    Nutn. I just want to quickly share with you, what you have done for me.
    Over this past year I have been dealing with intense depression, when I get down, I GET DOWN. Whenever I am feeling this way, there is almost nothing that can make me feel content and/or happy about life. Except- for watching your videos. Thankyou so much for doing what you do, and keep doing it. :) You're a great man.

    Nutnfancy, great vid as always. I found this vid vary informative and from personal experiance (from camping in all of the seasons including -35 deg C weather A good tent will keep you some what warm). One thing is to always check your gear before you leave just in case something is missing, been there and had to rely on my survival training to build my own shelter nearby the main camp, Great training time for the new guys and gals on how too build such a shelter.

    Excellent music in the introduction! I like the song so much that I found it on youtube and downloaded to my mp3 player. Its called "Long Road Ahead" by Kevin Macleod.

    Nutn I have used an LL Bean Light Stuff #2 for about 10 years which has finally worn out and I replaced it with a North Face Bullfrog 23. This tent design seems to be the best compromise between space, simplicity, strength, and weight to me. I can set it up in under 5 minute by myself in the dark if needed, has a good size vestibule, and tips the scales at 4.5lbs. I like the fact that the LL Bean tent solely used clips but the sleeves on the Bullfrog are not too bad.

    Brew some coffee, sit back, relax, and enjoy the nutnfancy project!
    Great way to spend a sunday morning!
    Id like to mention though about camo...anything,
    I think it draws attention to you during a WROL situation, because those who have the camo..are preceived as being prepared and having what is needed by the general..sheeple.
    Sheepdogs and only fend off so many wolves, sheeple, until they are over-powered

    " i dont have half an hour to watch these long videos" That's because you must not be in the market for a backpacking tent. That's what this series is designed for and it takes time to convey quality information. This series is a delivery on a promise to many of my outdoorsy TNPrs. Peace.

    Why so many rude comments? I like the vids. I like to know the info is coming from a true genuine person with an experienced background in the subject. I find nutn's personal experiences relatable and are on the same page with many of his thoughts on pou and comfort. If you want straight forward specs go to the manafacturers website and download a user guide and have fun reading.

    To the guys winging about the length of nutnfancy's vids, DONT WATCH THEM! These video's, although entertaining are meant as an indepth gear guide, not a tv show to keep you entertained! If you are going to be forking out hundreds of dollars for this sort of gear you want to be sure that you're making an educated buy. I appreciate the in depth explanations and advice, if you want specs go to the manufacturers website or look at a pamphlete.
    Keep up the great work nutnfancy!

    Wow I have to give it to you, I never watched a 32 minute how-to, review or anything similar, not even a third of that, and stayed interested. This time I did. 32 minutes. So many details, and personally the takehome message for me: don't buy your tent too small. I have to add, I kindof think many people want to go ultralight, simply because they are worried of not being able to carry the weight, maybe due to an injury, maybe something else. Anyways, thx for this excellent explanation.

  • @sharpie443
    @sharpie443 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    No I was talking in addition to the tent. if you have a bright tent that stands out then you could just have the tarp to hide it. That way you can have one tent for different applications. I've used just a tarp for shelter and it sucked. I was actually cought in the rain for an hour during a hunting trip and thats all I had.

    I have a thought regarding the coloring argument in the video. I tend to use bright colors for two reasons. My primary reason is in the event of a problem where I need help and have to be found. If doing backcountry camping, accidents happen and I want to be found and spotted easily. The other reason was already mentioned in your video which is so it's easily found.

  • @couchcamperTM
    @couchcamperTM 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    i had a USArmy-type cotton tent from the 1950s - despite its weight (its ment to be carried by 2 men and i always had to carry it alone) and the lack of a groundsheet, it was very good in sun, rain (up to 3 days constantly) light snow + medium wind. i had lots of dogs idling in it when it was hot. I could actually cool beer in it. :) now im more the tarp guy. if i ever buy a real tent again, it has to be for 2-3 ppl but less then 3kg. hard to find a tent that is rugged enough and not 2 expensive

  • @LycorisSound
    @LycorisSound 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    I saw a lot of people using the tarp method on the Appalachian Trail this summer. You can fit a lot of sleeping bags under one good-sized tarp. I myself used a "tube tent". But hey--I'm only 130 lbs and I needed to cut the pack weight somewhere.

    I'd have to agree with Nutnfancy for just one of his reasons, the bugs. When I was young, I somehow got bitten in one of my eyes by a bug. My eye was so swollen it couldn't close. Sleeping was so difficult I can only guess that I got sleep for several days by passing out late in the night.

It was around 1985 when i last seen him use the one i was talking about I was in the Marines with him he got out of the Army and later went to the Marines as our head ofthe scout sipers. i just was suprised how well it worked for him but heavy i am shure. I think he did use a pad in there as well.

    your point on color is useful in your situation but also think of loud colored tents in which they have the firepower to get you out of emergency situations like being spotted from your tent or making a signal with you brightly colored tent. I think the loud colors are more suited for hikers who stay a camp site one night then move on. rescue crew will have a hard time finding the thru hiker more than your style since your location is known by somebody in town where as the hiker's is not.

    3 seasons means the item is good for Spring, Summer and Fall. The item is not built for harsh climates; such as snow. Depending on where you live you may be able to use your items in the winter. On a sleeping bag, there will a temp. rating. This rating will tell you how cold of weather you can go camping in and still be warm.

    Great vid, I'm off to watch the next ones. I really like my 4 man A frame Timberline Outfitter by Eureka. Its not really a backpacking tent (10 lbs) but it can take some punishment. I've camped with it mostly in Canada on the Great Lakes (Georgian Bay) and almost always have to set up in rain or constant wind and I can set it up alone in about 10 minutes or less. Its stood up to constant 40mph winds with 60mph gusts with rain quite well.

    Nutn, any thoughts about the Eureka InntoRest series, I got a line on some at $150 which seems like a pretty decent price, although I never had good luck with the Eureka A frames back in the Day. Eureka producing good quality tents these days?

    i'm thinking about a eureka Inntorest 2. at about 5.5 lbs, fits 2 people, and has 2 vestibules. Apparently it is well made and good for Later fall and earlier spring too (according to the manufacturer.) My only concern about it is the weight.

    Hey Nutnfancy, dig your vids and am a subscriber. Can you or some other person clear something up for me? When you say you are a bivouac style backpacker, it conflicts with the definition: a temporary camp without tents or cover, used especially by soldiers or mountaineers. You ARE using a tent in your camp. Could you please explain your intent? Are you just meaning setting up a base camp and then doing your day trips from there? Thanks

    The don't seem to make the NorthFace Boulder 33 and longer. I slept in a NorthFace Rock 22 every night for 2 years, and they still make it. It's just a little bit low end in quality. I had 2 poles snap (a month apart) during the middle of the night, and my single door zipper went bad not long after that.

    in response to marcisgreat-
    my friend has a qucha 3 man version pop up, i have a eurohike (you probably dont get these in america given the name :P) they are essentially lightweight car camping tents, the 3 man versions fold to a disc, which is light but inconvenient to carry. useful for music festivals, or staying in campsites. the main drawback is lack of cover over the entrance for crappy weather, although the newer models are including porch cover.
    quick pitching in cruddy weather tho!

    Tents .My best tent so far for the money is one i got 4 years ago at walmart. Ozark Trail the size i think it is a 9x9 I seam sealed this tent 2 times when i got it . I think it was a round 50 bucks . My Samoyed dog and me went camping with it 2 days ago 12/30/10 60 deg to 19 with a thunder storm that produced tornados in the state. The rain turned to freezing rain. the only bad thing was getting the zipper un stuck from ice.Not one drop of rain in side. good as a tent 6 times its price.
