But then I see an Audi RS3 getting a cylinder lopped off its count and lose interest completely.
Usage of EA888 engine is also about previous TCR's cars usage from VAG group (Golf, Cupra), where Audi was developed a little bit later. It's easier to use the same components, just like engine block for all of cars and what is more - these parts were already homologated. But it's not first situation where in same-named race car model there is another engine. For example, older GT-R GT500 versions from Super GT (highest Japanese GT racing category) had for example N/A V8 4.5 liter engine. But later due to global Class1 regulations, it was changed into 4-cylinder 2.0 liter engine.
In short, yes. After digging into TCR regs, it seems all cars must have a max width of 1950mm, so it's not as if the RS3's production bodywork provides some kind of benefit over the S3.
But why are they called RS3 LMS when they only have 4 cylinder engines? I would have thought RS3 LMS cars would retain the 5 cylinder engine from the standard RS3!
Doesn't Cupra develop the VAG TCR cars? And it's a shame we can have a 5 cylinder 2.0L turbo like the Volvo BTCC (bar the turbo) and have different sounds? But still looks awesome never-less
