  • In my first video essay I cover a few of the reasons i think John Mayer is an exceptional guitarist. From his immense rhythm playing and how he incorporates that into his solos to his ability to never overplay.
If you enjoy the video i would really appreciate a like and subscribe, thank you for watching!

Most people don't also know that some of John Mayer's playing are inspired by Michael Jackson's vocal adlibs at the end of his songs.
Listen to the second half part of "The Lady In My Life" you'll hear how JM got inspired by MJs adlibs.

I agree with Eric Clapton, not even John Mayer knows how good he is. I listen to his solos more than any other guitarist out there because he is simply the best.

Remember seeing the video "where the light is" in the Blue Bar in Dubai many years ago and ended up staying way too long! .....had never heard of John Mayer - seen him live 4 times since. Awesome guitarist who doesn't let his guitar mastery overwhelm his great song writing.

Serving the Song! Thank you! Letting the Instrument Sing.... and letting it breathe. I was watching the Movie Heat Last Night with Pacino and DeNiro. That Movie also has Tone, Room and lets the Actors and Audience breathe.
I soaked up every John Mayer Life thing.... you go check out his lifeperformance on "come back to bed".
I always skipped the Performance with Kieth Urban...but now, that you have shown me the great sound on that, I will check it out! Thank you!

Enjoyed this. It would be good if you could do some analysis of other talented musicians who 'serve the song' as they are often overlooked in favour of more showy players. For example, Elliot Eastern from the Cars - an extraordinary & elegant musician whose playing so perfectly enhanced their songs.

Worth watching the Sammy Hagar interview with John Mayer, you’ll get an insight into John’s method of applying his own music theory and refers to his time at Berklee.

I think John Mayer is a glorified hack. His solos are retread mishmash of Hendrix and SRV licks. I have seen him live several times and have met him. He is a relatively good songwriter and performer and one thing is that he is polite and considerate to his fans.

Glorified hack? Isn’t every guitar player that then? Listen to SRV you’ll hear Albert King and Lonnie Mack..

the fact that you just used the word hack on one the greastest guitar players of the last 20 years makes you top ten fools on youtube. think about that statement. alot of idiots on ALL of youtube. you’re top 10
