    I don't know, but I hope Jinhao appreciates all the good (and rightly deserved) publicity it gets from some TH-camrs. More from some than others. They should like make unique color collectible pens to give as symbolic thank you gifts to their biggest fans. Like, throw a bunch of unique colors to make a special one of a kind barrel or something that only some special people get.

    When I got into the hobby a few years ago I heard about Jinhao pens and nib swapping. I got a 450 and 750 but found the nibs to be better than expected. Nevertheless I constantly swap nibs for different writing experiences and to test ink samples. I recently ordered a Jinhao Centennial (Orange Red) with a medium nib. After flushing and inking it I wrote a few words and thought, "This is one of the BEST nibs I've ever had!!!" I spent a few hours writing, testing, experimenting, etc. I almost finished the ink and decided to clean out the pen and try a different ink. I started with J. Herbin Eclat de Saphir and switched to Sailor Jentle Black. WOW again - generous flow but not too wet, almost buttery smooth, reverse writing was excellent, scribble and swirl stress test (passed with flying colors). I have even more respect for Jinhao than before. I realize it is like the lottery - sometimes you get lucky. I certainly hit the jackpot with this nib! If I have to make a criticism it would be the almost 3 turns to uncap the pen. But this is such a small detail and doesn't diminish the pen at all.

      Hi Andrew -- I was just looking at my big section of Jinhao nibs in my little plastic nib container. I really need to revisit them now that I am more experienced with both inks and with nib smoothing. The X750s are my favorite. I have yet to see a Centennial. Wow - that's big finding a nib on a Jinhao that's a best ever. I like that!

    Hi Chris 😊 This is refreshing change! I ordered the Monteverde Innova today. It comes with its special edition ink Innova and I got another free bottle of ink. The Innova is a special edition celebrating Monteverde's 20th anniversary and is numbered. It will be a fun day that day when it gets here. Keep making videos! You have a gift for it!

    Who doesn't own a Jinhao fountain pen? A very affordable way into the hobby and to see them laid out on your table makes them look quite beautiful. Obviously we all know they are inexpensive, yet they do look nice and can be relied upon to actually work. One of my favourites is the Jinhao 51a. Another is the 992. I keep a X450 permanently inked at work and love it! Your spreadsheet is a great idea but I am too lazy to keep something like that updated.

    I found this video very helpful. Thank you for showing how to categorize your fountain pen collection on Google sheets. I started making an inventory list old school in a notebook. Upon seeing this I like to try to make one for my pen collection & one for my ink collection. It is useful to have and almost easier to make inventory lists on Google sheets.

      Hi JL I'm really glad this was helpful! This is the first time that I have done real spreadsheets (the ink and this one) I've always typed lists which become quickly outdated and also I did a spread in my bullet journal. I'm especially excited that it's web based and won't get lost if I have computer failure! I found it fun!

    I learn something every time I watch your videos. Today, your video affirmed that it’s the metal pens and the demonstrators pens that I like. I know I’ll get matchy about inks and pen bodies if I’m not careful. I also realized that I’m not terribly interested in collecting lots of pens. I want a nice set of finely made, comfy, and reliable pens, but beyond that, it’s the ink I’m really attracted to. I’m completely bored with regular pens and I’m jaded with how wasteful regular pens are. I hate tossing out all that plastic! Fountain pens attract me because they are more eco friendly. I’m attracted to refillable markers for the same reason. So, I will almost certainly get carried away with ink exploring color and how I can spread it on a page. My goal in watching videos before I buy is to understand how inks, nibs and paper work together so I can explore the fabulous world of ink to my heart’s content. Your channel really informs me, so I’m grateful for all you are sharing here. You are truly saving me money!

      Hi Yvonne -- this is so good to hear because I just love doing the PIP videos - showing which Pen Ink Paper combos have worked so well for me! :) I find anytime I try to generalize about inks or paper or pens it's not accurate but by focusing one very specific dynamic combinations - that's where we can really cut corners to excellent matches!!!! :)

    I am a big fan of my Jinhao pens. They have all been good writers. I prefer my 159 for letters (mainly because of a disability I have difficulty with not dropping thinner pens, and the weight doesn't bother me) but my personal favourite is the acrylic 51A I have with the Bobby nib. Even nicer than the standard 51A which is a regular use pen as well.
    I have a "few" Chinese pens (around 40 at last count 😁) and I've started on getting versions of the very first fountain pen I had that I really liked, the Esterbrook lever fill pens (my old grey J was a better writer than even the gold nibbed one I had back then, and it was vintage as well) as my fixed income allows. Very nice to see your collection!

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Paul - those Jinhao 159s are very comfortable for writing! I was surprised because they are very heavy but super nice to write with!

    • @paulherman5822
      @paulherman5822 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrisSaenz13 Doesn't mean that I have abandoned my first love for the vintage Esterbrook pens, but I have been very pleased with most of the Chinese pens I've gotten (except for the Hero 616s...) Most have been good straight away, a few (mainly the Lanbitou copies of the Wing Sung 3008) have needed a bit of nib smoothing, but so far, I've been happy.
      I especially like the Jinhao and Wing Sung pens I have, but Wing Sung doesn't make a broad enough nib for me, for writing letters, and Jinhao does (the only nib swapping I've done, so far, is in my Esterbrook pens.)

      Hi @mellow-jello oh that Jinhao X159 would be so great in my opinion if it either took a #6 nib or if the nibs were more consistent that come on them .... the pen body is phenomenal! I have 3 of them now and one writes great but still not as good for me as my #6 JoWo nibs write for me. Maybe some company will start making #8 nibs up to the similar standard to the #6 JoWo ones. :)

    Lucky for me, I don't have the fountain pen virus; I only have the nib virus. I want to have (nearly) every conceivable (steel) nib. My 17 "first string" pens have covered the spectrum pretty thoroughly. Along the way, that has accidentally included a few duplicates that are useful, one being wet and the other dry. Also along the way, I have accumulated 9 low-end "bench" pens, since replaced among the first string by something better. As of today, the two pens I want to buy are at the extremes: a Sailor with a posting nib (PO), and something in the BB/BBB/C range. They both seem to be rare and too expensive. I've managed to stay away from gold so far.

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ichiro - oh no there's a nib virus too ... along with the pen and ink ones ... lol ... I have to admit I'm always hoping for more Goulet nibs but I too have stayed about from Gold nibs except for my one Pilot Vanishing Point and a 2 pens which were gifts to me in the vintage category! :) Jinhao is the largest part of my collection ... I really went wild in this brand with all the beautiful colors! I guess the low price fueled that too!

    Great video. How you are doing well despite Corona Virus outbreak in this world of ours. I have 29 pens of various brands mostly U.S, German, Taiwanese and Japanese.
    I Bought the Jinhao / Wing Sung Lamy Safari copycat pens in the early days of my collection and the barrels broke. So I decided to give up on the Chinese Brands despite the good nib experience and price point.
    Not buying any more pens despite all the pretty pen colors and new designs coming out. Debating about buying a RANGA PEN from Pen Chalet for around 80-100 dollars EBONITE PEN (don't have 1 yet) before the discount with free ink.
    Just can't to decide on the ink color and pen barrel color and nib size.

    Nice Jinhao collection and spreadsheet, Chris. I began puting a spreadsheet together last summer, but I haven't kept it updated. I made the mistake of including pens, inks and notebooks. I have too much paper and too few inks to bother with keeping track of. This has motivated me to edit my spreadsheet and just keep an inventory of my pens.

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Cathy! I think as long as I keep ink and pens separate I can keep up with the sheets. The one thing that really is difficult for me is the ink samples - I am considering inventorying the blue and purple samples on separate sheets just so I can easily say if I have or do not have a particular one. It's a "unique to ink reviewers" problem I think. I should ask Adam (An Ink Guy) how he manages his. :)

      Hi Mary - I remember the hesitation and nervousness I had in swapping nibs the first time. The nib and feeds on the 159s are very sturdy though and I've never harmed one. I use the green lobster band as grippy. Don't be discouraged ... the first time you pull the section/nib out it can be a little snug but it gets a bit easier each time you "pull" them. Good luck and let me know how it goes when you try it! The section pliers are very helpful too especially for the heary pens like the 159, X750, X450 I don't recommend them for the #5 size nib/feeds.

    I feel that the Jinhao is underrated. No, it not the Edison, Montblanc, Pilot, Platinum, etc, etc, but it
    does provide a nice writing experience for those who do not have deep pockets to invest in this
    hobby. With micromesh & shims, you can really smooth a Jinhao nib, and some do not even require
    smoothing when you get them. My newest Jinhao 159's nib was very smooth, so I put my micromesh
    back into the cabinet. My collection has well over 275 pens.

      @@ChrisSaenz13 : It's fun until you have to clean 100 pens you have been using! (LOL) I've just
      completed doing just that over the past 3 days. My fingers had blue, green, purple and red
      ink stains, and were waterlogged.. I had to clean these before inking up another batch of
      pens to use. Girl, my pen collection is small compared to some folks who have up to
      2,000 pens. I often think to myself if I used a different pen every day, it would take me 275
      days to get through my small collection before starting over with the first pen.

    Great video as always Chris! May i suggest you "freeze" (or whatever google is calling it) the whole top row as you did with the A1 cell in the fountain pen spreadsheet? That way, as you scroll down you can know what aspect of the column you're looking at! Just a suggestion, it's your spreadsheet and if you understand it better, more power to you! God bless you and i cant wait for the next video with TWSBI and Lamy!

    Hi Chris,
    I can totally relate to the temptation of colour, be they in pens or inks😊 I only have two Wing Sung 3008 as far as
    Chinese made pens go. One leaks the other has a wobbly
    piston. I am also not able to fit the Lamy nib. Anyway, I was not sure wether to buy pens that are obviously copies of say a Twsbi, is it
    ethical and all that, I am not
    sure really...
    Totally looking forward to your
    Lamy and Twsbi pens🤗🌼

      @ChrisSaenz13  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi tanja - oh I'm sorry to hear you had bad experiences with the 3008s. I totally understand the ethical question on the pens. When I look at other types of products (non pen) like purses, shoes, even cars it helps me put it in perspective. Even Traveler's Notebooks. :) One thing I forgot to say in the video is that inventorying is the first step in eventually taming this collection - first I have to know exactly what I have and why. LOL :)

    I've got various Jinhaos (too many!) and the other week I took some to the charity shop. Today I was searching for the silicone grease (which I've still not found 😂) and I came across a bag of 10 brand new Jinhao 992s all in different colours. I certainly do not need any more 992s and I'm not sure what possessed me at the time to buy so many more 992s than I already had.......maybe it was for all the different colours 😂. Anyways that's another batch of pens that are destined for the charity shop. Definitely pen fever when I purchased those 992s😂😂😂😂😂. At the moment I don't think I will be compiling a spreadsheet of my pens, because eventually I will be getting rid of a lot of pens. By the way it doesn't bother me what colour of ink is in a pen.

    Which of your Jinhao’s do you think would be best for someone with arthritis? The 450 looks comfortable?

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tammy -- the X450s so have a very comfortable weight and grip. I don't like them as much as I do the Jinhao X750s. Here's why: I find the X450s are not as consistent - I've had quite a few of both models and the X750s don't dry out or have issues like leaking whereas in my experience the X450s seem prone to those things.
      If you can write with a heavy pen the 159s are comfortable for me and that is shocking to me given my love of light weight pens.
      Hmm ... I'm not sure which one you'd find the best but as time goes on I have avoided buying any more of the X450s although other people have had fairly good luck with them.

    You got to be really lucky. Because everytime I buy these Chinese pens, their paint will faint or something. The outer layer of metal will fall apart. It happened twice and I stopped using them. I rather buy some indian or japanese pens.

    In your opinion between the 159 X450 and X 750 witch one is for favorite ? I’m thinking about getting one

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mike -- For me my very favorite is the X750. Followed by the 159. The X450 I've had more mixed results - I still like them but they seem to require more tinkering in my experience. The X750s are a great size and balance and I always swap nibs in them so I can't speak about the stock nibs since I use Goulet or other #6 replacement nibs. The 159 is a comfortable pen to write with even though it's so large/heavy. Unposted of course. The X450 is VERY comfortable to write with (if you like a suggested grip) it has a contoured partly triangular grip so keep that in mind. I just find that I end up with more of those that require trouble shooting for leaks and dry outs. Other people do not complain of that so much so it could just be my luck. In my opinion you can't go wrong with the X750.
