Take my life and let it be - arr. for piano by Peter Duckworth to tune 'Mozart'

  • I used to shrink from this hymn, by Frances Ridley Havergal (1836-79), on account of its severe demands - so I thought - to give up all that I thought pleasurable in return for an ascetic life of service.
Now, many years later, I don't see it this way at all. Instead, I have learned (and am still learning) that the only way to find fulfilment on earth is to live by "every word that comes out of the mouth of God". That way, as he promises, we shall "inherit the earth" - not by amassing an earthly fortune, but by finding out what life is really about and experiencing it to the full. In these circumstances, why would I not want to pray, "Take my life and use it for your purposes"? It is the most exciting thing imaginable.
The rather sweet tune is variously attributed to W.A. Mozart and to a contemporary of his, the Czech composer Wenzel Müller (when, for obscure reasons, it goes under the name 'Nottingham'). Certainly in terms of simplicity and balance, It is after the style of the great composer; albeit I incline to the view that, just as the works of classical painters were imitated by their disciples, so this tune was put together by an admirer of Mozart rather than the man himself.

Peter, as well as being a Christian believer and barrister, I am also a piano enthusiast so I'd love to know more about your grand, which even over the internet has the sound of a good one.

Dear P1959H, could you share your name? It's good to know we are bearing witness to the legal profession.
My piano is a Schimmel 6'10", made (I assume) in Braunschweig, Germany and purchased ex display from Harrods 35 years ago for £10k. It's been my pride and joy ever since. I think they are underrated as a make, and for my money, it was a better instrument than a Bechstein that was also on sale in the same showroom for £24k.

@@peterduckworth4901 I'm Paul Hart - in chambers in Preston doing public law children work. That's a fine piano you have. I have found that some of the names just outside the big few are at least as good and can be better. I've had a Steinway upright and a Bluthner small grand, but for the last 10 years have enjoyed a Sauter Masterclass M130 that is wonderful and as our youngest has stuck his name on it will remain in my study for some time to come! Would be great to keep in touch.
