What can I say about this lady that has not already been said. You needed me, was my wedding song. If I had to choose two female vocalist to hear for the rest of my life it would be Anne Murray and Karen Carpenter. What a gift they have brought to the music world!!
Anne's voice soaring into the tranquil waves of the Pacific Ocean was the lone voice that connected me to the English speaking world as I go through my Pacific Cruise with the midshipmen of Chile aboard its training ship Esmeralda in 1980. That experience etched an unforgettable spot in my memory. I love Anne Murray's incredible voice since then until now.
I swear I can't wear this song out. Snowbird has a rhythmic symmetry that reaches really deep. All versions are good but there's no doubt it was made for this beautiful lady.
As a proud Canadian, and Nova Scotian, I can’t get enough of her voice....my mom actually went to school with her...and was blessed enough to be friends in school, but not that close....I always tell my mom she should have made a better effort!!! But years ago,during a concert here in Toronto, where I now live, she actually remembered my mom (I got front row tickets for moms birthday, as she adores Ann’s music). After the concert, as we were leaving, and mom was crying from hearing her hero, someone Tapped me on the shoulder and asked if we would like to meet in Murray! Like I had to be asked, we have course said yes, so this guy starts leading us backstage to her dressing room, it says that Ann wanted to say hello to my mother again, and actually remembered her by name, even though they hadn’t seen each other for decades! Sure enough within a few seconds we were in Annmarie‘s dressing room and my mother and her were hugging and crying, and ended up having dinner together, so they could talk about the good all days back home! Compared to my mother, I’m not that huge of a fan, but I’ve always loved her voice, however I did not want to interfere with that evening, my mother having a chance to sit down and have dinner with an old friend who just happens to be one of the biggest artists in the world? Things like this just don’t happen, but it did! I was asked to keep it quiet, at all though Ann Invited me to come along as well, I did not want to be the third wheel, and spoil my mothers opportunity to catch up on old times with a dear friend, not to mention a chance of a lifetime. So I simply gave Ann I kiss on the cheek, a hug, and of course a few pictures, whispered in her ear “thank you so much, this means the world to my mother”, to which she responded “no, it means the world to me to have a friend from back home, To share dinner with, instead of going to my hotel room and eating alone”....... can you believe somebody of her stature just sits in that hotel room eating by herself, as she jumps from city to city for months at a time? I thought they would have thousands of people chasing after her, but she’s always kept her private life very very hidden. My mother had the time of her life, I was actually getting worried, the concert finished at 10pm...Even though I took mom to dinner before the concert, how could she say no to Ann?, so I just thought they’d have a quick bite, and I told her to call me when she was ready to be picked up, it was 1 AM and I still haven’t heard from her, and I was just about to hop in the car and go to the hotel, but I got a phone call from Mom saying she never wanted that night to end but she was really tired going to come pick her up. When I got there, guess who standing right beside her as she waited? She has got to be the most down to earth celebrity I have ever met in my entire life, and I’ve met many many celebrities having worked in the music industry, and also in the security industry for many years. I got out of the car so I could say one last goodbye to Ann, Even though she invited me up for a drink before I left, I just had to get to work the following morning at 5 AM, and it was already past 1 AM. I was so PO’d! The one chance I had to talk to a celebrity one on one, and I couldn’t take advantage of it, But the main thing is my mother had the time of her life that night. Even though that was at least 20 years ago or more, neither of us will ever ever forget it, and to this day my mother never stops thinking me for it. I just thought we were going to have dinner and watch A concert, I had no idea we were going to watch a Concert, and then Be invited to spend the rest of the evening with one of the worlds biggest stars! It never fails, once in a lifetime opportunity happens and I couldn’t take advantage of it, but I was so so happy that my mom was given an opportunity very few people will ever have. Even though my mother is now 87, and still going strong (there’s just something about people from the East Coast, we just live forever, and the baby in the family, the oldest person is 105 years old and still living alone!), She still constantly talks about that night, I think it gave her a lot of bragging rights, especially because her other childhood friends refused to be friends with Ann, I bet they’re sorry now! LOL! They even exchanged phone numbers, but over the years, they lost contact with each other, because life happens and gets in the way. I just wish there was a way I could reunite my mother with Ann once more, Especially now that Mom is beginning to slow down, although she’ll refuse to admit it, I can tell that her age is finally catching up with her, and I know it would mean the world to her to spend a couple of hours more with Ann. I’ve tried but it’s damn near impossible to get a message she’s such a high-ranking celebrity, and understandably so, I can only imagine how many people are dying to meet her in person. The one strange thing is that Ann is actually much younger than my mother, my mom comes from a family of 14 brothers and sisters, which was quite common in those days, and because mom had to help out on the farm, she never had a chance to go to school until later in life, so she was always much older than her classmates, but I think it was just meant to be, If she had gone to school when she was supposed to, she never would’ve met Ann, and she never would’ve had the dozens of incredible opportunities that she was given because of her age at the time. It’s just a perfect example of how in life everything happens for a reason, even if it seems bad at first, even sometimes devastating, something good inevitably happens from it. Who am I kidding? I would love to see her again too, because those pictures that I took with Ann, were completely destroyed in a house fire several years later, keeping in mind this was long before the Internet and digital photography. I don’t even know why am telling you this, I guess just to point out how down to earth this starreally is, and how closely she guards her private life. She asked me when I was picking mom up to please not tell anybody about that evening. She told me the last time the same thing happened in Boston, when she saw a good friend from her childhood sitting in the audience, the next day the press made that poor friend of her’s life a living hell, desperately trying to get any and all dirt on Ann as they could! The media are pure evil sometimes, now I understand why so many stars guard their private lives fiercely against the media. But I feel it’s safe enough to tell you this because enough time has passed, but it really was a night I will never forget, and probably the day that made it absolutely impossible for me to ever top that birthday gift to my mother! LOL! But seriously, she truly is a very very humble lady, very sweet and loving to her was that she knew and knows, and it’s true, what you see is what you get, she has no hesitation in speaking her mind, and is not pretentious in anyway whatsoever, a typical east coaster from Canada trait!

I remember in 1969 my Mom worked a CBC and she got tickets for the Tommy Hunter show before the show Mom introduced my sister and I to Anne I was 9 years old then I will never forget it I’m 60 now
