have always admired the fact that they folded after John Bonham died, in the same way that I have always admired another band I have never been able to get into - Def Leppard - for keeping their drummer after he lost his arm. These hair metal bands do have a certain style, and Joe Elliott definitely does. So, on with the scuba suit, and it's time to listen to Led Zeppelin end-to-end. I'm sure they're shaking in their boots like X-Factor contestants awaiting my final thoughts. I'll probably give them "foive."
Top 3 band for me but like you I only have the 2014 reissues on vinyl, along with the original CDs mastered by Barry Diament. Also would probably take the first album if I could only keep one, but LZII is a close second for me. Side 3 of PG is wonderful and HotH is underrated in my view ✌️ ❤
I'm with you, not in my top 10, maybe lower then top 15 to 20. I love all the songs that did not get beat down into the mud on FM radio. Although, Kashmir is my favorite.
LZ III hav always been my favourite - well, tied with the 4th. Ok then: the 1st through the 4th. All essential. BTW, 'D'Yer Mak'er' (HOTH) is actually pronounced 'Jermaker': Jamaica. Pure tongue in cheek from these guys...

I haven’t compared various CDs. Just that box. Patrick PBrhal would be the best person to share which exact pressing are supposedly the best. But folks also disagree on some.
I suppose it’s all about musical preference. I always get a little shocked when people think that just because they’re obviously an unbelievable amazing rock band, they have to be in your top 3 or something. What if your music genre preferences are elsewhere? Even if you admire their talent, they’ll probably be way down on your list. Right? Am I seeing this wrong?
Zeppelin became better as time went on where they really broke new ground and really started writing the blueprint for a whole new genre of music. Not to say the heavy blues based stuff of the first 2 albums wasn’t great, but they really altered the approach and the interpretation to blues based music as they started to add different influences into the mix. That’s why I strongly disagree with you that the first album is the best and done. If that’s your opinion I really don’t think you’re much of a Zeppelin fan which you pretty much admit and that’s fine of course. Music is totally subjective.
Strange how people get so precious about the artists they love. I never understood it myself. I'm not a Beatles fan and they wouldn't make my Top 10, but like you with Zep, I listen to em and I like a lot of what I hear. Zep, who I was lucky enough to see twice at Knebworth and even luckier to see the one off reunion here in London are a definite top three for me. Its not a competition, its opinion and personal taste, but I believe the Zep catalogue is far better than the Fab Fours, so sue me. Yes, I can do without hearing ' Stairway to Heaven' ever again but then I could do with never having heard 'Octopus's Garden' Keep up the good work 👍

I recall a conversation almost 40 years ago when a friend of a friend said matter-of-factly that Led Zeppelin was _everybody's_ favorite band. I thought that was an odd odd thing to say since, even though I have several LZ albums, they were nowhere near my favorite band. I enjoy listening to them when a song is played on the radio while driving but find a full album too much, especially as I enter geezerhood. I agree with you 100% that alternate mixes of any album should be clearly identifiable. Although I have no interest in acquiring them, those LZ expanded editions seem like a great approach that respects the fans/buyers. Kudos to the people behind those. Edit to add: I suspect noone on earth has used the word "tempestuous" more than you Mazzy. 🙃
Strange to see them in the daytime. The regular non-deluxe widely available Jimmy Page remasters are not physically any different than previous versions, beyond a hype sticker. But these are just remasters not remixes like the Beatles. I love Zeppelin I and some of the early live/BBC footage from around then. But they were just getting started and were barely writing originals. Houses of the Holy is their crowning achievement for me. The Rain Song alone puts it way up there. Agree about IV. Can hardly listen to it these days, especially side 1.
how could anybody critize you for your view on Led Zeppelin? For many music lovers it is more than challenging to sqeeze your favorite bands into a top 10 or even top 3 list. In my top 10 there are no Rolling Stones for instance, which lead to heavy discussions with my music loving friends. But that's part of the fun. Coming back to LZ, I've got all regular albums as Deluxe HighRes files as downloads, LZ1, LZ2, LZ4 and Houses Of The Holy from Classic Records, two of them printed in the US, two by Reson in Switzerland. LZ3, Physical Graffiti, How The West Was Won I've got the Jimmy Page masterminded Box Sets. When I listen to any of these records, I normally don't compare the sound quality. Still, the Classic records seem to be the best sounding copies I have ever heard. I never saw the Led Zeppelin live, but attended a great Page / Plant gig at Bizarre festival in Cologne, where they did a lot of LZ material. One of the best live experiences I had so far.
not crazy at all about the remasters of Zeppelin on wax. They all sound lousy to me with exception of 1, maybe 2. 3 is a okay - do not care for the rest. I know I am going against the grain because I know Page knows his way around a studio- but... I think they could be done better by one of the people who on the out front (like Kevin Gray or Bernie) and pressed by QRP. I'm in if that ever happens. All the layering on Physical REALLY deserves a MUCH better remastering. That lp sounds simply lousy.
Oddly I am a fan of Zeppelin I have the albums! But I rarely play them now! As a 14 year old wow but now at 64 I just play other stuff! Do tastes change? Something certainly to think about!

I actually bought Houses of the Holy as soon as it came out. On the strength of the fourth album but I was a bit disappointed initially. I returned the album instead of letting it grow on me. I regret doing that mainly because Robert Ludwig engineered it. I wasn’t aware of who he was. I also regret not buying more imports .
Led Zeppelin is one of the best Bands in the 70s, but the Hype today i didn't understand. Bands like Uriah Heep, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath made better Records in the 70s as the Zep. What Led Zeppelin do very well, they stole many sounds from the old Blues Heroes like Willi Dixon etc. Zeppelin was a great influencial Band, but the other named ones are the same.
Like you, Led Zeppelin is cool but will never be in my top 10. I found them generally derivative and too much “look at me”excess. But what bothered me most is they ripped off so many songs from old black blues men! I listen, but not often. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Maz, I’m a subscriber to your channel. I enjoy your honesty & eclectic interesting take on music art & dare I say life. I know that what I’m about to say might just throw some over the rails buttttt… Led Zeppelin game changed music in the 70’s in similar (not necessarily esthetically ) way that The Beatles did in the 60’s. Each of them more or less ‘owned’ their respective decades. Each band has endured throughout time. There, I said it! Whew! Keep on doing what you do! ✌🏻

Nobody mentions them or know about them , because they were very short lived in the late 60's with only 4 albums ( Have them all now) ! I've seen a few clips on TH-cam and fell in love with their Psychedelic R&B vibe ! I thought I had everything in music I could ever want till , I found this diamond in the rough for me., and I knew about Brian Auger's Oblivion Express my whole life , from the 70's !❤❤👈😻
My go to Zeppelin album is Phisical Graffiti. Bought all the remastered cd's from Amazon during covid..Love the band.Lovedyour enthusiasm &music intellect. lol Norman ❤❤
I was born July 22, 1954 in San Francisco California quite similar to you Norman going to Fillmore west,Winterland, Golden Gate Park, Oakland Coliseum, Berkeley community. first time I saw Led Zeppelin was in Oakland Coliseum indoors, and they were touring on Led Zeppelin three. The second time I saw them was at Berkeley community theater. I had second row seats. It was really hot in like September but it was a Led Zeppelin for Tour. Then then I was kind of a jazz snob so I didn’t go to Kezar. although I used to work at Kezar, my family had a hotdog stand. I did see Grateful Dead, Waylon Jennings, and New Riders at Kezar a week before Zeppelin. Unfortunat fortunately, I’ve got to see Led Zeppelin perform the Physical Graffiti tour. I was up in Vancouver skiing and I went and saw them play in Vancouver the best show of all three. thanks for sharing.
Hi Mazzi years ago in London, I work for Mercari we sold Led Zeppelin some PA system I went to set it all up for them to come and listen to guess what yeah they never turned up they said we’ll have it said that never been a great Zepplin fan but thanks for your feed on them I’m in the UK living in Sheffield at the minute but there was great days for me. I would suggest that Physical Graffiti is the band's most diverse album not the debut in which i agree with Martin Popoff it sounds old (or maybe better stated that it is of it's time). Still each to their own.

I became a Zeppelin fan when I was 14 years old in 1977. My love for the band grew each year as I waited for a new album and a tour of the US! The new album, "In Through the Out Door," was released on December 7th, 1979. The cover art (Designed by Hipgnosis) had seven views (A through G) of a scene in a bar. The tour would not happen due to the passing of drummer John Bonham. I was sad and heartbroken, to say the least. This album is also my least favorite in their catalog; I have yet to reach for it in over 20 years, and now it's just there to complete it.

Hi Mazzy - Led Zep would definitely be in my top 10 of all time. Favourite album - hmmm that's difficult. Off the top - maybe their 3rd album, which wasn't particularly well received following Led Zep II - but I just loved their acoustic stuff. Saw them live, "in the evening" - can ya dig it lolol. I have huge memories of that show, especially their acoustic set - and despite some negative stuff on his guitar playing - Jimmy WAS a great guitar player. Thx ! I also bought these LZ records in vinyl some years ago. Once both Robert Plant & John Paul Jones visited my local record store.
the first I heard of this band was in the form of a rectangular promotional flyer that someone slipped through the vents in all the outside lockers at my high school . it had a line drawing of a rose and announced the band was playing at the rose palace, a big warehouse with indoor outdoor synthetic carpet grass that changed it into a concert hall, the carpet even ran up and covered the stage, in a continuous covering. it was like the last day of school with everybody throwing away all these various colored craft papers from their lockers. I asked my beatlemaniac friend who read all the English rock press if he had heard of the band, and he said he had kind of heard of them, they were supposed to be pretty good.
although I thought it odd to have just one band on the bill, I went and enjoyed the show, which had appealingly clever stagecraft , for what was essentially a warehouse with a box on the floor for a stage.
Aside from page spinning around in a kind of Chinese magician silk get up with colored silk that flashed in the light to accent his musical statements, the primary sound system was in the form of two big onstage cabinets that intentionally looked like two giant home stereo speakers , one on each side of the stage , angled in a bit, with walnut looking sides and a typical tweed front cloth, which plant, at one point in the show , climbed up on top of in a call and response to the guitar, creating the effect of a miniature band in a land of the giants movie. that was before the days of super loud rock shows.
I also wanted to say I appreciated not being called stupid right off the bat. I skip all of the posts that start with " it's the music, stupid".
Love the Zep - I have a particular love for Presence! Which makes me unusual😂agree that Live Yardbirds 68 is well worth getting
Thanks Mazzy for another excellent and very entertaining video. Always great to hear your stories. Like you, Led Zeppelin aren't in my top ten list of favourite bands but I did have a sizeable vinyl collection. I sold it all off about 15 years ago and replaced it with the Japanese mini-lp CD versions when they were released (the amazing thing about them is that they did brilliant replicas of the original albums right down to the spinning wheel on Led Zep III). I talked with Bob Ludwig a few years ago and and he told me that he still has the original test pressing for his (RL) cut of Led Zep II. He jokingly said it was his retirement but he may have been right. Can't imagine what that might be worth today.

It was awesome, they played songs from their forthcoming album, IV.
I felt so high from their concert, had to eat before driving back across the bridge to SF.

A bit younger than you Mazzy. Just too young for Knebworth. I got to assist setting up the lighting rig for the last tour rehearsals. Hardest day’s work in my life hoisting lights and watching Bonzo’s drum tech polish his kit. Never saw the band.

you may well like Rober Plant's secret hometown band, Saving Grace. A rather delicious return to rootsy English folk and dusty Americana and beautifully played too. There are clips online. Who knows if they will ever formally release music but the lucky audiences who dine on their music absolutely love them! Other information on request!

LZ is one of my top five or so favorite rock bands, but I certainly have no trouble understanding why other people wouldn't rate them so high; whereas with the Beatles, my second favorite band (after the Dead), I find it harder to imagine how someone who likes the Beatles (as most people I know do) wouldn't put that in their list of top few bands or so, given the range, brilliance, influence, and the like of that band's work.
It's simply amazing to me how many different versions of 8 studio albums have been produced, almost like a bunch of soups but with the same ingredients.
I was trying to remember what the deal was with the "Jimmy Page" reissues of the original albums with the silver "hologram stickers" on the back. I had a couple of those and, although Led Zeppelin records were never particularly well-recorded, I remember them sounding notably "meh." It order to punch them up a little, I'd use a vintage '70s receiver and turn on the LOUDNESS control.

Enjoyed your walk down memory lane Zep gig wise. Never got to see them, which I kind of regret. Was offered a ticket for LZ at Knebworth '79 but chose to see some obscure punk band at an even more obscure pub, then spent the rest of the night at the Speakeasy in London. However, Led Zeppelin are still a top ten band for me as their dynamics, their sonic plays on lights and shades keep them interesting. My go to albums are Physical Graffiti and the first three tracks (and No Quarter) on LZ V. Got all the "Classic" reissues as they came out cause I wanted clean copies, didn't play them for a long time. Only to appreciate their production values once I did(!)
jimmy page as a guitarist was at his best from 69-72 imo. would have been great if you saw them in that time. from 73 onward led zeppelin became a stadium band. still fantastic but not as intimate and jaw dropping as the early shows.
77 is an awesome year. jimmy was very sloppy on this tour but still had tons of chops. any recollection of the 45min performances of no quarter? those are my fav. also love ten years gone from that tour as well as kashmir and achilles last stand.
I really don’t recall it being 45 minutes, but it was long and beautiful. I remember the wonderful piano parts and jimmy’s guitar and it felt almost spiritual jazz like at times. 🎹🎸

I’m with you on Led Zeppelin’s first album, that’s my favorite also. The one album that doesn’t get much attention is Coda. It’s worth checking the Coda deluxe set out for the extra bonus tracks. It has the best bonus tracks out of all the deluxe sets in my opinion. I saw many concerts in the seventies like you but I never got to see Zeppelin. I remember when they played at Madison Square Garden in 1973, I couldn’t get tickets. ✌️

OK I am ready for this !!! That Yardbrids '68 is fantastic, the end of the Yardbirds before the restructure and name change great set. I think you meant me that bought the LZII RL copy which sounds great and "eye thank you". With the acoustic feel of LZIII and the music you like I can see why that ranks high on your list with LZI. Love the hype on Houses of the Holy which came out today 51 years ago ;) I did a 50th video last year.
Really enjoyed your stories of your experiencing them in concert I love to hear peoples stories. I have heard so many stories of people that were lucky enough to see them live yet they were not "huge" fans which is interesting. I would do anything to be able to go back and see every damn show !!! I am still waiting for that time machine to be built. I did my reviews of the 2014 Deluxe editions when they came out. At the time I could not afford the Box sets and maybe I will track them down soon. They did have shows after the Day on The Green they all went to New Orleans for the next gig at the Superdome. Unfortunate it is there when Plant received the phone call from home about Karac, his son passing away. After that, yes Grant, Bonham, Richard Cole and John Binden did settle legal issues with Graham about the Oakland indecent. Really enjoyed your connection and review and stories of the greatest band ever!!!! You did forget to mention that the Beatles did break up because they knew they could not compete with Led Zeppelin... 😂😉. This was a enjoyable watch !!!

Great video @mazzysmusic - Led Zeppelin is by far and away my favorite band. I feel about them, how you feel about The Beatles, at a formative time in my life their music made the greatest impact on me. You figure bands and artists have come and gone, and the phases we go through, but somehow that band that made us fall in love with them and made that impact still will reign supreme.
I found it refreshing when you said (I am paraphrasing) I like Led Zeppelin, I don't know where they will be ranked in your personal list, that I liked because you were true to yourself and us versus feeling obligated to ranked an artist - this is why I loved your title.
There is no artist - none - that should be obligated in anyones Top 10, you do a disservice to the artist and yourself by being fake.
That is how I feel about The Beatles, I like them, I don't know where they would fall, but they would fall somewhere and there isn't no hate on them, kind of like how you were on Zeppelin, but at some point in my list they would fall.
On with the discography of what you own, if money was no object I would be a "Led Zeppelin Completist"
The archival sets are a dream for me - I would be a completist, I have avoided picking them up because I know I am setting myself nowadays for what they go for a solid $2K bill. To me, they are worth it, but with competing priorities and my wife would be like "we need this and you bought that." I easily restrain myself.
The I think you called it the "Anvil box set" I will refer as the "Roadie" box set is to me insane, when I saw it I went why do I want to get up that many times to change a record? Plus I felt unless you had audiophile equipment am I really getting the most value out of it.
My collection I am not slumming it by any means, I do have that Complete Studio Recordings box set you showed, my favorite is the 2008 Definitive Collection Japanese SHM-CD Mini-LP box set. That thing is gorgeous. I also have two Ludwig Led Zeppelin II records which are my grails, one day I hope to find someone who has two turquoise Led Zeppelin I records and looking to do a straight up trade.
I own various pressings of Led Zeppelin's discography and a few bootlegs so I feel I got the mighty Zep covered. Continue doing great content Mazzy!
obligatory is an appropriate word..i saw zep at the garden in '75, and, even though i owned their albums and liked their music, it was almost like a concert you were expected to go to, rather than something unique (this was also around the time i saw the stones at the garden as well)..but i agree about the alternate covers..everyone should do that..

Great to see/hear you discussing a Hard Rock Band like Zeppelin. I also do not consider Zeppelin in my Top 10 Bands. That is mostly due to age and who I grew up with (Van Halen, Iron Maiden,
AC/DC) but clearly Zep is an extremely important and influential Band. Fact remains for me, that there are some Zeppelin Records I still want to add to my collection. 👏

Led Zeppelin was a well-regarded white British blues band that developed some epic studio arrangements in mid-career (mostly by multi-instrumentalist John Paul Jones, I think?). For a few years early on they were mostly famous for being stadium-level popular (more in the US than the UK), but I really came to appreciate their atmospheric sonics on densely produced tracks that became my favorites, like "The Rain Song," "The Ocean," "No Quarter," "Kashmir"... and "Stairway to Heaven" (it's the arrangement that makes that one so spectacular -- certainly not the lyrics!). Some have detected the influence of Mingus in those arrangements, and I think I can detect that when I'm in the mood. I'm glad I don't have to "rank" them, because... why?
My understanding is that the US mob didn’t like the cut that Zeppelin’s management got from their touring profits, so there was a lot of tension between them.

Enjoyed that. Like you, I'm pretty ambivalent about LZ. Growing up, all the music freaks around me loved them. I get the dynamics and the drama, their best songs, and Page's vision. But I saw Plant on his first solo tour and thought what a poser he was. Up his own ass. Ever since I've thought their music and their archival curation cold and calculating. Hard to love.
I always go back to LZ1 too. What a statement. Before their reputation overtook their music.

I can state with first hand experience that Bill Graham was not above getting physical at concerts. I had front row seats for the Dead at Long Beach Arena in 1988 and the crowd was pushing towards stage. As I was trying to get back to my seat I felt someone grab me from behind and turned around to see Bill Graham. It wasn't a big deal but was quite the surprise. Bill was just trying to get things under control.
That said, I'm not surprised that Bonham and people associated with LZ would resort to thuggish behavior. That they behave like drunken louts seems par for course. And greatest drummer ever? GMAFB.

I've just promised to go total immersion on Led Zep, having been skeptical for years - except 'Kashmir' and 'Stairway to Heaven.'
My skepticism came from a really silly reason and a more logical one. The silly reason is that my friends and contemporaries at college were so smug about them being the best band in the world. In fact, I think Led Zep may have been the only rock band out there, with an occasional acknowledgement of Blue Oyster Cult. And there Led Zep were, open-shirted precursors to a hair metal boy band. Yuck!
The better reason is that I agreed with the quip that Led Zep were the best cover band in the world. A lot of their songs sounded 'borrowed,' and apparently were. However, they had that Plant/Page special effects filter that all their songs went through, and which made them theirs, whoever actually wrote the original song.
But I have resisted Led Zep long enough. And I have always admired the fact that they folded after John Bonham died, in the same way that I have always admired another band I have never been able to get into - Def Leppard - for keeping their drummer after he lost his arm. These hair metal bands do have a certain style, and Joe Elliott definitely does.
So, on with the scuba suit, and it's time to listen to Led Zeppelin end-to-end. I'm sure they're shaking in their boots like X-Factor contestants awaiting my final thoughts. I'll probably give them "foive."
If I hadn't been interested in Led Zeppelin, I wouldn't have found out about Jake Holmes.
Led Zep: They always left me cold. In High School most of my friends loved them-I was more of a Who fan.

Top 3 band for me but like you I only have the 2014 reissues on vinyl, along with the original CDs mastered by Barry Diament. Also would probably take the first album if I could only keep one, but LZII is a close second for me. Side 3 of PG is wonderful and HotH is underrated in my view ✌️ ❤
I'm with you, not in my top 10, maybe lower then top 15 to 20. I love all the songs that did not get beat down into the mud on FM radio. Although, Kashmir is my favorite.

I suppose it’s all about musical preference. I always get a little shocked when people think that just because they’re obviously an unbelievable amazing rock band, they have to be in your top 3 or something. What if your music genre preferences are elsewhere? Even if you admire their talent, they’ll probably be way down on your list. Right? Am I seeing this wrong?
Zeppelin became better as time went on where they really broke new ground and really started writing the blueprint for a whole new genre of music. Not to say the heavy blues based stuff of the first 2 albums wasn’t great, but they really altered the approach and the interpretation to blues based music as they started to add different influences into the mix. That’s why I strongly disagree with you that the first album is the best and done. If that’s your opinion I really don’t think you’re much of a Zeppelin fan which you pretty much admit and that’s fine of course. Music is totally subjective.
Strange how people get so precious about the artists they love. I never understood it myself. I'm not a Beatles fan and they wouldn't make my Top 10, but like you with Zep, I listen to em and I like a lot of what I hear.
Zep, who I was lucky enough to see twice at Knebworth and even luckier to see the one off reunion here in London are a definite top three for me. Its not a competition, its opinion and personal taste, but I believe the Zep catalogue is far better than the Fab Fours, so sue me. Yes, I can do without hearing ' Stairway to Heaven' ever again but then I could do with never having heard 'Octopus's Garden'

Careful with that Houses of the Holy..I got put in Facebook Jail when a friend tagged me with that album cover saying 'We should get together for some good tunes' and POOF FB jail... My Fav Zeppelin albums l, ll, lV, Presence, Houses of the Holy, Physical Graffiti, lll & In Through the Out Door. Other than Live albums I don't consider any other releases any good
I recall a conversation almost 40 years ago when a friend of a friend said matter-of-factly that Led Zeppelin was _everybody's_ favorite band. I thought that was an odd odd thing to say since, even though I have several LZ albums, they were nowhere near my favorite band. I enjoy listening to them when a song is played on the radio while driving but find a full album too much, especially as I enter geezerhood.
I agree with you 100% that alternate mixes of any album should be clearly identifiable. Although I have no interest in acquiring them, those LZ expanded editions seem like a great approach that respects the fans/buyers. Kudos to the people behind those.

Is that Led Zeppelin III UK a plum label original? If so, that should sound better by far than the 2016 reissue.
Strange to see them in the daytime. The regular non-deluxe widely available Jimmy Page remasters are not physically any different than previous versions, beyond a hype sticker. But these are just remasters not remixes like the Beatles. I love Zeppelin I and some of the early live/BBC footage from around then. But they were just getting started and were barely writing originals. Houses of the Holy is their crowning achievement for me. The Rain Song alone puts it way up there. Agree about IV. Can hardly listen to it these days, especially side 1.

how could anybody critize you for your view on Led Zeppelin? For many music lovers it is more than challenging to sqeeze your favorite bands into a top 10 or even top 3 list. In my top 10 there are no Rolling Stones for instance, which lead to heavy discussions with my music loving friends. But that's part of the fun. Coming back to LZ, I've got all regular albums as Deluxe HighRes files as downloads, LZ1, LZ2, LZ4 and Houses Of The Holy from Classic Records, two of them printed in the US, two by Reson in Switzerland. LZ3, Physical Graffiti, How The West Was Won I've got the Jimmy Page masterminded Box Sets. When I listen to any of these records, I normally don't compare the sound quality. Still, the Classic records seem to be the best sounding copies I have ever heard. I never saw the Led Zeppelin live, but attended a great Page / Plant gig at Bizarre festival in Cologne, where they did a lot of LZ material. One of the best live experiences I had so far.

not crazy at all about the remasters of Zeppelin on wax. They all sound lousy to me with exception of 1, maybe 2. 3 is a okay - do not care for the rest. I know I am going against the grain because I know Page knows his way around a studio- but... I think they could be done better by one of the people who on the out front (like Kevin Gray or Bernie) and pressed by QRP. I'm in if that ever happens. All the layering on Physical REALLY deserves a MUCH better remastering. That lp sounds simply lousy.
I've always maintained there's no ONE Zeppelin albun that's the best, but merely three mediocre ones out of the eight.
Oddly I am a fan of Zeppelin I have the albums! But I rarely play them now! As a 14 year old wow but now at 64 I just play other stuff! Do tastes change? Something certainly to think about!
I suggest revisiting them.

I actually bought Houses of the Holy as soon as it came out. On the strength of the fourth album but I was a bit disappointed initially. I returned the album instead of letting it grow on me. I regret doing that mainly because Robert Ludwig engineered it. I wasn’t aware of who he was. I also regret not buying more imports .
Led Zeppelin is one of the best Bands in the 70s, but the Hype today i didn't understand. Bands like Uriah Heep, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath made better Records in the 70s as the Zep. What Led Zeppelin do very well, they stole many sounds from the old Blues Heroes like Willi Dixon etc. Zeppelin was a great influencial Band, but the other named ones are the same.

Like you, Led Zeppelin is cool but will never be in my top 10. I found them generally derivative and too much “look at me”excess. But what bothered me most is they ripped off so many songs from old black blues men! I listen, but not often. Thanks for sharing.
