I work as a licensed handyman in the PNW. Work has slowed down for me as well. I spent many years being booked out weeks and sometimes months in advance but about a month ago things seem to drop off a cliff. Currently I am booked out a week in advance. The work is still available but it is trickling in at the last minute now. Self employment is an excellent way to live. I have many children who are still young enough to live with me. I take the entire month of July off every summer to vacation with them because I can write my own schedule. I drop them off at school in the morning and am usually home from work by the time they return from school. I almost never wake up dreading having to go to work for the day. I take immense satisfaction knowing that I am a useful man to my community and enjoy my day's labor. The work is so varied that I don't get bored, even if it's the 12th toilet replacement of the year. I'm a new subscriber and appreciate the direct talk you provide!
I am a housepainter in Belgium and i really understand what you are saying. People dont want to use their hands anymore. At the otherside... I love to work with my hands and always try to give my best service to the customers. Its always a win-win situation.
I was a limo driver for over 25 years. Drove an engineer for NASA that worked on Hubble space telescope. After project was done, he became a handyman!! He said he was happier now than ever
Spot on many trades get the same treatment as handyman do.. Painters drywallers siding guys or any smaller type contractors who don't own brand new stuff.. It ain't what ya got its what you can do with it that counts. I've been q contractor for over 35 yrs and can relate to everything you just said. Your a sharp man stay focused 👍
Love it man!!! I'm in E Mesa doing the same thing. We could meet for lunch, lol. I hate the handyman label but it's a great job for me after working for electrical contractors for years.
You are 100% correct about laziness. I remember in '78 when an uncle bought a truck and started cutting grass during a USS steel strike. He didn't make as much but got my cousin and me as 'free labor' on weekends. Today he has some multi-million deck/shrubbery/snow firm but gave it to my cousin cause he's old and tired. My cousin hired out immigrants and paid them under the table and the business took off crazy in the 90s. But lots of handymen aren't bonded/licensed so if they get hurt on your property you lose your house or you try to sue them for bad work and no recourse.
My grandpaw was born 1902 and when I was ~12 he told me people will never do with creature comforts (indoor plumbing - electric - automobiles ), NEVER. Know how to do this and I would always be able to make money. He wasn’t wrong and I’m a proud to be multi-craft Tradesman.
Decades ago, there were skilled carpenters everywhere and labor was much cheaper. Houses were works of art. Now that the trade is dead, handymen have to fill the gap and can charge a lot. Supply and demand.
Been a handyman since 08 best choice i ever made theres absolutely no service i cant provide just use your brain and hands youll achieve everything just by hard work and common sense
