    Madam, your aesthetics are gorgeous - just everything. Love the list, It Follows is really the only one that I would've added to the metaphorical section, though I'm sure there are several you wanted to add. This October is a marathon for me, watching one classic/foreign horror film and one mainstream horror film daily. Keep up the good work!

    Marianna I had an interesting experience a few years back teaching film and media history to some rather sheltered home school students who had literally seen relatively few movies and no horror films at all. I approached it in an unusual way. Historically. One night I decided to give them a double feature of both Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein. It was stunning the effect these films had on them. While not quite in the zone of a 1930's audience, they were as close as I was probably ever going to get. They were genuinely frightened. And one teen girl was so disturbed by the implications of the Bride of Frankenstein that she was in tears. That to me was fascinating on many levels. (It says a lot about the level of imagery that people take as normal today.) I can only imagine what would have happened if I started them with anything on your list. When I finally did get to R-Rated films a year later, they had genuinely shocked reactions. But they were able to understand why by then. And they also were able to appreciate silent, black and white and foreign films without the usual complaints.

    I'm already into horror, but the movies that truly got me from being just okay with the genre into a real fan were the classics. Here are the top 10 that turned me into a genre nerd:
    Dracula (1931)
    Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
    The Uninvited (1944)
    Psycho (1960)
    The Innocents (1961)
    The Haunting (1963)
    Rosemary's Baby (1968)
    Don't Look Now (1973)
    Suspiria (1977)
    The Shining (1980)
    Obviously I tend to prefer older movies, it takes a truly special modern horror movie to make me a fan of it. I really liked "Color Out of Space" this year, but the last horror movie that I would put up against the classics would be "The VVitch".

    • @ImpressionBlend
      @ImpressionBlend  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm the opposite, actually. Aside from "Alien" and "Aliens" what really got me excited about horror were all of the early 2000s horror films I saw in theatres. Once I was hooked I started making my way through classics, which I'm honestly still in the process of - there are so many!

    • @aaronjames5276
      @aaronjames5276 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the movies that got me hooked on horror were probably the first three truly "adult" movies I ever really saw; all three in the theater:
      "Alien" (1979)
      "The Changeling" (1980)
      "The Shining" (1980)
      OMG, did this those movies scare the living hell out of me. Looking back, I'm not even sure now whether or not I should have been sitting in a theater, watching those at that age (about 10/11). Heh. :) I saw "Alien" at 10, with my dad. And at that age, at that time (before computers and home video and cable, really), I had just never seen anything like that. The environment, the characters, the whole thing. I mean, probably the "biggest" movie I had seen up to that time was "Superman."

    • @platonicdescartes
      @platonicdescartes 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ImpressionBlend Probably the formative difference is that I was already a major fan of classic movies and classic literature before I became a fan of classic horror. So they are the type of movies and books that I'm much more attracted to in general.

    THIS IS AWESOME!!! What a fabulous guide (not to mention idea for a video). Only two films you named that we haven’t yet seen: ‘Unsane’ and ‘A Tale of Two Sisters’, which we’ll add to the list. Truly, we echo every single comment that you make throughout about each film and sub-genre (and we think your observation on winter horror and how it relates to its characters’ inner darknesses is fascinating-totally true!). My better half also wants your shirt (which is awesome), and while it’s VERY hard to pick among your videos, this *might* be our favorite of 2020 so far (tho we also loved your videos on ‘Palm Springs’ and ‘Dark’). Everything about this one is so great. We also just decorated our house for Halloween, so this arrived at a perfect time 🎃😈👻😱🕸 Looking forward to more Halloween and horror videos!!! )) EDIT: another favorite of yours of 2020 is of course part 1 of films that changed your life-inspired us to make our own lists ❤️❤️

    For a person who actively avoids horror I‘ve loved quite a few of these: Pan’s Labyrinth, Black Swan, Tale of Two Sisters, The Shining, Let The Right One In, and Train to Busan. 🥰 I also watched Silence of the Lambs a while back, but somehow didn’t like it. 🤭
    Hadn’t heard of Unsane before: added to my list! Get Out was already on there. Thank you for this video! 🤗

    This is a great list for someone who may be skeptical about the genre. Also I would add that if they like Misery they should check out season 2 of Castle Rocky as well . Its centered around Annie Wilkes, and Lizzy Caplan gave such a great performance that even Kathy Bates tweeted how impressed she was with her portrayal ! Another thing I would recommend for fans of Samara Weaving In Ready or not , is the movie Mayhem. It has that same fun and bloody feel .

    As a Horror fan the reason why I love Horror is because nothing is left off the table, you can turn anything you want into a Horror film. I think Horror is the only genre of cinema that is free and uncensored of creative thought and expression, though some people have tried to put chains and censor Horror *cough Mary Whitehouse cough*. So that’s why I love Horror because it’s free and uncensored of creative thought and expression.
    As for films that got me into Horror, Scream got me into it and Scream is my all time favourite movie. But other films that I love and got me into Horror are The Shinning, 28 Days Later, Event Horizon, Black Christmas (original 74), Wolf Creek, Candyman, Cube, Suspiria (original 77), and Jacob’s Ladder (original 90). As well as my guilty pleasure Horror’s like I Know What You Did Last Summer, Halloween H20, Urban Legend, Valentine, Freddy Vs Jason, and Final Destination.

    Great video and list of films, Marianna. Really enjoyed that. And I really loved the mixture of fun and just entertaining films such as "Scream" and "Ready or Not" with stuff like "Black Swan" and "Unsane" -- two very disturbing, unsettling films.
    As a matter of fact, "Scream" is not only one of my favorite horror films, but simply one of my favorite films ever, of any sort. The number of careers, memes, classic lines of dialogue, and that first sequence alone make it in absolute, instant classic IMO. :)
    I had never seen anything like that and was just completely gripped from the very beginning. Wes Craven was such a genius.
    I definitely need to see "A Tale of Two Sisters" -- and thanks for reminding me of that. It looks like something that should totally be in my wheelhouse.

    Just now watching this video as a recent viewer of your channel, and overall, this is a really good list, although there a few films that I am embarrassed I still haven't seen (such as 'The Babadook'), I wanted to recommend my favorite "haunted house" genre double-feature (and, dear Lord, 'The Shining' is not one of the films because it's the most over-rated horror film of all time, and that's coming from a big Kubrick fan). 'The Haunting' directed by Robert Wise in 1961 was the very first adaptation of Shirley Jackson's 'The Haunting of Hill House' and still one of the scariest films I've ever seen. I put off watching the Netflix series for a long time worried they would do damage to it, much like the '90's film remake (which wasted the absolute perfect cast for that film), but ended up loving the series, and there are some great nods to the original film in it. The second of my films is 'The Changeling' starring George C. Scott from the early 80's. A fairly unknown horror film but so good with one of the absolute best seance sequences of all time. 'The Others' would make a great 3fer along with these two.

    Does Mother! Count as horror? I loved that, even more so than black swan. But if you are on the fence about Zombie movies watch the dawn of the dead remake written by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy).. it's excellent. also The Mist is a must see, it uses some of the classic hallmarks of the zombie genre (people stuck together in a claustrophobic place) but is not a zombie movie..

    Horror is so fun. Got to love the classics. As creepy as they are. My favorite is Halloween. But enjoy the cult classics like evil dead. Psycho gets me and the excorists. One of the weirdest and darker ones I seen as a child was mothers day. It's the realistic ones that seem to get me the most. Chainsaw massacre of course. Alot of horror movies had alot of comedy in them as well like friday the 13th and nightmare on elm street and evil dead series. But some movies were just 100 percent horror and evil. There are so many hidden gem horror movies.
