I dont even own one ( really want to someday ) my dad ain't letting me by one because "I have too many instruments" ( I just have 1 digital piano, 1 keyboard, and 2 ukes and some other indian instruments ) but i do want to have guitar

Smells Like Teen Sprit is like the biggest and most basic example to this, the song's solo it basicly the same as vocal lines but it still works. That should be the ground if you are trying to work on that kind of solos. At beginning just create melody with vocals and try to play it on lower notes, as you progress, learn new stuff and have newer influences you will start to create better stuff.

That said, someone can sing anyone's solo. There's a point, though, where more credit goes to the singer and less to the solo and soloist.

Matt Bellamy was my guitar hero growing up. He can solo, he can move around a stage and really sell a heavy riff
I grew (and still am growing) up with him and he absolutely got me in to guitar, a true hero of mine

John frustiante, the man myth and legend who is always new and inventive when it comes to improvising solos. The man sure knows his way around a wah pedal.

Yeah, no. He's not what Rick is talking about as a "second lead singer". He's a shy introverted person and lacks charisma that Rick describes. Sure he's a great guitar player, but not great stage presence.

Totally true, for me I think he is some sort of evolution of Eddie Van Halen, very creative and had a deep understanding of his gear and techniques to achieved his tone.
I took my son to Nashville to see John Mayer with Ben Folds opening and it was among the top five shows I've seen. He reminded me a lot of Zappa the way he worked his band., and he was very generous with the spotlight.
Jeff Beck is the only guy I've seen in recent years that is still pushing the envelope and his band to new places, even in fifty year old rock songs.
I just saw John Mayer in Seattle 2 days ago. He's very, very good. He's kind of a Hybrid of Clapton, Hendrix, and SRV but with more diverse skills. I think he's reached the SRV level personally. When he improvised, he was also playing a combination of classical Bach and SRV pentatonic stuff as an intro to 'Gravity'. I think he's a combo of all these guys with a very diverse skillset. He can play folk, blues, funk, and seems to be getting more into classical/jazz riffs too. I love his unique approach to songwriting too. "Stop This Train" was an instant classic when it came out.
I think what makes John Mayer so good is that he really knows his stuff. Like, I’ll be watching an interview and he’ll talk about how he can’t stop listening to Miles Davis, then, I’ll see a video of him doing a solo where he’ll put some of that Miles Davis influence in there. The dude is passionate and I think it really shows in his playing
John Frusciante is a very popular guitarist, even among younger people. His solos aren't particularly technical or fast, but I think they are very melodic and "singable" (e.g. "Californication", "Scar Tissue", "Sir Psycho" and many other songs). Great video as always, Rick :)
And his backing vocals are world-class.
i hate to be the disagree guy but Mr Frusciante doesnt have a large following among young people. and that also depends on your definition of young. i love his playing, im 44 YsO now. every young person i know cant identify him by name. the guitar is, essentially, dead as of right now. can there be a resurrection? maybe. but it wont be until young people appreciate the value of music again.
I came here to suggest Frusciante. And there is a lot more to his work than the Chili Peppers. He's an amazing songwriter and his vocal harmonies and melodies are excellent.
He might not be top of the list today but mid to late 2000s he was certainly inspiring a lot of kids to pick up a strat

Just wanna mention Guthrie Govan here. Though he isn't a "guitar hero", probably one of the greatest players in the history of the instrument.

actually Guthrie fits the definition of great player working with great songwriter when he works with Steven Wilson. The best Steven Wilson solo albums are still the one he made with Guthrie as a guitarist. Guthrie's solos at Drive Home, The Watchmaker, Regret #9 maybe are the best guitar solos I've ver heard. But I think Guthrie just doesn't fit in bands except for Aristocrats (because its an instrumental trios). Playing to crowds and selling records are just not his thing. I think he just loves music and doesn't care about to be a guitar hero playing to million crowds. We have John Mayer and Ed Sheeran for that today. Guthrie doesnt have to follow that way, he has his own musical way.

Absolutely! Thinking the same thing. HUGE PRODUCTION stadium tours worldwide and the guy shreds with the best of em while adding tons of flair. And his guitar work isn’t simple - he’s got truly complex stuff, not to mention he made that touchpad midi guitar famous

I think Mr. Brightside was a huge hit with a lot of guitar too right, but idk if The Killers had solos. I'm sure Fall Out Boy gave Pete Wentz some. Jack White played big arenas with guitar solos. Prince.

Imo, guitarists have started prioritizing technique over creativity and sounding good in the sense that, guitarists would rather write a 300 BPM Sweeping tapping song than a melodic / catchy kind of song. I'm not saying that you shouldn't learn technique; it's the contrary, I completely and fully support advancing technique; however, I don't think that a song should be based around technique, technique should be based around the song. Technique is the tool and music is the machine.

Absolutely....couldn't have said it better. If you've written a great rock song and it showcases a guitar solo of sorts, it should always wind back into the song at some point and the song rocks on. Not the other way around; basing a song on the predominance of a guitar solo and then trying to construct some lyrics or whatever to follow along. There are some guitar 'greats' that did just this and in my estimation almost ruined rock in the late 80's early 90's. All about the laser light shows and the guitar solos......rock had lost it's blues roots.
In my opinion, there's such a lack of guitar in the current metal, that when bands want to focus on guitar it's almost like they're trying to overcompensate for the lack of the instrument and go over the top with what they do. Plini, Animals as Leaders etc., sometimes add complexity just for the sake of being complex.
Seems unkind to assume it's complexity for complexity's sake.
For me, Josh Homme was one of the last guitar heroes. Great riffs, great solos, great melodies and great songwriting.
Matt Bellamy is why I bought a guitar. Also Jack White, John Frusciante, and Tom Morello.

I could agree that Dimebag might be the last of the guitar hero's.
The real problem is today's music isn't about the music at all, its about the image, likes, shares and who you meet and collab with. Kids get told whats cool and what to listen to, there's no real discovery of taking a chance on a band anymore, most music is programmed, all flash and no substance. It'll happens in cycles though, people will wake up one day and wonder where all the good music had gone and start crafting their instruments again, just can't happen fast enough hahaha
If you are talking about pop music yeah, but popular music as a whole nah, it's still about music but instruments are now in the back seat.

if you mean todays "popular" music, then you might be right. But if we are talking about guitar orientated music, then you might be clinging onto to some out dated ways of finding decent music to listen to man. The radio stations are what they used to be , put in a little effort and go looking for some good music, you'll find it, it's out there, just not on the radio like it used to be...
Eric Clapton annointed him in an interview, he said that he thought that Mayer was the best guitar player out there. Also, B.B King and Buddy Guy welcome him as a "Made Guy". One thing he has that others don't have..range. He can play Blues, Rock, Pop, Disco, Polka, etc. etc. Has he influeced a generation of new guitar artists? Sure. Heck, it made me switch from electric back to acoustic with Catch this Train...I was like "what the heck is he doing with his right hand??".
Matt Bellamy has that quality. Showman, amazing skill and musicality.

Matt Bellamy! He’s got great showman chops but also loud, massive guitar work and guitar solos. Only thing is Muse dabbles in lots of genres and not just straight guitar rock.

John Frusciante, his solo work is exceptional. Also, Mark Tremonti. A wonderfully musical guitarist.
One of the last stars was Frusciante in the early 00s. His playing at Slane was everything described here.
Slane is the best thing RHCP did in their life.

Matt Bellamy is probably the newest Guitar Hero in my opinion, he sold out Rome Olympic Stadium in 2013, sold out Wembley Stadium in 2007 and recently sold out in France in 2019. He's also constructed some great solos such as Reapers, Blockades, Hysteria, Stockholm Syndrome, Psycho etc... The problem with his solos is that their a little bit too simple (the structure of Hysteria's solo is built on two parts that kind of repeat, the first part was repeating itself a bit too much and the 2nd part kind of did the same but they managed to make the songs solo sound amazing) but they sound great nonetheless.

A lot of Frusciante love here. I think people are so excited by his return not just because it will be classic peppers but because there will be a modern throwback on the scene. Someone who solos with emotion, feeling, intent and virtuosity.
RHCP is a band with some amazing solos. Really melodic. John Frusciante is a god when it comes to small very effective solo.
I agree . Frusciante is amazing with his RHCP work , but also he is a LOT overrated over here. Especially in the internet community. Still love him tho.

A ton of Guitar Heroes were missing. I'd even include Prince in that group. On the flip, I'd never include John Mayer in that group simply because he has not a single solo in his songs fans commonly refer to, unlike every other guitarist in the video .
@@conchobar His intial albums, probably because he started out as an acoustic-pop musician, didn't have many solos. But Continuum to present day stuff have memorable solos. His solo in 'Magnolia' is my favourite, not too complex but very memorable.
I just want to say that Omar Rodriguez Lopez doesn’t get the recognition that he deserves. Pure energy in lives and so creative and different in all his music.

I can't believe how underated still is Prince as a guitar hero...
He was an amazing player and his songwriting and voice were so strong and such a force that when people talk about him they end up saying he was an amazing musician because there wasn’t just one aspect that outshined the rest, he was amazing at each aspect of his work, for example Eddie Van Halen is an amazing guitarist and a decent singer/ songwriter but his guitar performance is for sure his strong suit. My point is your know for your stand out thing but tell me what princes standout was? His voice? Songwriting? His performance on his instrument? He was so good at each aspect you just say he was an amazing musician. Can’t box that guy in haha
With respect, I don't agree that he was an underrated guitarist, there's a reason why his performance on While my Guitar Gently Weeps has nearly 58 million views.
Rick has said this before, the only reason he doesnt put Prince, ACDC, etc. in his videos is because they get taken down instantly. He doesnt mind them tkaing the money from the vid, but if the video taken down he finds it ridiculous so he simply avoids it

I like his singing tone more than everything else honestly
While I know you have possibly some less-than-perfect thoughts about them, I really think that if we give Greta Van Fleet time to grow as a band Jake Kiszka really can fill that role into the next generation if they continue to grow popular in my generation. On the other hand, I really do think that people like Jack White are almost as much guitar heroes in terms of their personality and skill as those from older eras, but the popular status quo has shifted away from the guitar so much that even the most popular ones don't reach the broader public eye. I also think that there are some musicians who have been around for a while like Tom Morello, John Fruiscante, and Mark Tremonti who are also still making the best music of their lives, and should by no means be written off.
Honestly in my opinion Tom Morello is just shredding without much feel, I can’t listen to that stuff
I'd argue John Frusciante is semi-close to guitar hero. He has showmanship, iconic solos, great at improvising, sells out stadiums.
I would say fruciante is defiinitely a aguitar hero, but RHCP is from the 80's like the last of the guitar heros

Yeah, i do not play guitar really, apart from completely random strumming, but from my little knowledge i also figured ot would be Mayer, and i was so satisfied when Rick mentioned him, i felt like the goat.

Current guitar hero - Derek Trucks. I don’t care about flash or speed, I like lead guitar that takes you on an emotional journey. The Allman Bros, imho raised the bar when you have more than one lead guitarist in a band. It was about the music, not about “me”. But it’s all subjective anyway. I like filet mignon and others like beef jerky. LOL

@@steverix8181 the first song i ever learned on guitar was “In Your Atmosphere,” live in LA version. I was 16 years old. In that same live album, his rendition of “I'm Gonna Find Another You” has three fantastic solos that I really appreciate. To preface: I'm not actually that into guitars and know it quite casually. I've said about myself that I play guitar...well enough for me to sing and write songs hahaha. But since quarantine I've gotten deeper into the guitar YT rabbit hole trying to learn more, and it's been keeping me sane 🤘
He likes writing music that pleases people, but he is an amazing musician. Cheesy music doesn't say anything about skills.

Mark Tremonti - He's a bit understated in the "showmanship" category, but his chops and compositions are certainly just as good as any of the greatest guitarists ever.

His solo project is so underrated that's sad. None of these albums have a bad track in it to me, every melody is killing and i can sing by heart his freaking solos
And he currently plays with one of the finest rock vocalists alive, Myles Kennedy....who is also a phenomenal songwriter and guitarist in his own right!
Just posted the exact same comment... pretty ridiculous that Rick talks about internet sensations like Plini but never mentions Mark.
I was just going to say...yeah. He's not understated in showmanship, he fucking runs and solos just great. Myles is great too, but he also tours extensively with his own band, Tremonti, which literally makes him the gunslinger and the honey spitter both in those.
Slash is a real guitar hero. He plays melodic solos, he could grab audiences attention from Axl, even from Michael Jackson.
How was Angus Young left out of this??
I think Slash really is the last one. And he is getting better not worse with time.
Unpopular opinion: I think slash is maybe a bit overrated, he’s very experienced but I don’t think his improvising skills are that great, I mean look at the video where he played with John Mayer. Mayer definitely outplayed him
@@niekvanwensen Yes, musically not only Mayer but also there are many guitarists better than Slash. When is comes to attracting audience, influencing younger generations Slash is an outstanding player. He's one of the reasons for people who were born in the 80's to learn how to play guitar.

I think the last guitar heroe was Omar Rodriguez-Lopez... got his own way !! Saw him in a trio with Deantony Park and Alderete in a festival. One of the best performance ever seen... in the last 10 year at least..

Matt Bellamy especially. Talk about selling out stadiums, Muse is huge. Most of their radio songs have a guitar solo and it’s always got that Bellamy touch.
And nowadays for me the hero who represent all the greatest in his guitar playing.. Joe Bonamassa and I mean this decade of him playing.. but John Mayer?? Really?? I know he is good but is just POP with guitar.. check the latest album of Joe and I assure you that you can find real guitar playing..

Max Ostro, Mateo Mancuso, Tim Henson, Mateus Asato... All modern day guitar heroes. Haven’t gotten their arena shows in yet, but billboard willing .... they will.
There are so many brilliant guitarists from many many different genres but the sight of Stevie Ray Vaughan on stage ripping the notes outta the neck of his guitar is something to behold !!! 😍🎸👌

Prince had solos.
Prince was the greatest, yet Rick Beato never mentions him.
Prince was a great guitarist, could shine on his own or improvise in a group of others like the My Guitar Gently Weeps set he did before he died.
Prince was also an 80's guy so not really relevant to the "who's next" argument is he.....that and he's no longer here obviously!

I think Dan Auerbach is one of the quintessential guitar hero of our generation, guitar is usually at the forefront of any given piece, his lines are not to complicated but they convey the emotion of his music. Maybe my admiration is misplaced, but I feel like He’s the real deal!

yeah, I agree on this one. Good guitarist, good singer, solid writer. Problem for me was he got far too florid in some of his vocal stylings. He really needed to reign that in., and a good producer might have said something.

As a Muse fan, and judging on guitar ability, Matt was not very skillful, but very effective, because he is a master of riff writing.
I played in a UK battle of the bands in the late 90s and muse played in it. I remember him shredding quite a lot on an evh guitar. I don't think they won it.
Matt is the whole package.
Matt Bellamy? Huge worldwide arena tour, completely synonymous with on stage theatrics and playing guitar? Muse songs still have guitar solos, I think there was at least 5 on the newest album, and the old ones are still loved to this day
I hate the last album, but Drones is filled with good riffs and solos. Psycho, Reapers, THE GLOBALIST...
The point is having a guitarist that makes you want to play guitar, I don't think Matt does that. His solos don't really catch a lot of people. There's way for attention to his voice.

I rarely hear Jeff Beck getting love around here. If anyone is curious, his last album Loud Hailer in 2016 was incredible. Considering how long he’s been playing and constantly changing his sound, he deserves all the credit in the world. Every other guitar player from his generation has fizzled out but his last album still sounds fresh. Choice track is “Pull It”

I'm hoping "instrumental music" makes a comeback. There are many great bands that are using instruments in their music, and there are new bands that are using instruments like Animals as Leaders and Polyphia, but at the moment they aren't getting a lot of attention. Edit: Hopefully kids get inspired by bands or guitar players.

I’ve seen Tremonti live with Creed in a stadium, and a couple years later live with AlterBridge in a bar. Fabulous guitarist that I love to listen to. But sadly when Creed imploded his “reach” (using Rick’s word) crumbled with it.
I can appreciate their talent but Alter Bridge are so corny to me. All the ingredients are there but they have no edge whatsoever....more like Bon Jovi than actual metal.

he really doesnt have the influence. his playstyle is similar to pages in that it has that purposefully sloppy effect and is quite blues/pentatonic based but page got his crown for the influence, i dont see jake getting that unless GVF really blow up over the next five years or so

Guthrie put in some real solid solos on Steven Wilson's "The Raven that Refused to Sing and Other Stories" and "Hand.Cannot.Erase" albums. Solos from "Drive Home" or "Routine" as examples.

Tom Morello definitely rose to fame in the 90s. That's when RATM was active and big.
For what David Gilmour lacks in speed, he makes up for in feel, emotion, exquisite bends, and note choice. Gilmour is a one in a million guitar player.

1:08 hmmm well yes, he wasn't playing in that specific frame cause he was looping the rhythm he's gonna follow for the rest of the song. And there's actually Ed Sheeran songs with guitar solos like "Even my dad does sometimes" which has a pretty soothing and beutiful solo, maybe not as virtuoso or iconic as some legendary players, but it is still there. Ed Sheeran isn't by any means a guitar hero or a rockstar, he's a pop singer like any other, but there's charm in his performance and even though his guitar technique is simple and repetitive as fuck he's a great introduction to guitar for many including myself and I think that if you're a beginner you should definitely give him a listen, maybe he will inspire you as he inspired me.
John Mayer, you damn right. He is currently the only “active” guitar hero we have and I’m so glad you gave him those props. He’s really the full package, guitar god, singer/song writer, the full package! Please do a “what makes him so great” video. That would be cool.

Start with a great song. Then do a great performance of it. Finally, secure a great recording of it. That what made the Beatle great. Great songs. Sometimes their musicianship was overshadowed by the greatness of their songs. A great solo is like a song within a song.
I think John Petrucci was legit a guitar hero, especially during the 2000s. Dream Theater is perhaps too popular, but Petrucci actually managed to influence people.
Maybe Rick doesn't listen to DT. Songs like The Best of Times, The Spirit Carries On, etc definitely has some tasteful and singable solo. Altho Petrucci wasn't known for theatrical playing, he's inspired lots of people to pick up guitar.. and in some case made them give up entirely lol
@@Voltaphonic nah IMO Petrucci is the embodiment of "I have a passion so I need to practice my ass off in order to reach the level I want to" The early stories of Dream Theater/Majesty during and after Berklee are super inspiring to me.
Petrucci is incredible but he's not very known outside of the guitar community.
This isn't about skills only. It's about having the whole package where you transcend just being the lead guitar guy.

One reason why the players of Grateful Dead were/are so good in improvising, is that they learned to play their instruments under the influence of LSD. Bob Weir talked in a documentary about how the neck of his guitar would turn in to a snake.. Imagine playing that.. :D

My kids all listen rock 60,s through 90, heavy on the 80,s. And their friends do the same. They don’t like the bland music of today.
My oldest a Jr in high school plays guitar and sings in a GarageBand.
My 8th grader plays piano, drums and magically can show you how to play anything on a guitar even though he can’t play it. He is a big Kiss fan. I feel blessed to come home and be able to tell my kids to turn it up.

The 8th grader wants to be a college music professor. Every time he says this I think he must have got that from watching your channel. He does fit the role and is in track this year.
PS: The "I like solos that I can sing" section brought me back to the early days of me learning electric guitar. My beloved teacher told me that, he said that a great solo is not the one with the most notes on it. But rather, a melody so memorable that may stick in the soul of whoever listens to it, to the point it could be sung by anyone. You rock, Rick. You're the best.

@@mikejones-vd3fg Some of Yngwie's solos are over the top, but he has many that are epic. With beautiful, memorable melodies, and that inimitable vibrato that makes those notes sing.

I remember the moment I wanted to play electric guitar. Funnily enough, I was watching a Drake concert on TV and his guitarist came on and started shredding and I was like “that’s awesome, I wanna do that”.
