How To Tell When Papayas Are Ripe + Storing Tips

  • In this video I explain you how to tell when a papaya is ripe.
    When papayas ripen up they turn from green to golden yellow or orange so the more orange a papaya is on the outside the riper it is.
    Ripe papayas also give in to pressure so once the fruit starts to soften up you know that you gotta get out your knife to cut it open.

    I'm trying to "get papayas right" so I don't wind up with wasted "meat." Thank you for your well-done video. No clashing noise. No hysteria! Clear well paced voice. I subscribed. All the best to you and Germany too.

    I love papayas, so this was quite useful. Will you consider making a video on the different varieties that you have eaten?

      Thank you! I mostly get formosa papayas where I live only when I order some more expensive tropical fruits I get wild papayas from Sri Lanka or Spain. No matter what variety, for me the most important thing is that they're fresh and juicy. 😋

      Hey there, great video! I watched it but didn’t see you mention where you bought these online! They look great! I cut up my first Papaya today before I saw your video and panicked thinking it was bad. In hindsight it was probably fine and I wasted it. Of course, I went out and got another one.

    What do you do if you cut one that is not riped yet?

    • @naturallyrawsome
      @naturallyrawsome  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      When I cut it open and it's not ripe yet, I eather eat it (if it's not too unripe) or put it in the fridge to let it ripen up a bit. But once it's cut open it's hard to let it ripen up. You could also put it in a paper bag and set it on the countertop but you gotta keep an eye on it so it doesn't get moldy.

    Can you please help me I have a green papaya and I never ate it before. It’s green and it’s hard still

    • @naturallyrawsome
      @naturallyrawsome  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      When it's completely green it usually doesn't ripen up well and will always stay kind of hard. When buying papayas there should always be at least one orange spot on the bottom.

    This was helpful. I just bought my first two papayas from the store and they are really gross. They were juicy but mushy and bland with a very funky smell. They were all yellow outside and not shiny, not orange but also not green so I don't understand where it's at in the ripening stage. Maybe they were not properly stored before I bought them. They are papayas from Mexico and I bought them at Walmart. I have had papaya in dole fruit mix and the they are in little diced cubes and they were firmer than this. I like firm paypayas and think I could fix the smell issue by putting in with my cut pineapple and maybe a bit if lime, but the papaya I cut today was far too mushy for that. I'm guessing that it is either over ripe and not a very naturally orange papaya, or if it was supposed to turn orange and not just yellow and dented all over, then it must have not ripened right but is now starting to rot. I don't know. I need to figure this out because I just love the firm little paypaya chunks in the dole tropical fruit cups but they are so hard to find and they only put a few in each cup. Last time I ordered them the delivery driver took them next door instead of here and my neighbor ate them. I know because I saw the picture of the door they dropped them at!

      Glad to hear it was helpful for you.
      When papapyas are super juicy they're also super ripe. Sometimes they get frim parts on the inside when they're overripe and old. Opting for the whole fruit is usually better than pre-chopped because sometimes they put preservatives into packaged foods. ;-)

      If you can I would recommend buying them either online like she said or even better go to a market. Not the store. Unless it’s a fancier store like publics/sprouts/Whole Foods. Ext

      That's not too bad. Over here they cost 6€ in the supermarket and 12-16€ online

      got one for $4 a kilo, weights about 500 grams so about $2 AUD. Can get them precut in half for $3.50 I think it was. So not bad. That's an advantage of living in the lower hemisphere.
