    It sounded like you wanted some suggestions about keeping warm so here you are: I wear a base layer and long johns against my skin, a fleece pullover, a parka/jacket and snowpants, an inner thinner wool sock, then a thicker one on the outside, snowboots, a thermal glove against your skin (anything warm will do) and a Gor-tex outer glove, and a buff of some kind. Also, carry extras of socks, hats, gloves, etc just in case.
    I like those socks in your video, I may have to grab a pair.

    About the gloves...in a pinch you can always buy oversize dish washing gloves any where n they are cheap and will water proof your hands better than a pair of Louis Garneau or pearl izumi gloves. This practice has worked for me really well when I was bicycle touring in East Armenia mountains in the snow. Sorry for the long message.

    Buy Icebreaker clothes. Made from merino wool and believe me the best. They also do not smell from sweat. This is what we use mostly here in Switzerland.

    This past trip to #Jilin tested the traveler in me! I thought I knew how to pack for winter based on urban/cosmopolitan travel. but I quickly learned winter wonderland activities and sightseeing are a different beast. (I suffered as a result).
    Today's video is based on my lessons about the essentials you should be considering if you're packing for a winter wonderland vacation.

      You might need your snow boots if you venture outside of Manhattan as a good amount of snow fell yesterday. If you stay in midtown Manhattan they tend to clean away the snow fast. The problem is really slush when the temp get higher and melts the snow. But we're just heading to the 2nd week of January so the temps should be close to freezing. Enjoy your trip.

    OMGosh! Cold just watching this video! I'm planning our retirement right now. As a CA and TX girl this was really informative!
    We're going to spend most of the time road tripping with a strong goal of transporting pets from high kill shelters to no kill ones. (eg: 200 dogs killed every month is some shelters in CA, but there are east coast shelters always looking for small dogs while in places like the Yukon there are better chances for larger hairy breed/mixes to be adopted.)
    Not looking forward to cold though, ack! Thanks again

    If you're going barehanded with just armwarmers a lot, try sport touchscreen gloves. They're thin, but they have a little rubber/silicon stuff on them, so they have some grip, and if the buttons on your camera/phone are tactile enough, you'll be able to use it with your gloves on. (I got mine at Costco by Head - these aren't a replacement for actual winter gloves, just extra protection if you find yourself with bare hands a lot.)

    Great vlog. I have the opposite problem though. I'm from Ireland so when I go travelling I pack for weather I'm use too. I was in Chiangmai for 3 weeks last October and I had to post back 5 pairs of long trousers, 3 long sleeve shirts and a coat because there was no way I was going to use them and they were weighing me down and costing me money in extra luggage allowances. To add to the drama, I had to buy more shorts and t shirts because I didn't bring enough.

    I hateee packing in winter because the clothing (just clothing, not even the amount) doubles in size. Trying to decide whether to bring snow-boots to Istanbul right now. It is snowing at the moment; but I think I will regret it next week, when it will inevitably not be snowing...

    • @grrrltraveler
      @grrrltraveler  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Zententia Yup. Layering helps to reduce the bulk and I generally avoid bulky sweaters. A sturdy winter coat is your principal player tho. You can kinda miss on others but that will be your bear hug and wind breaker.

    It doesn't surprise me about the silk underwear keeping you warm. I've seen guys wear women's stockings in the military to both keep them warm in the cold and also to keep "chiggers" (which are really really small bugs like fleas) from biting them in the out-of-doors.

    • @grrrltraveler
      @grrrltraveler  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +David Arnold Interesting!you just reminded me these might also help against bed bugs!

      Korea can get pretty cold, especially up north and Seoul. Luckily, they sell handwarmer/heat packs and winter accessories... in the case you forget anything! ;) Enjoy!

    Haven't imagined myself travelling for winter because well, coming from a tropical country, I know I easily get cooold. Although I really wanna see Taiwan (hopefully this year) and remembered you were quite freezing in the train so maybe I'll use these tips in the future! 😉

    • @samthepoet107
      @samthepoet107 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It snowed in Taiwan last year. And in Vietnam back in late 2013. So many people went to see snow since they never saw it before.

    Nice tips but I think the hardest thing for me will be dry sensitive skin. Cream alone may not help me so I may have to put on cream with urea/petroleum jelly!

    are the ugg really recommendable? don't they hurt your feet after walking for a while? and don't they get soaked right away bc of the snow?

  • @lzrdlps
    @lzrdlps 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video, though my experience with the snow is sunglasses/goggles, the sun reflecting off the snow is almost blinding.

    • @grrrltraveler
      @grrrltraveler  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Goggles are a good recommendation. Helps keep the snow out of your eyes in snowstorms.

    Hi! Great video I'm always going to cold cities and I love those uggs! Is there any chance you know what style they are called? I've been looking for a good pair of over the knee boots like that since they seem to fit the bill just having a hard time finding them

    Things made out of 100% will keep you very warm, it helps to regulate your body temperature and wick away moister. So wool socks, hats, mittens ect and if it is merino wool it won't be scratchy.

    Hello Christine, I am an adventurer traveler also, but I travel via motorcycle. I had a round trip adventure from South Carolina, USA to Panama the country via motorcycle (2 years). My tips are wear merino wool, it is good for layering in summer and winter. I also wear silk liners inside my gloves, and I am also a fan of waxed cotton jackets. One of my favorite websites is www.aerostich.com. check them out when you get a chance. I really enjoy your channel.
