I love the Dark Souls final boss arena. You’re expecting this massive fight with the strongest god in the land. Then when you enter it’s just ash and a tiny flame being guarded by the husk of what once was the strongest god to exist. But I can see why it would be underwhelming for some people.

False King Allant is not Demon's Souls final boss. The actual final boss arena would the worst one out any Fromsoft game, even though the location turns it into a really cool concept.
I really don’t like how Elden Ring did it the more I think about it. It may be pretty, but honestly I think I’d put it down below Sekiro. The way I see it, these arenas have two major components. There’s the immediate play area: the space you move in and the objects that decorate it. And there’s the setting: the background that you cannot interact with. The Elden beast has an empty play area. It entirely disregards the sense of scene. It’s justified in universe by being in a magical space, but an empty play area leaves it incredibly underwhelming and hollow. The setting isn’t much better, and for this I’m going to lean on DS3. DS3’s setting ticks all the boxes. The Elden beast fight is set in an empty universal light show, with nothing physical to ground it. Everything is skybox. The Soul of Cinder is set in the physically crumbling castles of the past 3 games. It feels so much more real because it isn’t all skybox, they’re actual game objects. You walk to the arena. You travel the area. The skybox is part of the setting, but not nearly the whole setting. The Soul of Cinder arena has so much literal depth. It has the immediate play area, a gorgeous graveyard of knights dedicated to the core of the trilogy, the physical area, the castles of the trilogy all crumbling, and the skybox, the Dark Sign covering the sun. The Elden beast has a pretty picture in the background. As nice as it is to think that you can make the boss itself shine, you need to remember that the arena is just an extension of said boss. When the arena is lacklustre, that reflects directly onto them. It’s really a shame the way that ended up, studios forgetting their own lessons.
When I saw there was an eclipse occuring at Lothric Castle I instantly knew it was a reference to Berserk’s. I probably never felt so good playing a video game
