Thanks to Lokey_DS, who I asked about the translation of the Japanese text. I probably wouldn't have noticed it was only one kanji away from the classical Japanese title of Sleeping Beauty otherwise. There's a very real chance that the people who wrote and approved that line only thought about it for roughly the same amount of time as it takes to watch this video, but it's a funny thing to consider. As one of Gehrman's students, it makes sense for Maria to be much younger than him, but definitively placing her as the youngest adds an interesting dynamic. Maria is sort of a midpoint between the first generation of hunters, who raided the Hamlet and committed countless atrocities, and the modern generation, who is suffering for those heinous acts without even really knowing they happened. Youngest of the Old Hunters, but still older than all the new ones.
Honestly considering the whole debacle with the PC "Deacon" from Days Gone and it's creator it's quite likely that there was no consultation done between the studios for references or jokes or even "permission" regarding any appearances.

This will go the Nier way: no new real games but insane lore drops in stage plays, obscure comics, FFXIV, a short-lived parallel-universes mobile game, and soundtrack concerts. Maybe talk to Square Enix and Nintendo and get Bloodborne into Kingdom Hearts and Smash Bros too.

This is really cool honestly - in some ways I feel like this might have been intuitively understood from the games story as it is Lady Maria being the youngest and potentially last to join the old hunters would make her the most likely to be the one with the most of her humanity still intact, and why she was the most compassionate to the medical ward patients, and regrets the fishing hamlet more deeply than anyone else. It also adds to her dynamic with Gherman. As the youngest she probably looked up to him as a role model of sorts. Which also adds some additional creepiness to the thing that Gherman had for her
I'm pretty sure she was described as his student in bits of lore related to her before the DLC came out as well, so yeah I always felt like her being the youngest, or at least one of the younger ones, made sense as well
I'm not sure to what extent Japan Studio actually contributed to Bloodborne, but seeing as they were basically reformed into Team Asobi (Astrobot devs), there are probably quite a few devs who worked on both BB and Astrobot.

She wasn't the last, the old hunters set describes that hunters were so common they were ten a penny, it's just that out of all the old hunters, she joined at the youngest age. As in, if you compare all the ages the old hunters joined, before and after Maria, she was the youngest. Unfortunately she also probably died at the youngest age. Presumably the old hunters became the new hunters when old yharnam was burned and the dream was made, so Maria would've died actually rather early in the history of the old hunters. The doll, made in her image, is also in the old workshop, before the dream, so presumably other old hunters knew about the doll.
Seeing as japan studio was involved with bloodborne I don't think it's crazy to think team asobi would have some extra knowledge of the bloodborne lore. But even then it's not like it really changes anything since youngest ≠ newest. Most of the hunters we meet are middle aged or old so it's really not hard to imagine the much younger looking maria was the youngest of the "old hunters".
Technically that wouldn't fit with the lore, as Maria's line is not referring to her corpse, but the corpse of Kos. In the hamlet massacre the old hunters also desecrated the corpse of Kos that washed up, probably to try and get blood. Maria felt extremely guilty about doing this, so she threw away her weapon into the hamlet well and started taking care of the research hall patients. She also probably killed herself out of guilt by slitting her throat because her neck is covered in blood. The grave where you find the old hunter bone is probably where she was buried in the waking world.
What I think is far more interesting, (and for more overlooked by just about everyone in the Bloodborne community,) is how the confrontation with Maria parallels a confrontation with Enma Daioh/the Yama, the Judge of the Dead in Buddhism who makes sinner face a reflection of their past sins using a cleansed crystal mirror.
i personally always assumed she was the youngest. im not quite sure why. Perhaps due to ghermans hidden affections for her and the fact that she does look so youthful in the dlc. so iwether its official canon or not, it falls inline with what i always assumed anyway :/

The "youngest Old Hunter" could not necessarily or strictly mean Maria's age. Maybe she's referred as the youngest because she was a newcomer/junior/last Hunter to join in the ranks of these labeled "Old Hunters"
Im almost finished with the game and it is perfect. It feels like a game from the good old days, overflowing with love and passion for videogames. I truely wish they would have never moved their HQ to California... That was the end for PlayStation.

Armored core 6's director was Sekiro's lead designer. Playing with a ACS damage build and pile bunker hit a lot of the sekiro notes for me at least.

What I think is far more interesting, (and for more overlooked by just about everyone in the Bloodborne community,) is how the confrontation with Maria parallels a confrontation with Enma Daioh/the Yama, the Judge of the Dead in Buddhism who makes sinner face a reflection of their past sins using a cleansed crystal mirror.

The "youngest Old Hunter" could not necessarily or strictly mean Maria's age. Maybe she's referred as the youngest because she was a newcomer/junior/last Hunter to join in the ranks of these labeled "Old Hunters"

Im almost finished with the game and it is perfect. It feels like a game from the good old days, overflowing with love and passion for videogames. I truely wish they would have never moved their HQ to California... That was the end for PlayStation.
