Literally played a game like that. It was our first game of D&D ever. Our dm had skim-read the rules, then got a bunch of other random shit off reddit. It was insane and hilarious.
I could see Wizard having Magic Missile as their every turn ability, but all of their other spells can effect multiple targets, benefits over multiple turns, and/or be creative. And be a true wizard glass cannon by having 1 less HP and need to be protected. For instance, something like Sleet Storm would fit the esthetic of what Ray of Frost tried to do that wouldn't be wasted on 1 HP targets. If the chat member wants to have a lot of fun, they can dip into one of a few different once per floor spells, but if they're overwhelmed nothing wrong with spamming Magic Missile. Although, all that said, I'd hope for each subsequent stream to feature a different team of three classes over immediately returning to these three being tweaked. Return to this party after forming a cast of all the other classes. My thoughts on the wizard are also in retrospect only. If returning to the characters and assuming they get to keep any of the reusable equipment, probably wouldn't fit now anyway.
yeah I think it's a perfect balance of 'abilities that you'd expect them to have' and 'funny traits', the wizard still had a ton of character despite their bland abilities because they spent half of their time kickflipping off of things, yet they also stayed extremely relevant because of their consistent damage.
Oh, one thing that could make an arcane spellcaster really entertaining in this kind of format is giving them Mage Hand. Maybe if there's an Artificer they could use that for even greater wacky results if tied into their artifice. Also give them Mending and have their only thing to rely on is weapons and items when their limited use abilities/spells run out (can see the Infusions feature as a per floor or per player, and telekinesis spell as per floor or per stream, for instance), so they'd have to be inventive to compete. ...Guess that's just saying have an Artificer that plays like TotK? But more MacGyver leaning? Anyway, similar points can be made for Druidcraft, Prestidigitation, and Thaumaturgy, while Thorn Whip is always fun as an attack under normal circumstances, but would need to be modified for the majority of foes having one HP (maybe only being used for pulling, or still pulling when the damaging attack misses?).

I think it would have been kinda funny if one of the chatters was a massive dnd nerd and just started spouting rules and actual dnd actions that most of the chat would be entirely lost on.

I'd argue that the Ray of Frost should stay, but be modified in this following way: If the player hits an enemy (alive or dead), that enemy becomes part of the terrain (so they are an obstacle). Imagine that a big enemy is downed and the Wizard uses the corpse to block further enemies from going through that path. Also I'd make it so that, when not aimed at an enemy, it can create a terrain hazard, making a portion of the ground icey and slippery.

I agree it'd be helpful to keep the abilities available at all times so new players do know they still have the terrifying presence and bigger abilities if these streams become more regular, maybe a link to a pdf that lists how the simplified game works once someone jumps in. Even the basic rules are very simple and intuitive so anyone can drop in and roleplay, barbarian is good in melee and damage tanking but lacks range and leaves himself open, bard is a strong support and charisma based hexer, and mage had most of the ranged abilities along with an illusion and later developed the kickflip as a melee option. If he really wanted maybe have some abilities be 3 per floor so you can use them more often but not be as game breaking, again it takes some theory crafting to balance all this, and make the ultimate abilities that are limited by the stream have much longer effects. More interesting enemies would be nice but still be easy to understand, maybe an enemy that splashes aoe trails rather than trails behind, play with their mobility. The roomba was really good but the party was mostly dumb and still made it through a tough encounter.

Honestly giving the wizard stronger abilities, but only 2 health might be a good idea too. Maybe give the barbarian illiteracy, just like actually D&D would be good too. Great video and video idea btw. I kind of wish I had thought of it myself.
..... you're right. We need another dougdoug rpg session like this, but better. Disneyland is a good setting.... maybe a circus of Hell as another one.... or a gigantic, evil, demon filled McDonalds.
I feel like barbarian should keep their double attack once per floor move but also give them another once per floor sense it’s weird he didn’t have a second once per floor.
"Ray of frost" could just be "cantrip" where you "create minor magical effect or make a basic magical attack" (where of course, you must explain the nature of said attack)
Improvised weapon: Might be very situational but I could see a monk able to use anything as a deadly weapon as a passive or just instinctively grabs items off the shelf as projectiles. But that could get replaced if they grab a nailgun off the shelf which is also just always a ranged one hit weapon with good potential. Inspiration/Mocking: Maybe combine these into one skill for simplicity where any roll can have advantage/disadvantage if the viewer can make a good one liner, separate it from vicious mockery as the primary skill based attack but it's also easier to throw onto other characters as a bonus action. That could make the chat more noisy but also encourages a bard/paladin to roleplay more. Ray of Frost+: the slow was useless but how about if it misses it still applies a slow or makes them vulnerable to other attacks. I could also see it paired with Ray of Fire, more likely to do damage, or Ray of Fear which doesn't damage but will more likely cause an enemy to lose a turn or flee. I like an artificer themed item craft ability that throws bombs or other improvised weapons made on the fly. Summon animal: could be very powerful, probably once per floor where you either summon a companion from a list Doug has or can justify on the floor. How about anything Doug needs to photoshop is once per stream or roleplay reliant. Summon squirrel upto wolf is frequent but summon any beast like a hippopotamus out of the blue can only be done once. Teleport: just as boring but more useful and interesting than a guaranteed hit. Lesser Polymorph: lets you change yourself into a mundane object/animal once per floor while the greater once per stream polymorph is effectively an instant kill or can stun larger bosses for multiple turns if Doug wants them to stick around. I think the game is very customizable so I hope a lot of the themes get written down for people to start crafting their own custom characters for streams. here's a take on a Rogue class: sly and cunning, joined the party in the hope of riches, is an ex-lover of one of the party members OR owes one of them $50 and refuses to pay it back Hide in shadows (every turn) - for half their movement they are now less likely to be hit, if not already in combat Doug will choose a different target, if already engaged it will still reduce their hit rate by like 2-4 points Treasure Hunter (1 per floor) - during combat they have a better chance to find items, afterwards they are guaranteed to find something of great value (within reason), either use it during a fight for something plain or hold out for like a golden chainsaw they can share with a fighter. Trick Stab (3 times per floor) - uses their movement to go through and around an enemy and backstabs them, high chance to damage them but could leave them vulnerable Stroke of Luck (ONCE PER STREAM) - any roll can be turned into a nat 20, anything is possible with the rule of cool but it's also very limited [it feels less powerful than other room clears or boss killers but they're also loaded with other abilities]
Blaine, I'm planning on making a homebrew character that's a dragonborn but it's basically a living emerald, part of a very rare species that were hunted for their cores, the glowing crystal spheres that contain most of their magical energy and are the main force keeping them alive (there's a lot more details but I don't wanna spend like 30 minutes typing for no one to read it) If you wanna hear more and have any tips for me, I'd be very happy to hear them.

..... you're right. We need another dougdoug rpg session like this, but better. Disneyland is a good setting.... maybe a circus of Hell as another one.... or a gigantic, evil, demon filled McDonalds.
Doug: “Na polio.”
Wait a second... per turn (at will)... per floor (per encounter)... per stream powers (per day)... this is just D&D 4e! Doug you have tricked us all!
Ok your book you were promoting Immediately reminded me of spirited away, and moving castle
I watched the video for the second time before this and it is just *amazing*
I feel like barbarian should keep their double attack once per floor move but also give them another once per floor sense it’s weird he didn’t have a second once per floor.
with how the roomba was abused i was hoping the bard would recruit it so bad. make it turn against the evil washing machine.
don't forget the complex relationship between bard and wizard
The crossover I didn’t know I needed.
"Ray of frost" could just be "cantrip" where you "create minor magical effect or make a basic magical attack" (where of course, you must explain the nature of said attack)
I mean, hey, players did canonically have only 1 brain cell that they shared around
it be fun if you attempted a game in this style since he open sourced the chat player tool he made
I hope theres a next game!
Love the omega strikers ost in the background!
I think the game is very customizable so I hope a lot of the themes get written down for people to start crafting their own custom characters for streams.
here's a take on a Rogue class: sly and cunning, joined the party in the hope of riches, is an ex-lover of one of the party members OR owes one of them $50 and refuses to pay it back
Hide in shadows (every turn) - for half their movement they are now less likely to be hit, if not already in combat Doug will choose a different target, if already engaged it will still reduce their hit rate by like 2-4 points
Treasure Hunter (1 per floor) - during combat they have a better chance to find items, afterwards they are guaranteed to find something of great value (within reason), either use it during a fight for something plain or hold out for like a golden chainsaw they can share with a fighter.
Trick Stab (3 times per floor) - uses their movement to go through and around an enemy and backstabs them, high chance to damage them but could leave them vulnerable
Stroke of Luck (ONCE PER STREAM) - any roll can be turned into a nat 20, anything is possible with the rule of cool but it's also very limited [it feels less powerful than other room clears or boss killers but they're also loaded with other abilities]
This breakdown made it not fun and too serious. I wanted to get more in D&D but this immediately killed it.
Doug is doing a new so concept today
Blaine, I'm planning on making a homebrew character that's a dragonborn but it's basically a living emerald, part of a very rare species that were hunted for their cores, the glowing crystal spheres that contain most of their magical energy and are the main force keeping them alive (there's a lot more details but I don't wanna spend like 30 minutes typing for no one to read it)
If you wanna hear more and have any tips for me, I'd be very happy to hear them.
They did use the ability to chase back the Hot Pocket
