    Picked up a hitchhiker years ago down south, he was travelling to a remote 'commune', I naturally asked him about his travels.
    He mentioned some cool places and for food he often shot wild game.
    Then he proceeded to open a bag and show me his .22 cal rifle, all the parts were inside the wooden stock. He even took it in a bag on planes. Just amazing.
    Oh and the commune was full of pretty young girls, clothing optional, poor guy.

    I used to have an early 1970s version, and it was slightly different. The sights were standard open sight and made of aluminium. It had no optical rail. No plastic, but the butt was made from fibreglass and was in jungle camo colours, not black. It's unlawful in a lot of places because it was extremely easy to change from a semi-automatic to a full automatic. Handy close range rifle, but not too good for long range, and perfect for shooting rabbits and similar small animals.

    I've been shooting my henry AR-7 for 3 years now and I'll share the 2 main concerns I have about the rifle. 1: It really likes high vel rounds. CCI Stingers are really the best way to go with this weapon. 2: It comes from the factory fairly gritty. Many say it's like there is sand in the bolt. I suggest looking up on youtube how to completely disasemble your AR-7 and lube all the parts. The trigger group and bolt action will be SO much smoother if you do.
    Take care of those two things and you will have yourself one fun little rifle. It's great for people like me who just like to have a rifle on hand while going out camping without worrying about messing up a high end rifle (like an AR15) or taking up too much space. All and all I would recommend the AR7 to ANY outdoorsman who doesn't currently carry a sidearm.

  • @rogerhudson9732
    @rogerhudson9732 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I used to have one of these as the AR7, used to carry it in my rucksack but when 'military' semi-auto rifles were banned in the UK after the Hungerford massacre (1987) the word Armalite meant it was banned. The banning law was already written and waiting. I found the CCI Stinger was great for small British game, rabbits etc.
    A great very useful gun, where you can have one.

      @Ivan_Powrosnik ปีที่แล้ว

      Under the amendments it should be legal if it’s .22 LR or .22 WMR, “military style” just meant any other calibre (oddly including .177 HMR).

    I'm a older man that has owned two of these Henry survival rifles in my life. I loved them both, but when I was a younger man I was always trading in my firearms trying to experience every guns I could. However, in my older years I would advise you against doing this, specially if you get your hands on a Henry survival rifle like this. I let my Henry survival rifles get away from me and I100% regret it. Get your self one of these gun and hang on to it. They are one of the most compact accurate 22 rifles I've ever owned.

    James Bond - The AR-7 was in both From Russia with Love and Goldfinger movies, and was scoped in both. Where do you stow the scope? In addition, Q pointed out that 007's AR-7 issue was in .25 Cal., so it must have been a special make for the MI folks. Also we learn in Live and Let Die that a Smith and Wesson revolver has a safety catch. Those spies get all the good stuff.

    I had a 70's era model of this, an actual Arma-Lite AR-7 Explorer. It was given to me at 13 and was hands down the MOST fun and interesting rifle I've ever owned. Mine had a solid barrel, which is probably a good thing since I easily put 2k rounds through that thing. Never lost any accuracy, although it developed a tendency to jam after the 3rd or 4th round. If I had known then how to clean the action that probably would have stopped. Thanks for the vid and the memories, always loved this rifle.

    on the note of not dry fireing. forgive me if someone already posted this. if you pull the bolt back about halfway. you will feel the pressure on the bolt, you can pull the trigger and slowly release the bolt forward so you do not dry fire or damage the pin.

    • @RobertHartwigphoto
      @RobertHartwigphoto 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Robert Maybeth The problem was not the rifle but the poorly made mags made by Charter Arms. I own one made by Armalite made in 1967 and seldom had jams if used with decent ammo. Try several brands and one will work very well. Mine loves Winchester Wildcat. The mags made by Henry have solved most feed problems. If you own an AR7 built by Charter Arms or Survival Arms but Henry mags and your feed problems should be a thing of the past. NEVER buy after market or extended mags (15 round)

    Firstly Armalite made the rifle first for the USAF as a survival rifle ( designated AR-7 or automatic rifle 7) in 1956 ..it evolved from bolt action to over and under to semi-auto.. Charter Arms took over production from 1973 -1990 ( I have one of those and the ONLY problem I experienced was a feeding prob due to an after market 25 round mag). Survival Arms came into the picture from 90 - 97 and finally Henry from 97 to the present. Great video Fred! Your style is fantastic. Keep it up dude

  • @jshicke

    The original AR-7 was notorious for rounds hanging up on the feed ramp due to misalignment of the feed. When the design was sold to Charter arms, it had the same problem. Firing all 8 rounds without a stoppage was rare. Henry Arms apparently fixed the feed problem when they purchased the design from Charter Arms.

    Knew the James Bond reference, Bond's rifle was supposedly in .25 caliber had a wood stock and infra-red telescopic sight.. It was also used in Goldfinger by Tilly Masterson (Tania Mallet) when she tries to shoot Goldfinger in the Swiss Alps. Bond remarks about the guncase she has, saying he has one just like it. Tilly replies that it is for ice skates.
    It is a nice system. I added an all steel barrel, supposedly increases accuracy. Also picked up after market M4 stock/pistol grip combo to evaluate.

    Over the years I was thinking someone should make a field strip video for the AR-7. I made one with a web cam but the video quality was total crap and my mic didn't work so I didn't know till it was all finished recording. Glad to see there is a good video out there though. The AR-7 is surprisingly simple compared to other automatics I've field stripped, but if you don't know what to do it can still be confusing.

    I owned a Charter Arms version in 1985 and loved it. Had it and shot it for many years and it was surprisingly accurate. But I sold it and always wanted another one. So, I bought a Henry version, hated the plastic outer barrel. Within the first 50 rounds the inner steel barrel separated from the outer plastic barrel and pushed out the end a mm or so until the firing pin would no longer reach the round to fire it. It went back! But I still want another one when I can get a better barrel for it.

      I can't really look around your neighborhoods - I live in Australia. Here's a fun multiple choice question; How many massacres has Australia had since the introduction of gun control in 1996? Is it a) 12, b) 9 or c) 0 ? Ill give you a hint - it's less than 1. If this impingement on my freedon means I can send my kids to school without the fear of being gunned down I say "good". If only you people would excercise your right to vote as passionately as your right to own guns you might not be in this predicament.

I have recently ordered one of these through Davidsons (Gallery of Guns) and I feel that I already know it because of your excellent instructions. The thing about dry firing .22s is that the firing pin might damage or get damaged by the barrel.
    If the barrel isn't in the gun, neither of those can happen.

    Very reliable because it is very simple. The barrel is 16 inches. Factory magazines hold 8 rounds. It comes with 2 magazines and Henry sells spares for about 20 bucks each. 3 magazines will fit in the butt stock if you leave one in the receiver, so you can have 24 rounds stored inside.

    Got out and shot 100 rounds of bulk ammo through it with no hiccups at all. Was shooting a bit low, so I raised the back sight up and it zeroed right in. At 15 yards, I was hitting in the bulls eye ring all day. So easy to put together and take down and very easy to clean. The trigger pull is a little heavy, but tollerable. Very light and just plain fun. I'm a left hander and it's like it was made for me! I'd say Henry certainly worked out the bugs in this little rifle. Good to go!

    There are three things you need to know about this rifle.
    1. If you buy spare magazines, make sure they Re "Henry" magazines. The old style will not work with the Henry.
    2. This design has been owned by many manufacturers through the years. I have owned AR-7 rifles from two others way back when, and the older models are still floating around at gun shows and whatever - beware of them. The Henry version is by far the best version.
    3. There are tons of accessories you can get for the AR-7. The great functionality of this rifle is that you can fit the whole thing with three full mags in the stock. If you do anything that breaks this functionality, the rifle will have lost its usefulness. You might as well have started out with a scoped Ruger 10/22.

    I wish they would change the design of the butt pad so that it flipped open and stayed attached to the stock. There is also a lot of room they could utilize to store more ammunition in the storage area.

    I have one of these except mine was made by Charter Arms. It has to be the biggest piece of junk I have ever owned. It jams on almost every round unless you use CCI Stingers or Minimags or occasionally Winchester SuperX ammo in it. It was given as a gift by my dad a little over 20 years ago. I think he paid $67 for it brand new then. On the other hand, I have heard good things about the Henry version. Good video.

    I shot one of the original Charter Arms AR-7 explorers extensively in the 80's. I can spot a number of differences in maufacturing, it's like this version is the new plastic version of timeless tonka trucks. That pin at the base of the barrel does not exist on the original version and neither were the barrels coated in ABS...they were steel. The pin was a elongated lobe that was a part of the barrel and fit exactly in the slot. The bolt was left bare metal and not blued. And only a single clip fit into the stock. The sights were different as well . There werent the picatinny rails that you see on this model. A very differently made gun, and in my opinion superior to what you have there. The automatic repeat fire works very well and i heard tell of a simple mod to make this little critter automatic but I've never done it. I can tell you from single repeated shot and an added 100 round clip ( which was available in the US but not here in canada, unless your parents were peace officers like mine were) that that barrel absolutely GLOWS red after a very few shots one after another. This gun is very capable of putting a large number of holes into something you point it at in one hell of a hurry.

    @TheHiddenPart I think that's sometimes called emergency orange. The idea is that it's very easy to see even near darkness. Give it's purpose built construction as a survival gun, the bright orange is a plus. It means that the rifle could be assembled in near darkness, and front sight will also stand out better in the dark. I suspect that the easy to move sight means it's meant to be replaced, or more likely the gun will need to be re-zeroed frequently (aka every time it's assembled).

    The reason i ask for a full strip is because in mine i have a case ejector that sits just under the magazine release lever in the receiver. This thin piece of metal means that for cleaning the bolt for a field strip is not possible as the ejector blocks the path of the bolt. I can send photos. i think i might make a video at some point for a full strip and tips for putting back together. Happy shooting Fred

    This is a great little rifle. I am always surprised at the accuracy of this thing. My wife and I love to plink with this at the range. Instead of a target, we aim at little things (leaves, etc.) on the back berm of the range. We hit it every time!

    Remember that the AR-7 was originally intended to be part of a bail out kit for pilots and aircrew to harvest small game when rescue was going to be more than a few days away, so weight was probably a consideration and they probably thought that 8 rounds was going to be enough. (Original Armalite, and Charter Arms AR 7s only had provision for only 1 mag in storage). Now, the USAF issued M-6 single shot .22/.410 survival rifle has butt stock storage for 14 .22 rounds and 5 .410shotgun shells

    I just wanted to thank you for this video! I just picked up one today at a VERY reasonable price! Mine also came with a 15 round clip. The field strip was great to know. All I need to do now is figure out a way I can attach the 15 round clip to the stock since it won't fit inside, thank you again!
    Take care.

    @MrDubblejinx It works great for left handers. As a matter of fact, the way the barrel is canted to the right, I believe it's easier for a left hander to aim and shoot. The barrel is off set so that it can fit nicely into the stock. The way the rounds eject, there is no danger of any hitting you in the face or going down your shirt coller. I love it!

    I remember when this was made by Armalite AR7 in the 70's & 80's. Only had 1 magazine then. Bought it as a "survival" rifle because it fit so easily in my back pack and l could carry a couple hundred rds of .22 cal. Without the weight penalty of a larger caliber.

  • @ThaMasterSniper
    @ThaMasterSniper 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good point, firefights usually happen within the range of a good .22, but if I were in a fight I would want a bit larger caliber just because of the knock down power. And that's a good combination, if one jams or runs out of ammo you've got another, and they're both good for different things. You can't fight close range very effectively with a sniper rifle, and long range with a short range rifle. It's always good to have a bit of variation.

    Very similar to my Charter Arms AR-7, tho I understand that not all parts are interchaneable. Nice improvement having extra mags & room for them in the stock -- mine didn't have that. Mine also has the aluminum barrel "cover" rather than the plastic one.
    I have some recollection that a standard hi-capacity plastic mag will fit these, but I don't recall the exact brand.
    Excellent firearm, and a real bargain. Of course mine was about 90 bucks back then.

  • @EdOfTheNorth
    @EdOfTheNorth 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent presentation. I purchased mine in the 70's produced by Charter Arms and after thousands of rounds it is still functioning like new. The one you show actually looks a lot cheaper than mine. The barrel and sight on mine is an aluminum alloy. Mine is also loaded with styrofoam so it floats. Highly recommended as a small caliber camp weapon. 35 years of service proves that but I have seen them with destroyed barrels due to abuse from rapid fire heating. Anything can be wrecked by idiots.

  • @lswasserm1
    @lswasserm1 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    When Charter Arms made these back in the 80s they were inaccurate, jam-prone and after shooting a few hundred rounds, often got so bad that they would consistently fail to feed after the 1st round was fired. I hope Henry has successfully resolved these problems.

  • @Roarmeister2

    I asked Henry Arms if they were going to make a 17HMR version. They replied that they looked at making the 17HMR, 17HM2 and 22 mag versions but decided against it. I also read that 17HMR ammo in a semi-auto is not advised so that may have been one of the reasons why.

    I had my AR-7, since the mid 1970's and it was the best $79.95 I've ever spent! I never considered putting a sight on it because it would be an extra part to carry, but it did get two extended mags for it. When "Exploder" rounds were available OTC I used those and the were awesome!! But 22longs in lead OT HPs are still the best survival ammo you can have and this wonderful little rifle is compact, will float and never jams-it's too simple to jam-up. The ammo for it is as cheap as dirt and plent

    The trivia question at the end stated that the AR-7 was used in one James Bond movie, "From Russia With Love.". Correction. It was also used in "Goldfinger" by the sister of the girl that was killed by being painted with Gold paint. She tried to kill Goldfinger with the AR-7 from a mountainside and again from a Forrest in the hills.
