Great video. John Mayer grew up a town over from me in CT. I remember when we were both coming up on the local scene (he didn't play much in CT but occasionally) no one ever would have picked him to be the breakout. And after Real World, never would have imagined that he would become one of our generations most revered guitarists. -Mark

I’m glad you enjoyed the video! In fact all of my come “what makes him so damn good/what makes her so damn good” Videos are really great! I wish I could’ve included all of the footage that I had for John there but it was just going to be way too long of a video!

I heard Real World (actual song title is "No Such Thing") in my car back in 2002 and I stopped and waited to find out who it was. Notice how it starts, the rhythmic tricks there. That is not easy or normal stuff. It's very difficult. I was very surprised later to find out that he was a solid rock guitarist in a Hendrix mold. At Guitar Player they looked back and found his tape -- he had played Little Wing and other overly conventional stuff and they didn't pick him, but they regretted their mistake. Things like this happen -- everyone thought Coltrane was no good until Dizzy hired him, shocking everyone who had heard Coltrane earlier. I guess Dizzy could hear it.

Awesome!!!! Mayer is amazing as a guitarist but also as a songwriter and a sound designer.

Absolutely! There’s so much to be learned I’m going to have to go back to my own video and study that stuff! Not to mention, there’s lots of footage that I wasn’t able to include. Super inspired!
