My favorite charge nurse when I worked in the ED was a 5’2, maybe 110lb when wet, delicately beautiful woman with the absolute sweetest disposition… until you copped an attitude or dared treat one of her nurses badly. She could fire off a stream of profanity laden threats that would make even the neurosurgeons sweat, stammer, and apologize. I’ve seen her stand toe to toe with a big suddenly belligerent patient, staying between him and her team while security was still on the way. That woman was steel and fire, and an absolute angel of a friend 🥰.
Man I miss those ED days. Closest crew you could ever hope for.

That's all our local charge nurses 😂 I think that particular set of characteristics is a part of the job description. I watched this 4'8 and 6 month pregnant charge nurse at a local hospital go toe to toe with a 6'6 jacked psych patient that literally threw one of the hospital security guards across the main ER nurses station. That patient was absolutely terrified of her and there was a very tense standoff between them when she stood up off her exercise ball...

@@kaine2416 “when she stood off her exercise ball” 😂. Oh man, I swear that’s a prerequisite cause many of ours had them too.
The maternal power of a woman protecting her crew is an incredible thing to witness. I would fault no nurse for not engaging, but jeebus, when the crap hits the fan, I knew that crew all had each other’s backs. Steel dispositions, get shit done attitudes. And led by the bravest tiny generals in the entire hospital.

I’m a gen. surgery resident and just completed 2 years (the unwritten rite of passage from the bottom of the barrel to someone that matters) and cant believe how universal some of your character portrayals are. You hear some of these so many times in the OR that they become background noise. (My favorite is when the surgeon gets frustrated with the incision they themselves made too small to move comfortably inside the abdomen and shout at anesthesia that the “patient is straining!”)

I was in surgery as a 3rd yr medical student when the surgeon dropped the scalpel. I knew he’d be pissed and the next time I did anything wrong (retractor holding, suture cutting etc) I’d get yelled at. So I said, “I’m sorry!” The surgeon looked at me puzzled and said “Why are you apologizing for that?” I said, “I’m the medical student. Anything that goes wrong is my fault.” He laughed and situation relieved, making me safe from getting randomly yelled at. Needless to say I went into a non surgical specialty, Internal Medicine & Infectious Diseases, because I didn’t fancy getting yelled at. 😎

Had his friend run to get a nun nurse yelling "the baby's coming out already, help!" The nun runs over to the bed and lifts up the sheet and sticks her head under it. *gasp* "Charge nurse!" I've had many surgeries. Lots of hospital stays. As a experienced patient, yes... Accurate. I had a charge nurse threaten to break my fingers once. I was just back in my room after surgery. Still drugged. I wanted to see the incision, so I was picking at the dressing. This Viking warrior woman came into my room. Big, tall, 2 grey braids over each shoulder. Honestly, she was only missing a horned helmet to finish out the Viking look. She saw what I was doing and her first words were, "you keep picking at those and I'll break your fingers." I loved her instantly. She was great, no nonsense, no filter, awesome care, tolerated no bs. I couldn't get away with anything. Trust me, lol I tried. Never mess with charge nurses.

Omg that was my charge nurse my first few years in nursing we called her the “queen of restraints” and she was known for getting the violent patients back in bed before they hurt themselves. She was short, overweight and in her mid 60s, ex military. She wasn’t even interested or looked like her HR hit above 70. “Nope back in the bed” to brain tumor patients trying to open windows to escape or “no we’re not doing that sir” to a large bloody naked man threatening her life at the station. She didn’t give a shit. Security knew Deb would likely have their back and keep the patient safe until they came to their senses.

And just about ANYTHING that go wrong in OR can be blamed on anesthesia, who are my most favorite medical practitioners. I have always thought just as much or more consideration should go into the choice of anesthesia as your surgeon.
The surgeon is focused on their little scrubbed area of work. The REST of the body's function and maintenance belongs to anesthesia: heart, lungs, kidneys, brain oxygenation, safety etc.
I've had two major surgeries in my life and I wasn't afraid to request my anesthesiologist of choice. Or tell the surgeon who would never be allowed to touch me. One surgeon I even told her if so-and-so walks into my room I will get dressed and leave!! My request was honored.

This is awesome. I had surgery in August and the Anesthesiologist couldn't find a vein in me(related to my medical condition but he pin cushioned me!). An hour later and my normally super nice surgeon was getting really antsy with Anesthesia. When the Anesthesiologist angrily demanded that someone turn that music off, I was getting a little nervous because it had been so long and I had holes all up and down both arms. Then Anaesthesia was wrenching a tourniquet around arm number one again, so tight I thought it was going to cut through to the bone. I must have inhaled, because my surgeon came over, put his hand on my shoulder and was like, "I will get someone to find you a warm blanket!" while glaring at the gasman.

Actual argument between neurosurgery and anesthesia when I worked in the OR. “Anesthesia, it’s hot in here” “It’s 60 degrees.” “Can you turn down the temperature?” “I CAN, but I won’t because I really don’t want to give the patient, myself, and the circulator hypothermia”

This reminds me of a charge nurse I met who was a retired Army Master Sergeant. If you don't know what that is, but have met a Sergeant, a Master Sergeant is a master of everything sergeants do. It usually takes about 15-18 (though 8 years can happen in some specialties) years to earn, including picking up a Master's Degree (but the degree subject doesn't have to have _anything_ to do with the job . . . just _a_ master's degree). Do 20-30 years to retirement, then get a "real" job where you have to pay your own rent and insurance, possibly for the first time in your life, but you are no longer personally responsible for 50-300 lives day-to-day and personally responsible for 500 million to 20 billion dollars of hardware -- in other people's hands!
