who else convinced yourself to buy a metropolitan because it’s said to be “more economical” down the road and ended up spending thousands in fountain pens
I inhereted my first fountain pen from my dad he got it as a graduatian present from his grandparents. It's 50ish years old now and it still writes like new I love it.
My mum bought me my first ever Goulet pen for Christmas, I think it was called Monteverde and a load of ink samples and I'm so happy it's so beautiful and smooth and I am in love
OMG I lost my voice over the New Year too. Hours of really loud Karaoke and laughing uncontrollably. Love seeing your FP collection. I've been collecting since I was 17 (28 years)!!! I have over 100 Fountain Pens and counting!!! Wheeeeee!! That VP Twilight makes me drool every time I see it. I kick myself for not buying it when they were available. You've inspired me to do a few sharing videos on my FP and Ink collections!! Thanks for the inspiration.
I love fountain pens and I really enjoyed this video. I need to buy a case like yours. My collection has outgrown the nice wooden and glass case I was given by a dear friend. I can't go to my favorite art store, Sam Flax, without buying a new fountain pen. I look forward to your other videos in this series! Glad you are feeling better.
It was so much fun seeing your fountain pen collection! Thank you for the great video! AND I have you to thank for the joy and fun I now have with fountain pens -- because when I was getting in to bullet journaling (October of 2016) and watching a lot of your videos -- you mentioned your fountain pens & at that time I didn't think I'd be able to "figure them out" -- because I remembered some frustrations with them when I was younger - but you encouraged us to watch Brian Goulet's fountain pen 101 videos -- well the rest is history!!!! So thank you!!! I now enjoy writing with fountain pens and I enjoy the awesome bullet journaling and fountain pen communities!!!! I look forward to your upcoming fountain pen videos very much!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!
I just have to say!! It's all your fault! 😝 I am now addicted to fountain pens!! ❤️❤️❤️ you talked about them in one of your 30 days my bullet journal series! And since then... there is no going back!! Thanks for sharing you collection!!
One big advantage of the Lamy FPs is that the nibs are interchangeable. Originally they come with steel nibs ranging in size from Extra Fine , Fine , Medium , & Wide. However, you can purchase gold nibs for these pens. They cost around $100 and come in two color variations: Z57 nib: Black surrounds the gold slit. Z55: Silver surrounds gold slit.
You have a BEAUTIFUL collection. I'm sure it's grown since you originally posted this. I have just started collecting, even though I bought my first (cheapy) one about twenty years ago.
Oh my goodness, fountain pen envy! All of your pens are so gorgeous. You were actually the one who got me into fountain pens through watching your bullet journal videos, and I am so grateful because I love them so much (I might be addicted, haha). I can't wait to watch the rest of this series! I'm also glad you're feeling better, being sick is no fun.
I'm in love with teal/turquoise too, so I've been really happy that so many pens have been coming out in those colors. I'm insanely jealous of the Stipula. But that Copper Mule really is the gem. I'm such a fan of Jake's - how wonderful that you can carry his work with you!
Wow, amazing collection of Fountain pens. I smirked a little at you mentioning how some people have issues with holding the Lamy Fountain pens the right way and how you likethe way it forces you to hold it right. That's exactly the reason why the grip is shaped like that; it's how we in Germany learn to hold a pen, not only fountain pens. I wonder if there are differences between Germany (Lamy is a german brand) and the US. 🤔
Ok have to say just how much I loooooovvvvveeeeeee your fp collection, I’m so looking forward to your videos on them👏🏻 iv just started collecting fp’s I only have 6😱but I need more (my husband thinks I’m mad🤔) thnx for sharing xx
I did not intend on watching this whole video but once I got started...I couldn't stop!! You talk about each pen so lovingly it makes me want one of each too!!! But for now, I'll have to settle for the three I have and save up for more ;-) Thanks again Kara for being so willing to share everything with all of us
I smiled when you showed your first two pens....they were mine too! Only in reverse order! I love them so much, I have a stiff budget ( focusing on retirement goals) that I can’t decide which will be my next purchase. Probably a Lamy or Twsbi.....so I will watch the rest of your videos to see which makes sense.
that is an amazing collection and I totally get why you got hooked! Thank you so much for sharing your collection. New subbie looking forward to seeing the rest
you have a very nice collection. I started after you but it really is amazing how quickly $100+ very quickly doesn't seem unthinkable to spend. so many great pens out including limited editions plus all the great vintage pens. have you considered any vintage pens?
aw, watching this make me want to write with fountain pens again 😍 in Austria (or maybe just in my school?) we actually learnt writing with fountain pens and I remember having some lamys between elementary and high school, before I ended up switching over to normal ball point pens ☺️
Lovely collection Kara....but i totally don't know anything about fountain pens although i would love know and fall in love with it so plz a beginners videos about how to use the foutain pens, how to hold and maintain them... Thank you so much ❤
LAMY Al-Star Pacific Blue is a Special Edition, not Limited, just wanted to point out, bc I also have one. Your collection is oriented towards turquoise it looks very nice you have many of the Holy Grail pens I want. I enjoyed this video, actually my very first video from your channel
I absolutly love this video!!! Im a huge sucker for fountain pens. That is How I found you and Bullet journaling. I found Goulet pens on TH-cam and Brian intervjued you. This was in april last year and the rest is history as one could say. My dreampen is the Montegrappa copper also and the love for it increased 1000 times now 😂🙏🏻 Thank you for a lovely video. ❤️ Xo xo
I really wanted to get the Visconti millennium arc moonlight but when I got into fountain pens it was already discontinued. Visconti is such an innovative, beautiful brand with great pens. Im thinking of buying one of their northern lights (very exclusive as well!)
It's obvious the colour is the important thing. Try a Jinhao 15 in midnight blue. It has a waistline look They have hooded fine nibs. It could broaden out your collection to have a Chinese pen.
It’s a must do in school to learn how to write with a fountain pen in first grade in Germany I miss to write with those. Which one would you recommend to get when starting out? ❤️
I do work in a stationery shop in Germany and what I would recommend is, that you go to a shop and try out several fountain pens. (A good shop will always let you do that!) Everyone prefers different things in fountain pens (or pens in general!), so it's difficult to give a all size fits all rec. (Some want skinny pens, some want thicker pens, some like them light, some like them heavy, a lot of people hold their pens differently...) Definitely try to at least hold them in your hand to see whether you find them comfortable to hold! (Because yes, for example the Lamy Safari/All Star, which is one of the classic school pens, is NOT comfortable for quite some people.)
This video should come with a warning! I never felt lik a fountain pen person (I suspect at school I just has some I didn't get the hang of (SImple Pelikan one)). But hearing you talk about each of them, no matter how expensive or affordable got me wondering if I only had the wrong ones! So I went and bought what was on stock here at a local shop. A Lamy Nexx with Medium nib. And I loved it! I also got the Lamy Studio in extra fine (which isn't all that fine) by now and love it to bits! It won't be the last one I got I am afraid... Loving it! I think my handwriting looks way nicer with fountain pens and since I recently got into postcrossing that comes in handy... should only get waterproof ink... to prevent the postcards arriving empty/ washed clean by the rain... Love your channel and your enthusiasm!
Maybe you could do a video on how to take care of your dried up pens with the one that was a bit dirty? And then show us what to do to prevent the pens to dry up? Lots of love Maja
I have only one of these pens, a TWSBI Eco with a 1.1 nib. I don't like the look of it but it writes fine. My favourite pen is my Jinhao X750 Shimmering Sands with a Jowo 1.1 nib. I have a preference for metal pens. Isn't it funny how people like different things. I hate demonstrators but realise a lot of people like them.
This might be a silly question but if you use cartridges do you still have to clean the nib where the ink flows out? If so, how do you do it without the squeeze/ball tool?
i dont know if you already got your answer. but pens with cartridges can clogg up too... so i usually clean the nib whenever i feel like the ink doesn't flow as well as usual... or you can quickly clean the nib before you change the cartridge (you definetly should clean it if you put a differently coloured cartridge). To do so just unscrew the body and the nib part, take out the empty cartridge and put the nib part in some water. if you don't have a squeez tool, i sometimes use the sink and turn on the water just a tiny bit, so that it flows through the pen... I am not a professional... this is just what i do and what works for me...
Question: how many do you keep inked at once? Is it better to store them empty? I have a few and I like to have options with ink so they all have a different ink. But then I get busy, don't use them and they dry out. What is your strategy?
Awesome collection I am so happy you shared! I love your writing and you should have nice pens with which to create. You have excellent taste too! I would be happy to have any of these pens. I have a nice collection of pens with the Lamy Al--Star being the one I paid the most. I am happy for now with those that don't cost me much money so I can invest in lots of colors of inks. If I decide to pay a bit more for a pen I would have trouble deciding which one or more to invest in. For now I won't worry about that. I am looking forward to seeing lots of your videos in 2018! I do hope I can Bullet Journal with pages that look a bit nicer like yours. You do it so free hand and I am just not that talented. Maybe I can practice and my pages will look like something I will enjoy reviewing in years to come. God Bless you and yours this year!
I have one fountain pen that i bought myself for christmas! A Turquoise TWSBI Eco in Fine (I adore it)! I don’t intend to buy any more as i don’t have any need for more.... but inks are a different story...
Kara, love your FP collection!! My favorite is the Pilot Vanishing Point and the Twisbi!! Thanks for sharing!! Can’t wait to see what you collect next!!❤️💛💚💙🖤💖💜
Thanks for sharing this Kara! When you do the pen cleaning video, would you please show how you keep your clear Noodler's Ahab so clean? Mine has discolored from using the J. Herbin Caroube de Chypre ink in it and I can't seem to get rid of the discoloration.
... wow In Germany its mandatory to learn to write cursive, so every kid has tons of fountain pens... But wooooowww... I didnt know that it was such a big deal... (Btw from second until tenth grade youre only allowed to write with a royal blue inked fountain pen for any exams or test...)
I have a question about writing with fountain pens, can you write with normal handwriting or just calligraphy, basically how it's best to write with a fountain pen?
Fountain pens are multi-purpose: printing, handwriting, calligraphy, italics, art work, doodling. All are delightful. Fountain pens were in common use for 100 years before the introduction of the ballpoint. Enjoy !
I just wan't to say that you turned me on both fountain pens and bullet journaling. I started at the time when you just have goten your first one and I have not looked back. I only have 2 fountain pens but I use both of them every day. I also have bunch of inks that I love to change up. Funily enough I don't have any black ink.
Do you find it difficult to adjust to the clip being on the nib side in your vanishing point fountain pens? I have held off ordering (no local store to try one) because I cannot imagine holding the clip end of a fountain pen.
I am not sure, but the first turquoise pens you showed are probably Gold Plated, which is not the same as an 18 K Gold Nib. Diamond 580s are also NOT GOLD NIBS, they are gold colored. In general, you cannot purchase a good fountain pen with a 14K or 18K (or, with Sailor pens and a few others, a 21K nib) GOLD NIB for less than $140. As an exception, you can find a Platinum 3772 on EBAY for around $80 (one that costs almost twice as much from a USA retailer). However, I enjoy steel nibs almost as much as gold nibs. I like a lot of the pens you have, and you did probably get a gold nib with the Vanishing Point.
Oh! I'm gonna absolutely love this series ! I do have a question also. I have lots of fountain pens. But, I am looking for one with a little drag. Any suggestions? I mean a pen that has less flow. More on the slightly dry side . I hope you know what I'm trying to say. Lol
Thank you so much for this video, I went out yesterday and bought my very first Fountain Pen, a Lamy and I love it!! My question to you is which brand would you recommend for the best extra fine nib? Can't wait for more fountain pen videos.
Love Love Love this video! It makes me want to go out and buy ALL the pens! I have a question! I have 6 pens in my collection so far. I always heard you reference Noodler’s ink so I bought Black and Apache Sunset. I found that none of my pens right well at all with the Noodler’s ink but they work perfectly with my Pilot inks...any idea why??
I love the look of the Vanishing Point (Capless in the UK) but would have to save up for a LONG time to afford one! Are they really worth saving up for?
Would love to see an update of your collection (not asking for a video, I know you are taking it a bit slow and are about to go on your retreat but a photo on Instagram would be awesome!)
Hi Kara - Thank you for the fun video. When you showed your DC haul there was also something that looked like a glass dragon/peacock (I don't remember). It was so gorgeous. Will you talk about that in these videos too?
I am so envious of your collection. Haha What would you say is a good fountain pen for a fountain pen virgin? I was looking at buying a Lamy Safari because I absolutely love the way it looks or even a Twisbi (dunno if I spelled that right). But I'm really not sure if that's the best way to go. Can you please help me??
Lovely collection! On the Vanishing Point ones, though, does the clip not get in the way when you're writing? I noticed it was on the end with the nib, and it seems like it'd be getting in the way when you write with it.
but unlike you, I don’t like repeating purchase on a model. so apart from a set of Lamy Joy art pens (flat nib) in all sizes, all my other fountain pens are different.
who else convinced yourself to buy a metropolitan because it’s said to be “more economical” down the road and ended up spending thousands in fountain pens
You may have mentioned it, but of course, we need to see your ink collection as well!
You have a lovely collection, Kara, thank you for sharing it (virtually) with us.
I inhereted my first fountain pen from my dad he got it as a graduatian present from his grandparents. It's 50ish years old now and it still writes like new I love it.
Thats why fountain pens are the best
This was such a pleasure, to have a guided tour of your fountain pen collection! Thank you!
My mum bought me my first ever Goulet pen for Christmas, I think it was called Monteverde and a load of ink samples and I'm so happy it's so beautiful and smooth and I am in love
Monteverde is the brand, but it's sure an amazing one!
Lucky!
Gorgeous collection, thank you for sharing and I'm really looking forward to seeing the rest of this series. 👏👏

Wow, I will have to watch this again (and again!), to make detailed notes in my bujo about fountain pens! And draw a few pictures, too!
Audrey Hoover - I’m in the same boat. It was all over when I watched Kara’s Metro v Al Star video. 😊
She got me too!!😂 I’m 10 fountain pens in!

I just finished watching your BuJo video from 2015. I am so excited that you are still building your fountain pen collection!
I love seeing collections of any kind and this one is so nice. The colors of the Pelican are beautiful. I like the same colors you do it seems.
Your pen collection is beautiful!! Thanks for posting this video. I learned so much!
Oh my goodness, fountain pen envy! All of your pens are so gorgeous. I'm so very excited about the fountain pen series!!! Hooray! Thank You Kara!! 🖋

Love to see how each pen writes. You have a beautiful collection.
I love thisssss 💎 I've always had an interest in fountain pens
And learning it from you is even better
Thank you
I'm excited for the upcoming videos
Very nice collection. 🖋
Wow, amazing collection of Fountain pens. I'd love to see the brush pen in action... 😍
I love my pilot vanishing point! I would love to have the Visconti but opted for the pilot falcon. I want you to know that I miss you on TH-cam!
I'm drooling over your awesome collection
loved seeing your collection and their stories
Kara! My husband bought me a quill pen for our anniversary!!!! It is copper and gorgeous and you would love it! 😍 Now I get to learn to use it. 😂
Quill pens are fun.
Very nice collection.
My face when I saw the Pelikan: 😍😍😍
My face when I saw how much it costs: 😵😵😵
Maybe in another life 😅
I would love for you to continue this fountain pen series.
that is an amazing collection and I totally get why you got hooked! Thank you so much for sharing your collection. New subbie looking forward to seeing the rest
I am excited to dive into your series! This video made me really want a fountain pen :)
you have a very nice collection.
Beautiful collection!!
Lovely review - what an amazing collection! 😀
Wow Kara what a pen collection!
My dreampen is the Montegrappa copper also and the love for it increased 1000 times now 😂🙏🏻
Thank you for a lovely video. ❤️
Xo xo
Nice collection, especially in pastel bluish colors you apparently prefer.
Owning a visconti is my dream.
I really wanted to get the Visconti millennium arc moonlight but when I got into fountain pens it was already discontinued. Visconti is such an innovative, beautiful brand with great pens. Im thinking of buying one of their northern lights (very exclusive as well!)
I just started with fountain pens and i started with the Pilot Retro Fine (turquoise) and love it
It's obvious the colour is the important thing.
Try a Jinhao 15 in midnight blue.
It has a waistline look
They have hooded fine nibs. It could broaden out your collection to have a Chinese pen.
It’s a must do in school to learn how to write with a fountain pen in first grade in Germany I miss to write with those. Which one would you recommend to get when starting out? ❤️
svenjawhateverr brian from gouletpens has a very informative video on the topic of fountainpens for beginners/ newbies. Maybe this helps.
TWSBI diamond 580 al was my first. But the platinum preppy is only like $3 and writes very nice.
I do work in a stationery shop in Germany and what I would recommend is, that you go to a shop and try out several fountain pens. (A good shop will always let you do that!) What a lovely video Kara!
I only have a Waterman Expert fountain pen, but it's the nicest fountain pen I ever had!!!!
The rainbow Stipula is my fav.
This is the first of yours I am seeing and I like ot alooot
May god bless you
Maybe you could do a video on how to take care of your dried up pens with the one that was a bit dirty? And then show us what to do to prevent the pens to dry up?
Lots of love
Maja
I have only one of these pens, a TWSBI Eco with a 1.1 nib.
I don't like the look of it but it writes fine.
My favourite pen is my Jinhao X750 Shimmering Sands with a Jowo 1.1 nib.
I have a preference for metal pens.
Isn't it funny how people like different things.
I hate demonstrators but realise a lot of people like them.
Fantastic pen collection! Go for Aurora pens next
Would you recommend any fountain pens under £10 for beginners and also affordable hand writing books and sheets?
Herbin Caroube de Chypre ink in it and I can't seem to get rid of the discoloration.
... wow
In Germany its mandatory to learn to write cursive, so every kid has tons of fountain pens... But wooooowww... I didnt know that it was such a big deal...
(Btw from second until tenth grade youre only allowed to write with a royal blue inked fountain pen for any exams or test...)
Seeing your Trello makes me have a better idea how to use that app. Thanks!
My Twsbi eco is on its way. And my first pen was also Pilot Metropolitan. I wish to have a collection of my own very soon
How about your pens and tombow Collection? I'm really interested in what your favorite pens are 😍
I have a question about writing with fountain pens, can you write with normal handwriting or just calligraphy, basically how it's best to write with a fountain pen?
Fountain pens are multi-purpose: printing, handwriting, calligraphy, italics, art work, doodling. All are delightful. Fountain pens were in common use for 100 years before the introduction of the ballpoint. Enjoy !
Thank you so much =)
What is the program you used to catalog all the fountain pen questions? I love all the colors and the organization! ("Fountain Pen Video Series")
You will be excited when the Pelikan M600 Turquoise White Special edition comes out in March
YES! I can't WAIT
Can you do an updated fountain pen collection video if it has changed?
I am currently saving for a lamp safari pen :D
I just wan't to say that you turned me on both fountain pens and bullet journaling. I started at the time when you just have goten your first one and I have not looked back. Do you find it difficult to adjust to the clip being on the nib side in your vanishing point fountain pens? I have held off ordering (no local store to try one) because I cannot imagine holding the clip end of a fountain pen.
Hilma Sinkinson I was bugged by the clip but many people don’t mind.
Stick to affordable pens at the beginning. The Pilot Metropolitan has a good fine nib that is well made, but not at all expensive.
Are they really worth saving up for?
what is the slim turquoise pen upper right corner?
I would love to see how the brush pen works once you have inked it up.
Allow me to fangirl for a moment here - I SAW MY COMMENT ON KARA'S TASK BOARD!! *squee* Okay, I'm done. Yay, fountain pens!
Nicki Ivey cringe
Would love to see an update of your collection (not asking for a video, I know you are taking it a bit slow and are about to go on your retreat but a photo on Instagram would be awesome!)
Yaay! I was waiting for this.
Hi Kara - Thank you for the fun video. When you showed your DC haul there was also something that looked like a glass dragon/peacock (I don't remember). It was so gorgeous. Will you talk about that in these videos too?
I am so envious of your collection. Haha
What would you say is a good fountain pen for a fountain pen virgin? I was looking at buying a Lamy Safari because I absolutely love the way it looks or even a Twisbi (dunno if I spelled that right). But I'm really not sure if that's the best way to go. Can you please help me??
Will you be doing an Ink Collection video? I’d love to see them!
Lovely collection! On the Vanishing Point ones, though, does the clip not get in the way when you're writing? I noticed it was on the end with the nib, and it seems like it'd be getting in the way when you write with it.
Hmm I think you might like teal a bit, Kara :P
😍😍😍
Ma'am just wondering. Why didn't you include Parker, Cross or Sheaffer in your collection. Thank you.
I drooled for the whole duration of the video... where did you get that case from?!
Do you have Pierre Cardin fountain pens?
What software is that on the beginning with the questions?
I want to get a TWSBI classic
I already have an ECO and a Safari
but unlike you, I don’t like repeating purchase on a model. so apart from a set of Lamy Joy art pens (flat nib) in all sizes, all my other fountain pens are different.
